"Brazilian death metallers CRYPTA will relase their second album, “Shades Of Sorrow”, on August 4, 2023 via Napalm Records. Formed in 2019 by former NERVOSA members Luana Dametto (drums) and Fernanda Lira (vocals), and now featuring guitarists Tainá Bergamaschi and Jessica di Falchi, CRYPTA released its acclaimed first album, “Echoes Of The Soul”, in 2021. In celebration of the announcement of “Shades Of Sorrow”, the four female piece now release the first single off the album, entitled “Lord Of Ruins”. The song comes with an official music video.

Luana Dametto (drums) on “Lord of Ruins”:
“’Lord of Ruins’ was our pick for a first single ‘cause it combines both melodic and aggressive melodies that are present throughout the whole album. So we thought it’s a good representation of what to expect of the whole piece. It’s also the final song of the record and it has a very impactful meaning. It’s the closure of the whole album concept and it also fits perfectly to the artwork concept we had in mind.”

Fernanda Lira (bass, vocals) on Shades of Sorrow:
“Shades of Sorrow is a semi-concept album which meaning describes a journey through the depths of our psyche when facing tough battles. It’s a trip to the many shades of pain we sometimes have to face while enduring our lives challenges. The songs are the perfect gloomy, dark, emotional soundtrack for this journey.”

Pre-order “Shades of Sorrow” AT THIS LOCATION.

Shades of Sorrow tracklisting:
1 The Aftermath
2 Dark Clouds
3 Poisonous Apathy
4 The Outsider
5 Stronghold
6 The Other Side of Anger
7 The Limbo
8 Trial of Traitors
9 Lullaby for the Forsaken
10 Agents of Chaos
11 Lift the Blindfold
12 Lord of Ruins
13 The Closure"

I really enjoyed their first album, and the new single is great! :hyper:

Kinda surprised by this. Style-wise it's all over the place. But if this is going to be a semi-concept album... Somewhat early though for a concept album. Hopefully in the end they won't deviate too much from death metal since they do it real well. While the drums sound punchier, they took out all the life from the blast-beats which is a shame because Luana is one of the few drummers who makes blast-beats sound good.

Why do the blastbeats have a completely different snare sound?

By not keeping the same level of power/intensity when playing the blast beat compared to other parts. When playing a blast beat, there is less time for the stick to come back up, which means a shorter stroke for each hit. The snare isn't being hit as hard in the blast as it is in other parts.

That's all completely normal, but what I think is weird is that snare is not just very loud in the mix, but very natural as well - which is why these dynamics are coming through so obviously. A common method used is to mix a pre-recorded sample of the same snare in with the natural sound from the mics, which then keeps the sound more consistent across the entire song, whilst still allowing dynamics to be present where needed.

Okay. But during the blasts it suddenly turns into the St. Anger snare.

She's a great drummer, dont think they really needed to 'help' her drum wise.

This one is way more of an old-school FLDM track - getting lots of Death and Monstrosity vibes on this one. I have a feeling this will be a very varied album.

What are you guys thinking about the production?
Great great songs, but i think it sounds too ''digital''.

Production works better for the second single. I like the fact that the drums stand out, which is good when you have a great drummer like Luana. Snare sounds a too dry for her playing. I also like that you can actually hear the bass. Problem is, and this is particularly noticeable in the first single, that guitars don't stand out at all. The vocals somehow drown the guitars. Given that, Fernanda should have limited her screams.

My favorite so far. Holy shit, those deep growls. Sound better than the screechy stuff. Man, she should go for growls most of the time and only occasionally screechy screams. Drums as always kick major ass. Taina needs a new V. Metal just sounds better when played on cool shaped guitars.

Pretty strong album. Stronghold is a monster of a song.

Because Sonia isn't known for her loyalty

Sonia decided to focus full-time on Cobra Spell once she realized that she could no longer juggle both bands. She's still homies with them, there's no animus there.

Doesn't seem like death metal was really Sonia's thing. A shame because her work with Crypta was great and beats whatever the heck it is she's doing now.

Neither was Jessica's, up to now. But oh boy, did she adapt quickly to the genre.

Overall a very good album, it's in my top 10. But it does lack some energy and could use a lot more headbanging moments.

First time I'm hearing of this band, and I like this song the most of the three posted in this thread. I might check out the album.

I agree that production is polished to a fault, but the drummer really stands out and the riffs are pretty great. Reminds me of Serenity in Fire era Kataklysm, which was an album I listened to quite a bit when it came out.

The best songs were not released as singles. Check these out:

The album won me over, though I still prefer Echoes of the Soul. Interested to see where they go from here, and what changes might come once Jessica starts writing. Not sure why this band connects to me. Should be too clean and accessible for my tastes.
