I listen to a lot of depressing sounding bands, so I have quite a few choices. These would have to be the ones that I think make the biggest impression on me, as far as being the saddest.

Abandon - The Dead End (disturbingly bleak funeral sludge doom, vocalist died prior to release)

Atriarch - Forever the End (hella apocalyptic deathrocky sludge, desperate sounding screams and utterly haunting riffs)

Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights (Neurosisy post-sludge with ice cold sounding riffs, manic sounding vocals, hella personal lyrics)

Bosque - Passage (raw, lo-fi, scary droney funeral doom that sounds hella desolate and ghostly)

Funeral - Tragedies (powerfully mournful funeral doom with beautiful, gut wrenching sad clean soprano vocals)

Funeral - From These Wounds (straight up clinically depressed, stuck-in-a-psych-ward goth doom with despondent deep clean vocals)

Hangman's Chair - Banlieue triste (^^ same, but less psych-ward and more sleeping-in-a-filthy-subway-station-bathroom depressive)

Katatonia - Discouraged Ones (PROBABLY the saddest goth metal album ever made)

Loss - Despond (it's like if a band decided to take on the whole DSBM aesthetic but instead made really melodic sounding funeral doom)

Mourner - Still (^^ same but less depression and more just straight up disturbing)

Oathbreaker - Rheia (probably one of the most deeply personal albums I've heard. Post-black stuff with some of the most pained vocals and lyrics about genuinely traumatic memories)

Rostau - To Die and to the Stars Ascend (straight up apocalyptic droney funeral doom stuff that is less so "sad" and moreso disturbingly cold)

The Slow Death - Ark (apocalyptic funeral doom with a lot of hella emotional guitar leads and tragically pretty clean vocals)

Warning - Watching From a Distance (no explanation needed)

Worship - The Last Tape Before Doomsday (#1 most depressing, suicidal, disturbing, "dude are you okay? I'm worried about you" funeral doom ever written)

Notice that most of the bands mentioned on this thread play really slow?

Well, yeah; it's kind of hard to sound sad when you're thrashing the fuck out, you know?

There are exceptions. Atmo-Black metal bands for example like Agalloch or Panopticon, those are personal opinions though.

One I haven't seen posted here yet is Judicator's At the Expense of Humanity which is a concept album of Yelland's brother passing away from cancer. It's different than the two albums that follow, but it's one of my favorites. Some of the songs hit so hard lyrically.

Don't know about THE saddest, but they're all there to me.

Fall of the Leafe was an AMAZING and very underrated band. I love all their albums.

I do think August Wernicke has a mournful sound to it but I'm not sure anything about it makes it stand out as one of the saddest albums EVER. Of course, i don't know any of the lyrics and maybe you do, so perhaps they could be sad.

Do you know the lyrics to the album and if so, what are they about?

I was disappointed that the singer left to form The Man Eating Tree which is really not a very good band.

And on a different but related note, their singer does the best Maynard imitation I've ever heard in my life, though honestly over all , despite the styles of the bands being entirely different aside from singing style, I think Fall of the Leafe is a better band than Tool.

Sorry, this comes late. I don't really know what the hell their lyrics are about. There are only some small fragments written in the booklet. They're about some man and his inner thoughts, that much I know. There might still be some old interviews floating around that illuminate this. Always had an impression that their singer was a strange man. A modern poet of some kind.

Funeral "Tragedies" or Katatonia "Brave Murder Day"
But rather the former
Just listen to it

Any from Daylight Dies, but especially No Reply and Dismantling Devotion.

Excerpt from Unending Waves:

I have memories
Clouded by sorrow
Of a time in life
When blood ran though my veins

But these walls keep closing
Suffocating
And now I'm trapped beneath
The weight of my own loss

Excerpt from A Life Less Lived:

White stained read
of vacant eyes
The hollow dreams
of a barren life
Saline soultions
yield no resolutions

Sleepwalk through
this pain induced
coma of wakefulness
My lungs draw air
but in this body
there is no life

Songs From The North, and Hope, by Swallow the Sun

Excerpt from Empire of Loneliness:

Then from the dark a small
glimmering light did appear,
with the trembling wings of a butterfly
it shone a light into my night.

A halo of a childish hope
reaching from somewhere
long since gone...

I held my breath
and it landed on
my arm and asked:

"Is there still anything worth reaching for?"
And my heart said no.
"Any light or goodness in you worth holding on to?"
And my heart said no.

I closed my eyes, got on my weak knees,
and breathed in the dark glow.
As her wings turned to ashes,
from ashes to a black moth.

I heard the sirens
and screaming of the iron.
And my heart still said no.

Arcane Rain Fell, by Draconian

Excerpt from Death, Come Near Me:

Oh, shed a tear for the loss, of innocence,
for the forsaken spirits who aches... in us.
Cry for the heart who surrenders to pain,
for the solitude of those, left, behind!

Behold the pain and sorrow of the world,
dream of a place away from this nightmare.
Give us love and unity, under the heart of night.
O Death, come near us, and give us life!

Damp Chill of Life, by None

Excerpt from You Did a Good Thing

I didn't want to, but he wanted me to, he made me do it! He made me do it! So I-I- cut his wrist but he didn't-! I-I-I- so I cut his throat but he kept screaming! I thought I would take off his head and I kept stabbing and he didn't die! He didn't die! And I didn't know what to do! I kept trying and trying to stop his heart but it wouldn't stop! It wouldn't stop and it was so horrible! I didn't know- it was so horrible!

Anything from Shining, but especially The Eerie Cold and Halmstad

Excerpt from Claws of Perdition:

A suicidal haze, unreal like a torturous dream
Old stinging mental wounds, still raw and fucking bleeding
Drowning in the womb of misery, the mother of depression
The slaughter of all hope, the grim death of compassion
Sell your soul to evil, sell your soul to death
... suicide, suicide, suicide, suicide, suicide, suicide, suicide...
A dead empty stare into the ruins of my world
A world I have already left, so many years ago

Hereafter, by Hands of Despair

Excerpt from The Departure

Walking through the clouds
I heard your voice
echo of a forgotten hope
days go by
but doubt remains
am I able to go on?

Aphotic, by Novembers Doom

Excerpt from What Could Have Been

There's no easy way to see it disappear
Always dreaming of what could have been
Who will be there to hold you
As the morning light breaks
We long to be there for you
And we can only hope you knew

The Gathering Wilderness, by Primordial

Excerpt from Cities Carved in Stone

Sometimes I get to thinking of the past
When I've had more than a drink or two
Who knows where the days go
And would you ever want them back

Judgement - Anathema

Because of One last goodbye. As a frenchie, l have to mention Alcest... It's sad in good way, not depressive.
I think Amesoeurs and Asphodèle are really too. Audrey Sylvain's voice is girly, naïve and has this sad mood.
