I was expecting the new Human Serpent to be a masterpiece and it still obliterated my expectations.

I thought someone here might enjoy this inventive sludge metal with Mike Patton-esque vocals.

Misotheist released a great new album. https://terraturpossessions.bandcamp.co ... r-redeemer

Also, wouldn't it be better to have different threads for the worthwhile releases of the year? I don't think 20 threads is going to work but I don't know, I guess a black+death thread, another one for heavy+power+thrash and another one for doom+sludge+postmetal could work. I'm sure a lot of people don't care about most of the extreme metal I post.

You're one of the few folks I look forward to hear what he's discovered and I think it's a good idea. Personally I don't care about power, thrash or sludge and I'm sure lots of people simply disregard genres they don't like. I think it could work if people don't start with ridiculous sub-sub-divisions. Something akin to the genre specific help thread in the recommendations section would be great, I think.

What about those who want to check stuff from several genres? They then have to browse several threads. Also unless they're stickied I'm guessing that it won't be long before they go out of page 1 and into oblivion. Seems unnecessary to me.

I think it's way easier to go and browse the doom metal thread when you're feeling doomier then go through pages and pages of a massive thread that's just mix of everything. Tomorrow you wake-up feeling like some classic heavy metal, you go straight to that thread. Easy.

Yeah, all I'm saying is that I tend to ignore most of what is posted here. I don't even read other posts if I have to be completely honest, just come here to post something, use the search function to check it has already been mentioned before and then completely forget about the hundreds of messages with genres I don't care. I don't think it's really useful as it is. I'm not saying we separate it into 10 threads but a 3-4 threads system could work. The amount of work someone has to put to check them all is far smaller than the effort of reading through a lot of albums from genres you're not interested.

Just a though. We can of course keep the actual system and I can keep not reading other people's posts. It's not the end of the world for me, just a suggestion on how to improve the forum. Being able to save time not reading other stuff could actually lead to people posting more in the threads they're interested in.

I get your point and it's a valid idea. I was just pointing out another possible outcome of that being implemented. ;)

I wish I'd have something to recommend here but I haven't heard anything worthwhile that came out this year, yet.

Good news, everyone! The new DSKNT album is already streaming in full. Black/death for fans of Svartidaudi, etc.

It's great. Less melodic, more Deathspell Omega/Icelandic sounding. It's a shame it's so short but all killer no filler.

I've been really digging the new Dalit (doom/death), Crowned In Sorrow (symphonic doom/death), Apostisy (melo-death), and Reflection Of Glory (symphonic/power). This year's been off to a strong start for metal.

Got this rec from Afsky, which was one of my favs of last year and it sounds amazing. The only album I've heard this year that would stand a chance to contend for a top 10 spot in my 2020 list.

New Ad Nauseam is awesome. A lot of that Deathspell Omega style with jangly dissonant riffing and horror atmosphere.

So far only digital download, but they're trying to get out a CD release as well.

Maybe I'm just cheap, but $15 US for a digital release of a band nobody has heard of seems steep - that's basically $20 CAD. I was interested in this because Mindmaze was hyping it up, but I'll just avoid checking it out.

Good news, Spiner! Ominous Glory have heard people's pleas (not only their fans, but even their own band members!) and have dropped the price of the digital download to $10.00. Anyone who paid the full $15.00 will be credited $5.00 off for the CD.

Hello Everyone,
I continue to be humbled by how well our album has been performing over the course of the past 5 weeks, both on streaming sites and with album sales on Bandcamp. It is the very subject of the latter that will be the subject of tonight's post. Having spoken with other members of the band and also after getting some reactions from the metal community, I've come to the determination that the price set for the digital purchase of the album on Bandcamp is a tad high. Part of the reason why we set the price where we did was to match the default pricing that the album received on iTunes and Amazon music, but upon further review I've noticed that the total album purchase price on those sites is $10, though purchasing individual songs runs for $1.
As such we are reducing the digital download on Bandcamp to $10. As we've had a couple dozen people already purchase the album at the higher price, I am going to keep a list of everyone who did so and will be offering a $5 discount on the physical CD when it comes out. I can't thank all of you enough for the massive support that you've shown us already and I want to do my due diligence to make sure that everyone is treated fairly. One silver-lining on this is that the money that you've already sent us will all go towards the CDs that will be released and failing some unforeseen issues, we now have the needed resources to get the CDs released at some point next month. I will be putting out further details shortly, thank you again everyone!

