The new vengeful spectre is out, incredible musicianship… incorporating different stylistic shifts but the core is the same. Fantastic.

Serpent of Old's debut is pretty good. No nonsense black/death.

Listening to the album again since the month of its release. It still holds up pretty well; really great material and sinister atmosphere!

June was a quiet time for me due to being busy as hell so not much listening, only really came across three things I'd give the nod to.

Impetuous Ritual - Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis: I really like this one. It's IR doing IR stuff, but they got a lot more Portal leaking through with all the squiggly scratchy riffs and they use a bunch of palm muted BDM chugging to give their wall of noise some real energy and extremity.

Runemagick - Beyond the Cenotaph of Mankind: A solid return to form for them, has a lot of candlemass-y type scale and bounce to the otherwise very grim and severe death/doom core, it's pretty darn good.

Passéisme - Alternance: Just sneaking in because it IS good, but it's a much more mature, versatile album than the first one and that first one was so maniacally manic and excessive that it made me sweaty. It is a fairly big disappointment compared to that. Still, despite all the slower parts and sticking to parts long enough that they don't need to cram melodies into gaps they don't fit in by playing them three times faster than makes sense, it still is a wildly intense and techy take on the fancy french noble BM sound which I like more than all the others.

Seconding this, it's on my contender list, and I like your "fancy French noble BM" description - I've always called this sub-genre "chaotic folk BM". Their first album put me off with the shouted vocals so I never revisited, but this one it didn't bother me so I should return.

They definitely toned down the vocals for sure. I liked them a lot on the last one if only for the full embrace of that being as intense as possible mindset, but a lot of people weren't into it so I get why they'd be more enjoyable for many this time.

Meurtrières' Ronde de Nuit is worth keeping an eye on, releasing this August. The band's self-titled EP from 2020 is delightful heavy metal. Well worth checking out on Bandcamp.

New work from StringsSkald of Walknut/Temnozor fame. This is folk/pagan black in the vein of Temnozor and, in fact, apparently came from unrealised compositions for that project. Lots of flutes, surprisingly polished production and occasional sweet-sounding clean singing across 72 minutes.

Pretty good progressive thrash metal from Lithuania. Has a Coroner circa Mental Vortex/Grin mechanical dystopian vibe, yet not as techy. The few saxophone solos fit nicely too.

Only a few plays into this so still trying to figure out where it fits in my AOTY rankings but it's already right up there.

I've been spinning this one a lot over the last couple of weeks. Killer melodic black metal from Holland's Infinity, 'The untamed hunger':

Austere's Corrosion Of Hearts is a pretty rad album. Great return for a very missed band in the DSBM - atmospheric black metal scene. Great melodies and atmospheres with some rather addicting grooves underneath - it's repetitive, but not meandering; moreso it pulls you in and you just get tranced.

https://austere-official.bandcamp.com/a ... -of-hearts

I'm going to crack into the new Fen album soon as well; the singles were outstanding so I'm expecting this to maybe be my AOTY.

It sucks that there isn't a full album of this:

https://totaldissonanceworship.bandcamp ... allid-veil

uc Lemay (Gorguts) - Guitar, Vocals
Dave Davidson (Revocation, Gargoyl) - Guitar
Liam Wilson (The Dillinger Escape Plan, John Frum, Azusa) - Bass
Elliot Hoffman (Car Bomb) - Drums

Yeah I heard this song a few weeks ago. Definitely keen on a full album if one ever eventuates. What a killer line up.

Aye, great stuff. It's everything I enjoy in death metal : it's thick, groovy and filthy. Love the d-beats influences too.

New album by German heavy metal band The Night Eternal came out today. Fatale is pretty good, really digging the vocals and guitar work, like a cross between Judas and Candlemass.

New Deitus (UK black metal), 'Irreversible', is a pleasant surprise. I love their previous two albums, 'Via dolorosa' in particular is a melodic and agressive work of art, and at first I was a bit worried when I heard the single 'Voyeur', a laid-back composition with clean female vocals nothing like anything they had done before.
Now, in the context of the full album, it works wonderfully, while elsewhere it's still business as usual. Great release, interesting seeing them venture outside their comfort zone and definitely one for the AOTY list!

PS: The Night Eternal and Serpent Corpse sound great, cheers!

Listening to it right now and I'm loving it, I haven't listened to the debut in a while so I can't judge properly but the feeling is that this is the superior album, I think he has benefited from making a shorter album. And even with a lesser length I think he has given his music more varied parts.

If you liked the new Ascended Dead album then give this one a go. Same guitarist/vocalist, and I think I may prefer this one slightly.

Ekrom - Uten Nådigst Formildelse

Some nice second wave bm worship, but not the lofi raw kind that is all over the place right now. Rather clean if quiet production with nice use of synths and some great vocals. Really liking this one
