Good day,
Greg.

My first exposure to CoB and still my favorite from them. Love the big Pantera influence it added (that "Rise" homage in the title track sure is overt), impressive how they made it gel so well.

Cool :)
The 2nd Sixpounder Solo - Unbelivengly hard. I play it since 2006 and still don't have it figured out...

I still throw on Follow the Reaper from time to time. Band was fun when I was in high school, got me deeper into heavy music at that age.

Fave songs from The Reaper?

I still think the intro to Needled 24/7 is nearly perfect. That build up, then the screaming guitar, moving into that riff. FUCK!

Love this album, and the band in general. Hatebreeder / Follow the Reaper / Hate Crew Deathroll is a run that could rival almost anything quality wise.

I remember hearing Needled 24/7 before release, and thinking it was a bit weird. The vibe and atmosphere felt different to Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder, which I had grown accustomed to. I wasn't sure what to think of it, and my brother was like 'what are you on about, this is awesome!'. Of course I grew to love it, and every other song on the album too. My favourite here would be Bodom Beach Terror, but yeah... they're all winners.

One thing I love about HCDR is the drumming. Really fluid and helps drive the songs. It helped me appreciate Jaska and take more notice of his playing on other albums.

If I had to credit a singular moment for getting me into metal it would be hearing the Needled 24/7 intro for the first time.

Hate Crew holds up. It's a little modern with trappings of what was going on in nu-metal and metal core, but whatever negative tendencies they occupy in the album are cancelled out with the psychotic soloing and general thrashing. Probably their last masterpiece of their drunken kung-fu Finnish swagger.

Great album! This was THE metal album when I was in highschool, everyone who was into metal was all about this. While it started the trend towards the more simplified, "tough guy" direction they went to on Are You Dead Yet? (I ate that shit up at the time though), there was still enough wild guitar and keyboard shenanigans that holds it above everything they put out until at least Halo of Blood. Trying to learn Needled 24/7 was a right of passage for me on guitar (never could quite get it). The Carcass homage in Bodom Beach Terror still sounds super badass.

Same! Having a song explode like that right from the beginning was mindblowing. What an incredible gateway into the world of extreme metal that's still unique and killer 20 years later.

I only ever listened to Metallica until I heard the intro to Needled 24/7. I can still see where I was standing some 20 years ago when I first heard it - I knew it was what I had been looking for my whole life.

Follow the Reaper is still my favorite with Kissing the Shadows being the best song of theirs, hands down.

Wow, this makes me feel old. I got into them on the record before, but I remember going to buy HCDr on its release day. I don't listen to them much anymore, but their first 4 records are stamped all over my early metal-listening days/high school/early college years.

I didn't like CoB at first. They were already beginning to make a name for themselves when I first heard them in 2000/2001 with 'Follow the Reaper' and I found them too clean and too polished. And then I listened to their earlier albums. I particularly enjoyed 'Hatebreeder' and 'Bed of Razors' was the song that really converted me and made a fan.

Hatecrew Deathroll was their last great album for me. I stopped listening to them after it. I was lucky enough to have seen CoB perform here in the Philippines back in 2014.

Hate Crew Deathroll was, IIRC, my introduction to Children of Bodom. Maybe I had heard some other songs by them before, since I had a few metalhead friends who just sent me individual songs from various bands on MSN Messenger at the time, so I had a bunch of Kalmah, Edguy, Finntroll and CoB songs on my parents computer. But I distinctively remember watching the videoclip of Needled 24/7 and being hooked by both the song and the visuals.

I used to love the album, but eventually got more into their first three, especially Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper.

20 years ago seems like such a long time, but I still remember these years so well. It's crazy how time flies.

This album definitely got some heavy playtime back in my high school years. Sixpounder and Triple Corpse Hammerblow are certified bangers! Never liked it as much as Follow The Reaper and Hatebreeder though.

Don't forget the "Sixpounder" intro riff. It's like "A New Level" played in reverse!

Overall, HCD is one of my favorites from them, right alongside Follow the Reaper. So many memorable moments on this record!

Even though I'd always enjoyed HCD I used to see it as their 'sellout' album. Not that it was a major change in style, more that it sacrificed some the neoclassical side of the band for more aggression.

Having recently just listened to the first 4 I was surprised to find myself enjoying it the most. Hatebreeder used to be my fav but I found that one rather boring.

I remember feeling like Hate Crew was a bit of a sellout album at the time, but in retrospect I think it holds up extremely well. The riffs are very well written and the production is awesome, especially for the era. Giving their sound a slice of thrash and groove really did a lot to make things heavier and more well rounded.

I fell off of Bodom after Are You Dead Yet, but those first 4-5 albums are really something special. It is hard to understate how much influence the band had on metal of the era and bringing technicality and shred guitar into more extreme metal.

Fantastic album, my favorite along with Are You Dead Yet? The production is just superb. Since COB is one of the most important bands for me, I can listen to HCD or any of their albums any time and enjoy the heck out out of it, even after having listened to their stuff a million times.

Without a fucking doubt! "End of Story" hahaha.
Hard for me to pick a favorite song, or even record for that matter. I love all of it, and Skeletons too :metal:

Wish I could have seen them live. He was one of the best in my mind.

While the first 4 are all really well done, the other 6 are really worthwhile too. I like when bands mature and don't exactly cling to the exact same thing, especially after such a long period of aika.

This band was important for young me getting into metal and I still listen out of nostalgia every once in awhile after some drinks. It's interesting looking back on it how strangely unique CoB was. There really isn't any band that sounds quite like them. You have Kalmah, Wintersun, Skyforger, Norther, and all of them. But they never were EXACTLY like CoB. There was sort of a bit of almost campiness to CoB that other bands lacked. While a band like Norther might be kind of close, CoB had a completely different energy. Seeing them live was sort of like seeing a weird death metal hair band. They were playing death metal but with the energy of Motley Crue. They'd be ripping solos while pouring beers into each others mouths, slamming shots, covering each others eyes, playing each others instruments. Drum solos. Keyboard and guitar jams. Their shows were quite something. I mean Laiho admittedly loved hair metal, and I think it came through in their live shows and even in their recordings in how they are so flashy. Other bands come close to their sound, but they didn't have the glam energy which I think set them apart. Bodom were a party band, which you can't say about Wintersun of Kalmah.

Jebus fawk man you nailed it! Allu really set himself apart from just his playing alone. And yes, the stage antics were always so much gad damn fun. That coupled with the fact that he was such an amazing guitar player. He was COB in my opinion. It was pretty evident during the last 5-10 years too. He wrote the songs, arranged the music: Janne and Jaska were really awesome but I always felt like bass would be easy to replace. Roope was an awesome guitarist in his own right too: STONE! I never got to see them live, and as you know, Alexi always claimed they were a 'live band/touring band' and it showed. Alexander of the olden days was a great guitar player too.....as Daniel is.
I like Norther, Kalmah and Ensiferum too, but you're right: no one ever sounded like COB. I will say the newer band 'Induction' has some slight COB similarities from what I've heard. I can't play like Alexi, nor do I try because I don't like getting depressed haha.
I could go on and on about COB....

It's a rare case for me, it was one of the first metal albums I ever listened to and still to this day it's one of my favourite records, but I've never listened to any other Children of Bodom releases, I've listened to singles from other albums and they've never caught my attention, maybe I'm missing something special with their first albums but I have zero interest in them to be honest.
