Cryptopsy-“Slit Your Guts”.

When I close my eyes and think “death metal”, the opening two riffs are usually the first thing I heard in my head.

It’s weird because I don’t think of Cryptopsy as a favorite band. An overall excellent band, a legendary band, but not a favorite band, if that makes sense. But this song is fucking iconic and those first two riffs are the most quintessential death metal riffs. In my mind, at least.

Yeah man, this would be my pick. I’m not the biggest death metal guy in the world and a lot of the OSDM in this thread sounds dated to me, but Slit Your Guts (and really all of NSV) still hold up among the heaviest shit I’ve ever heard. I didn’t know music could get that heavy when I first heard it as a young teen. The breakdown/slam/whatever the fuck you want to call it in this song is untouched brutality - the quintessential DM song for my tastes and personal metal history.

Yes, that groove is incredible! Like, neck-snappingly, hazardous-to-listen-to-while-drivingly good.

This made me curious about data on this so I poked around Spotify:

Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face (27M streams)
Death - Symbolic (19M streams)
Behemoth - Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel (17M streams)
Vader - Triumph of Death (8M streams)
Deicide - In the Minds of Evil (8M streams)
Entombed - Left Hand Path (7M streams)
Morbid Angel - Immortal Rites (6M streams)
Bolt Thrower - The Killchain (6M streams)
Nile - Lashed to the Slave Stick (4M streams)
Suffocation - Pierced From Within (3M streams)
Cryptopsy - Graves of the Fathers (2M streams)
Dismember - Override of the Overture (2M streams)
Autopsy - Charred Remains (1M streams)
Pestilence - Twisted Truth (1M streams)

Outliers: Death's Voice of the Soul has 28M and Obituary's Redneck Stomp has 14M (what??) but since those are intros/interludes I left them out of the main list.

This is fascinating data. But Voice Of the Soul is that high because its not a death metal song at all and has high normie appeal. Immortal Rites being the #1 Morbid Angel song....I feel like it should be Chapel Of Ghouls, but at least it's something from Altars Of Madness. Killchain is a Mudvayne song. The Deicide one is really surprising. If it was gonna be anything outside of the first 3 albums I'd figured it'd be Hoamge For Satan. Symbolic is my favorite Death song from a riff perspective so no complaints there.

But to answer the question, I would say either Hammer Smashed Face, Chapel Of Ghouls or Left Hand Path, as others have mentioned.

Since we're out of decade polls to do, stuff like this could actually be an okay mini-poll if formalised.

"Best death metal song of all time"
You have 10 votes, no particular order. Track with most votes wins.

Amboss were a most excellent discovery for me today, I need to check them out immediately.

I would've also thrown in the tour-de-force that is The Eclipse (by The Chasm), but since that's already been mentioned... here's THE song where everything just came together to create a monumentally crushing piece.

I can dig this, except I'll stick with 5 since I think that makes for a more definitive selection.

1) Bolt Thrower - For Victory
2) Death - Pull the Plug
3) Morbid Angel - Chapel of Ghouls
4) Dismember - Override of the Overture
5) Pestilence - Echoes of Death

Not much of an explanation needed for most of these. Could have picked many BT songs, but for me FV reigns supreme as their most regal, triumphant-sounding statement.

Cannibal corpse - I cum blood

No bullshit, just gut-spilling simple death metal! Only thing that separates this song from Hammer smashed face are the more grotesk lyrics. Love it.

This gets a +1 from me too. Though I agree Hammer Smashed Face is also a good contender.

I wouldn't throw money down on it without giving it a ton of thought, but one that I know would be in the final group would be Master "Cut Through the Filth"

For me, it's Bolt Thrower's Unleashed Upon Mankind. It's a simple track but the way it builds up its riffs is just masterful, it just gets heavier and heavier and it never really lets up once it reaches full speed.

For me is Scourge of Iron, probably the heaviest riff that any band composed. Not even Cannibal Corpse could replicate what they did in that song.

I like Left Hand Path, especially the solo and the outro, but if we are talking about riffs, it has to be Scourge of Iron.

Since it's being brought up in this thread, does anyone know what's up with Voice of the Soul's playcount on spotify? I asked this on the M-A discord and it seemed like no one knew. Was it featured in a TV show or something? Or maybe a glitch on Spotify's end. I don't think it is that popular, metal or not.

Seemed obvious to me, it's clean and therefore more accessible.

For me it's An Act of the Unspeakable by Autopsy. It just oozes filth the way DM should

[...] Atheist - Mother Man

After reading the first page and unsurprisingly agreeing with a couple of picks, I thought to myself if no one says Atheist, I'll come forward with An Incarnation's Dream. Mother Man surely is the greatest cannabis-related dm song of all time, though. ;-)

Anyway, with a smirk, I say:

Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon - Blood from Stone

Lovely 'non-technical' tempo changes, this one keeps me so engaged, the right amount of everything here. https://youtu.be/_YqEwNw6E0A

No actually no joke it's a great track until Steven Wilson opens his mouth, then it really is just wimp central.

But that's pretty much true of everything off blackwater park, it just wimps out too often

I'll go severe burns by Nihilist, it's just amazing

Great pick btw, I would've overlooked it

Ive come around to thinking War Master might be the most complete bolt thrower, shreds of sanity is my pick off the album, but the first two minutes up till the guitar solo on profane creation are sublime, that shit is so fuckin heavy man so fuckin heavy
