Japan arguably has the most notable hard rock/metal scene outside of the western world, and there is something special about Japanese popular music as a whole (I especially like Eurobeat that is commonly associated with anime). I will mostly focus on metal music in anime. One notable example of such includes the Death Note intros/outros played by Nightmare and Maximum the Hormone. None of them are probably classified as "metal archives" metal, but they are still good.

Another example is the Japanese Pokemon XYZ theme:

I don't know if that counts as metal, but Attack on Titans had some pretty lit openings. I'm not gonna post them out of fear of spoilers, but I will instead show an Epica cover:

Not technically anime since it's a live-action version, but the outro of the Netflix Erased is nice:

So what are your thoughts? What are some other examples of metal intros/outros/osts/soundtracks could you think of in anime, and what subgenre would it classify? Please avoid spoilers of any kind out of courtesy. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure Galneryus did an ending for Hunter x Hunter right?

I'm gonna state the somewhat obvious one with Detroit Metal City. There's even an MA entry for the live action rendition that happened once.

Never seen Fairy Tail, but the soundtrack makes me want to try whenever I hear it.

Treads in the realm of metalcore, but I figure WataMote's OP is close enough:

Hajime no Ippo's 3rd ending theme is by heavy/power metal band Saber Tiger:

The same show's 2nd OP is a pretty badass hard rock/heavy metal track:

The guitarist of the last track also did the opening for Trigun, and it rocks pretty hard:

One Punch Man famously has a fuckin' kickass hard rock opening theme:

One of my kid students wanted to learn the opening to the anime Parasyte, which has a song from a Japanese band Fear, And Loathing In Las Vegas (yeah literally like the movie). The autotune on the singing vocals makes me cringe, but it's got some catchy riffing and I was laughing with it for how over the top it is.

The kid tried some sections I gave him - he got some of it but it's challenging. We'll make that a longer term goal.

When I first heard that song I also despised the overuse of autotune. However, later on, I got the hang of it. Parasyte in general was a pretty good anime.
Edit: I just realize that the song was in English in most parts

Loudness played the title song for Odin Photon Space Sailer Starlight all the way back in 1985:

This is my favourite Loudness song, its atmosphere is absolutely incredible in my opinion.

Not exactly anime (although they very much have an anime art style and they have had anime OVAs based on them), but the japanese game developer Nihon Falcom has an inhouse band called Falcom Sound Team jdk, which has done some amazing neoclassical metal pieces to their games over the years. Like actual instrumental metal with a full band and not just orchestral arrangements that have taken influence from metal. They also do a lot of alternative arrangements of the songs, like making them more of full songs with vocals etc. And they gig as well.

Spoiler: show

They do often have a fully animated OP for the game as well, and in some of their series it's traditionally been a metal song.

Okay, I am not really that into anime, but a friend of mine in high school was, so I did see some. There is always Bastard!! which I haven't seen in many years, so I am going off of old memories here. It doesn't have actually metal that I remember (it may, but I honestly don't remember at this point), but it has tons of metal/hard rock references. I believe some versions sort of remove some of them with weird subtitle translations, but there were references to Slayer, Helloween, Metallica, etc. One of the main characters is Dark Schneider (a clear reference to Udo Dirkschneider of Accept) and there is Di-Amon, who was based on King Diamond. All of this made it something of interest enough to me to watch and I enjoyed it. I remember a friend of mine picked up on DVD and was pissed that the subtitles changed some of the spellings of names and basically eliminated many of the references.

ctrl + f "Black Heaven"

ctrl + f "Aggretsuko"

...Disappointed!

Performed by John Sykes (Thin Lizzy, Tygers of Pan Tang and Whitesnake).

The anime itself was about... let me try to remember. Some washed up metal rocker-tuned-salaryman who suddenly finds his music back thanks to... aliens, I think? It's been 20 years and the anime kind of sucked and I only saw a few episodes but yeah

And of course Aggretsuko (apologies for the dubbed version :P)

Oh fuck, Black Heaven. Didn't he also have to get drunk to play or something? And his riffs powered space weapons.

I got to know Onmyoza thanks to Basilisk's opening (for which I'll be forever grateful)

Yup, HxH had a couple of solid tunes on the heavy side. I don't know what style I would call Just Awake, but there's got to be a little In Flames influence going on there.

How could I forget.... Cowboy Bebop's Heavy Metal Queen?

The full song, performed by Seatbelts (Yoko Kanno, the main composer's, actual band)

On U.S. TV, the first Naruto opening theme has some pretty cool metal guitar. Apparently in Japan they never used this opening.

I believe it was Manga U.K. that decided this was an appropriate marketing angle.
