The new Atomwinter is worth a spin.

There's nothing original here. It sounds very reminiscent of Bloodbath circa Resurrection Through Carnage, so it's basically a facsimile of a facsimile, but it's executed flawlessly. This is punchy, catchy OSDM that never overstays its welcome. The opener 'Ov Blood and Flesh' is particularly enjoyable.

Was listening to the new Tithe album and once it ended, the new Carnosus album came out. Never heard of them until that point but immediately listened to the whole thing twice. Fun and fast tech death/thrash reminiscent of Revocation.

Just listened to this album from Spectral Damnation and found it quite enjoyable. Black/death that's closer to blackened death metal that's well executed.

Actually loving the new Fredlös album. Featuring Entombed members. Folk metal in the vein of Storm with dashes of early Siebenburgen (Loreia era) and Darkwell.

I'm currently on my first listen to the new Omega Infinity, and while it's sure to take numerous spins to fully appreciate it, it sounds like a worthy follow up to the Solar Spectre. Same cold, distant sounding avant-garde-ish black metal as on the debut that succeeds in creating the vast and desolate feel of the space.

New Azaghal fucking rips, as expected. Intense and furious Finnish BM but with lots of interesting little details to unpack with successive listens. Not a dull moment on this one!

That new Azaghal is excellent! Best thing they've done in quite some time now.

My expectations were unreasonably high, and yet, I absolutely love the new Air Raid album, "Fatal Encounter"! I think I like it less than 2017's "Across the Line" (but that's INCREDIBLLY tough competition in my personal opinion), but it is still easily my AotY at this point in 2023.

This new Necrovation EP Storm the Void / Starving Grave is pretty good. Very different material from what they were previously doing while still being death metal. It's only two songs but made me look forward to them hopefully releasing a new album.

It's hard to find a black metal band that has been as equally consistent as awesome for such a long time. It sounds like one of their most aggressive and heavy albums.

Another vote for the greatness of the new Azaghal. So far I've only found 3 albums enjoyable enough to purchase this year, and this is one of 'em (and probably the best, but way too early to think about rankings...).

I'm listening to this EP from a hitherto unknown Japanese black metal band called Vandal and I have to say this is some really well written and produced black metal. For a new band these guys sound like they've already been doing this for years.

First album I can say is a definite relisten from this year, I would describe it as jumpy black metal whether that's true or not

The Full of Hell and Primitive Man collab album sounds like music you listen to while stapling squirrels - like I thought it would - and I'm all for it.

It's a reference to an indie horror/hunting game by David Szymanski called Squirrel Stapler. Just a weird and stupid trip of a game. The maker's more famous for other games like Dusk, Chop Goblins, and Iron Lung.

I mean of the most deserving of stapling, I would say humans are probably top of that list.

Not the strongest of starts this year, but I really enjoy Megaton Sword "Might & Power". Could be their best one yet. I liked the vocals on the first two as well, but they have improved quite a bit on this one. The only minus is the (still) weak guitar solos.
And despite the title - "Babe Eternal" is one hell of a song!

More killer one-man DIY speed metal by Jo Steele: Ice War 'Bloodsucker' (EP).
Not only is this guy very prolific with new releases every year, the quality keeps improving in leaps and bounds, both performance and production-wise. I love this guy.
I just wish he'd get a real drummer like he has with Devil Cross, I fucking hate drum machines...

Stumbled across this demo by Canadian band Pestis on Bandcamp Friday. Filthy, crusty death metal. If anyone remembers Trenchgrinder it reminds me a lot of them: https://pestis.bandcamp.com/album/demo-i-2023

As I expected that new Enslaved album is absolutely great. Lots of that 70s prog influence with their trademark black/viking metal sound. Also as previously mentioned that new Hellripper is an absolute banger

New Baazlvaat came out today. Haven't heard enough to compare it to previous releases, but it's weird and fascinating and I'm sure I'll be listening to this quite a bit.

Some nice Melodic Death Metal was recently released besides Insomnium. Below both have Amon Amrth/battle type vibes.

Icestorm - The Northern Crusades

Idolatrous – Sorrow On Midgard

I also like the new Sarcoptes - Prayers to Oblivion

Also for some over the top power metal, I got a kick out of Ascension - Under The Veil of Madness, some parts felt like they were trying to 1 up Dragonforce

Agreed. Sadly we are now five years on since the last Visigoth album, but Megaton Sword make up for that quite nicely!

It doesn't come out for another week, but I received my copy of Kruelty's "Untopia" a couple of days ago, and am absolutely loving it. If you like the two available tracks, you will absolutely love the rest.

New Slog album is pretty interesting. Claustrophobic doom/death metal that reminds me somewhat of Spectral Voice and to a certain degree Cianide.

Black/thrash from Chile. That's all that needs saying at this point really, no one does it like these guys. Amazing local scene that has developed over there!
