I just saw that the day before Iron Maiden's concert in Ljubljana there will be concert of Steve Harris' British Lion in a smaller club also in Ljubljana! I must admit I haven't listened British Lion before, but I bought ticket anyway.

Saw them live one time back in 2019 in Bristow, VA. Amazing.

Also two questions:

1. What are some songs you guys consider straight-up power metal by Iron Maiden? I'd say Flash of the Blade and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are a few.

2. Is there a full list of their songs that has fantasy themes? So far I know of Flight of Icarus (Greek myth), Isle of Avalon (Excalibur), and I think a few songs from their Seventh album also has magic or stuff.

Love their Self-Titled album! Its different from your typical Iron Maiden album but it's still good. Its different mainly, because some of the key members change.

I think a lot of Maiden could be considered power metal. Sun and Steel anyone??

Anyone else remember this great website?
http://www.ironmaidencommentary.com/

Analysis of lyrical themes on all releases up to and including The Final Frontier. Sadly, the owner haven't updated it since 2011.
I remember I was obsessed with this site in high school :lol:

I also find the way they categorise the albums into different eras interesting!

Rising Force:
Iron Maiden -> Killers

Golden Years:
TNOTB -> Live After Death

Experimentation:
SIT -> Maiden England

Decline:
NPFTD -> Live at Donington

Rejuvenation:
The X Factor -> Virtual XI

Reunion:
Ed Hunter -> Death on the Road

Coming of Age:
AMOLAD -> TFF

Would be interesting to see where they would put the two recent albums

Well, I would put them into "contemplation" period.

Well, there is nothing wrong in contemplation :D

But, for real now, Senjutsu is great great record nonetheless. It needs some time to gel, but when it does it does it perfectly.

Agree! Absolutely LOVE Senjutsu! I didn't click *right* away, but when it did, WOW! The Book of Souls on the other hand, I really enjoyed when I first heard it, but now I feel it is one of Maiden's most uneven albums :o

Senjutsu feels to me kinda like TXF and AMOLAD does, in the way that it keeps a consistent mood and theme throughout, which I REALLY connect with! I also feel the storyteller element is very prevalent in Senjutsu, with tracks like The Parchment feeling like an old myth or legend being passed down :-D

Senjutsu has some really brilliant guitar stuff going on. The old Maiden double-axe and bass combo, that sort of rolling epic feel, in full force. Not sure what else people wanted. I think shortening the songs would cheapen it. "The Parchment" is top 5 songs they've done since the 80s ended for sure. A slow-burn jam, something a bit more pensive that suits what they are now.

I remember that Maiden lyric analysis site too. One of my earliest metal memories reading that stuff... funny it's still around.

For me it's not the riffs and not (necessarily) the song length, it's the production and overall sound quality of the songs, it's so weak and insipid that it sounds like a demo or some shit

Absolutely no one. Power metal is a different thing and Iron Maiden has never crossed the line. Epic heavy metal doesn't mean power metal.

Another possibility:

- THE RAW START
Iron Maiden/Killers

- THE CLASSIC PERIOD
TNOTB to SSOASS

- THE IDENTITY CRISIS
NPFTD to Virtual XI

- THE MISSED RETURN
BNW to AMOLAD

- THE GERIATRIC PERIOD
TFF to Senjutsu

What Bayley and Di'Anno era songs are better sung by Dickinson?

Phantom of the Opera
Iron Maiden
Futureal
Man on the Edge
lord of the Flies
Clansman

Otherwise, I prefer Paul's versions of his era. I've only heard a few of Blaze's songs sung by Bruce.
Concerning "Wrathchild", "Running Free", and "Killers", give me Paul.

Blaze's voice seems to fit the atmosphere of 'Sign of the Cross' a lot more than Bruce's, IMO.

None.
Each of those three vocalists really shine on the songs they originally sang on. Any kind of vice-versa just doesn't work for me.
Well, okay, maybe one: I prefer Blaze's version of 'Afraid to Shoot Strangers' over Dickinson's.

I think each era of the band tailored the music to the vocalist they had, so I don't really think Bruce does a better job singing Di'Anno era songs for example. The S/T-Killers era stuff really suits Paul's rougher voice. Not that Bruce does a bad job by any means, but I don't think you get the same feeling from him.

I like Senjutsu best followed by Seventh Son followed by Somewhere in Time.

I don't like Virtual XI.

I've never seen Bruce do a bad version of Killers. He nails it every time I've heard it. Wrathchild always seems to fall short.

What's your favorite Iron Maiden non-official concert video? Mine has to be Live at Santiago Chile 96. The setlist is perfect (TXF is my favorite album), the speed and sound is monstrous, Iron Maiden on steroids. The stage also has this very dark, nocturnal vibe thanks to the blue and grey haze that covers it by most of the show. The audience is also very energetic and engaging. This is also the concert of that infamous spitting incident.

One must wonder, however, why have Maiden released and re-released live albums with their other singers, but never Blaze? :P

Me too dude. The 2000s had some excellent comprehensive fan websites. There was that one, Encyclopedia Metallica, Ozzyhead, Judas Priest Info Pages, and Black Sabbath Online. Out of all of those only IMC and BSO are still even on the internet, and the latter is the only one that gets updated. My guess is the guy that ran IMC got fed up with the X-Factor rehashings like the rest of us and rage quit. I feel like the owner of EM did that after St. Anger too, cos that site shortly disappeared afterwards. :lol:

I LOVED the Iron Maiden Commentary back in the day. I always appreciate how in-depth it got with the ideas of individual songs’ meanings as well as the interconnected themes of the band at large and even those speculations of how a particular album showed the musicians (well, Steve Harris) at a certain stage in their life. It made me appreciate them a whole lot more and contributed to me thinking about those sorts of ideas with other bands as much as I do now. I miss these sort of in-depth band lore sites as opposed to the ”it mean whatever you want it to mean” bullshit that seems so much more pervasive today.

I've been coming back to Senjutsu regularly since it's release. It's also in the top for me. Especially CD2 is awesome. The Parchment is one of my favourite track by the band all time.

I just checked the set list on Setlist.com. They kicked the show off with “Caught Somewhere” and “Stranger In A Strange Land”. Great way to start!

And they played “Alexander”!!

You cannot believe how I screamed when they opened with Caught Somewhere in Time. I almost ran out of oxygen and fainted.

You guys should go and see them on this tour.

Yeah, they messed up the chorus singalong part of Heaven Can Wait. But they were so full of energy and the sound was so good I didn't care.

The setlist was pretty great. Maybe the only dud is Writing on the Wall, the Senjutsu title track could work better, but all in all, pretty great.

01. Caught Somewhere In Time
02. Stranger In A Strange Land
03. The Writing On The Wall
04. Days Of Future Past
05. The Time Machine
06. The Prisoner
07. Death Of The Celts
08. Can I Play With Madness
09. Heaven Can Wait
10. Alexander The Great
11. Fear Of The Dark
12. Iron Maiden

Encore:
13. Hell On Earth
14. The Trooper
15. Wasted Years

Some of my favorite Maiden songs are on the self-titled, specifically Strange World and Remember Tomorrow. Absolutely love that mellow and mystical, almost Floydian sound on those two. Shame they never really returned to it.