Ha, got that message this morning after purchasing the digital on Friday. Kinda wish I'd held off a bit now, LOL.

It's a damn fine album though. Scratches that Rhapsody itch quite well, with a dash of DragonForce thrown in for flavour. It's a beast at 80 minutes, and like most albums of that length, I find it kinda blurs together after a while, but I still enjoy it quite a bit.

I'm a sucker for this kind of music but an 80 minute debut is completely absurd. I'd much rather pay attention to bands like Fellowship who build hype with a very small initial offering, which makes way more sense from both a new fan and band growth perspective. I just don't have the bandwidth or attention span to listen to something so long anymore, unless it's from a long-running favorite artist who are putting out a magnum opus at the pinnacle of their career.

This first Ominous Glory song sounds way better than anything Rhapsody did to me. Not sure I need an 80 minute album of this but it sounds fun and the singer is cool.

edit: Yeah this is cool as fuck actually; actual riffs and songs and not a bunch of awful neoclassical wanking like some bands could turn into. Very solid.

I liked Pan-Amerikan Native Front's first album more, but "Little Turtle's War" is a very enjoyable follow-up nonetheless. He's doing some different stuff on this one, so perhaps it will still grow a bit. Definitely worth checking out if you've enjoyed the previous material.

For fans of Alice in Chains, I highly recommend Appalooza. The singer can sound like Layne Staley and nails those Alice in Chains-style harmonies, but can also be more gruff. The music sounds like a mix between Baroness, High on Fire, and, of course, Alice in Chains.

They're not listed in MA, but they're close enough to metal that I think they're suitable for this thread.

If you're interested in just a single song, I would recommend Nazareth or Azazael.

https://appalooza.bandcamp.com/album/the-holy-of-holies

Early album of the year candidate for me.

Humanity’s Last Breath - Välde

Yes. This is a*-core-band. But this is some next level stuff. It could even be the final form of “something”-core.
With that said I think that this is one of the more interesting releases so far this year.
It’s just a monolith of toxic sound pouring into my ears.
If you’re not discouraged by the genre labeling and in the mood for something extremely bleak and heavy, check it out!

I have to agree. I went into this album with no expectations and it's decent. Sounds like a mix of Meshuggah, Mick Gordon's Doom Soundtrack, tech death and some Ulcerate soundscapes here and there.

Omination from Tunisia have put out the most dramatic and toweringly bleak funeral doom record, perhaps ever. It's called New Golgotha Repvblic and they call their style Apocalyptic funeral doom. I should get to writing a review for this - I was that moved.

It's been a slow start to the year but releases are finally picking up for my tastes.

Malice Divine - s/t

Incredibly tight and precise Melodic Black/Death Metal. I had a hard time believing this is a one man project since the songs are diverse and stand alone. Love the melodies, riffing, tempo changes, and song writing. One of the best parts though, is the solos. Although they can be quite technical at times, the solos always flow out organically and tie the songs together.

Kanonenfieber - Menschenmühle

WW1 themed Black/Death Metal. There will be comparisons to 1914, Bolt Thrower, and other war themed bands. Those comparisons are warranted. If this album gets noticed it will be a top 10 album for many.

I discovered these guys when they released the split with Abyssal in 2018 and have been waiting since then for their next release.

It was well worth the wait. Brutal and caothic Black/Death, my 1st true AOTY contender for 2021.
