Quote:
DARK ANGEL guitarist Jim Durkin has died at the age of 58.

Jim's passing was confirmed by his wife Annie on his Facebook page earlier today (Friday, March 10). She wrote: "With a broken and heavy heart, I want to share that the love of my life, my best friend and husband, Jimmy, passed away Wednesday morning. He was not alone as I was with him along with a few close friends until the end. He will be truly missed and no one can ever replace the love I have for him. May he rest in peace.

"Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours……. My Immortal Beloved. I will see you again."

Durkin had been sitting out some of DARK ANGEL's recent gigs. He was replaced at the shows by drummer Gene Hoglan's wife Laura Christine.

I was aware that Jim was sitting out some of the recent Dark Angel live shows but this is a huge shock. Needless to say he was an integral part of the band and one of the best songwriters in thrash. May he rest in peace.

This is absolutely devastating, Dark Angel was one of the main bands that got me into thrash metal. Rest in power Jim!

Man, this sucks, there have been so many deaths of great musicians lately... May he rest in peace, he will never be forgotten.

So bizarre to hear about death of Josua Madsen, drummer on last 4 Artillery albums (45, road accident) and then a couple hours later this! just shocked all round.

That fucking sucks. Definitely gonna be blasting Dark Angel's first three albums this weekend in memory of him.

I remember when he stepped away from touring with Dark Angel last year, Gene said something like "Jim let us know when we first got back together that there might be sometime in the future he'll have to take a break from the band." Here I figured it was just family stuff. Looks like it was something much more serious.

RIP

Darkness Descends was a pillar in my formative years as a teenager and a metalhead; thanks for making me feel so good and so unique with your music when and where everybody else had no clue.

Dark Angel were definitely an ingredient in my early days of discovering metal and thrash in particular. Darkness Descends was an early one when I started buying albums.

R.I.P.

I think it was the first extreme metal album I ever bought on vinyl at the age of 17 or so, and that album was a revelation to me...

I still remember the ads Combat Records ran to hype DD: "We've stopped signing new bands. Because we won't find anything heavier than this."

A year later, Combat signed Death.

Hahaha, I think this is one of my favorite posts ever.
I dug those old Speed Kills comps (Someone reissue those comps on CD please!) they were my first exposure to Dark Angel and Death, The Burning Of Sodom and Open Casket if I remember correctly, it was love at first listen.
Combat had so many great bands and albums, very cool label.
In fact after I binged all 4 Dark Angel albums I chased them up with Forbidden and Exodus last night for a bit of a Combat fest. Absolutely timeless stuff that I'll never get tired of listening to.

So much for that "new Dark Angel album" (we were never gonna get it, it was like whats his face dying before he could finish Berserk).

Cranked Darkness Descends earlier today. Still kills!

They still can carry on the new record; he didn't play in Times Does Not Heal, so not the first time he will not be part of a record.

Another extremely talented musician who passed away too young... He was not even 60. I love his work with Dark Angel. Darkness Descends and Leaven Scars. Some of the most amazing thrash metal there is! May he rest in peace.

RIP to a legend gone far too soon. For those unaware, Durkin also played guest lead guitar on Witchery's "One Foot in the Grave" from their Witchkrieg album. May his legacy live on.

R.I.P. Durkin!

Never say never, my fave D.A. album has the Meyer/Eriksen combo and Hoglan wrote most stuff anyway, A lot even with Eriksen.
No idea though if Eriksen still makes music or if he's even still alive.
But then again.... do I want a new Dark Angel album anyway or are the memories sufficient?

The Dark Angel tour seems to be getting a lot of press and rave reviews, but am I the only one that finds it kind of exploitative? Like...you couldn't do this tour in 2016 while Durkin was alive?

Is it just me or have a shit ton of metal musicians passed this year in particular? I mean obviously everyone has to die someday, but seriously, this year seems like it's been a doozy...

They did, internationally in 2019 at least.

There have been several attempts at reviving DA. So no, I don't see the 'exploitative' in it no matter how I look at it.
Furthermore my fave DA line up had the Meyer/Eriksen tandem (I honestly don't know why Eriksen isn't with them since Durkin passed away) but Christine does a great job anyway so no real complaints here.
