US death metal force Incantation will release their thirteenth full length, Unholy Deification, on August 25 through Relapse Records. From the press release:

Quote:
Death Metal icons INCANTATION prepare the masses for their new album, Unholy Deification, via Relapse Records. Edified over three-plus decades of experience, Unholy Deification is the group's 13th full-length album. Validated by peers seasoned and new, INCANTATION are more vital than ever - the lineup, featuring founding guitarist/vocalist John McEntee, drummer Kyle Severn, bassist Chuck Sherwood, and guitarist Luke Shively, displays death metal know-how and the power of determination.

"I'm not interested in playing it safe," McEntee asserts. "I think other people feel that there are limits to what we do. However, I don't see it that way. If it feels right, then it's Incantation. The songs we write are an honest expression of ourselves. When people hear the new album, I hope they think, "Why are these guys so pissed off?!" Rage gives focus, which is why this album turned out the way it did."

Lyrically, Unholy Deification originates with Sherwood. An avid reader and occult logician, the INCANTATION bassist wanted to capture a fully-realized concept of evolution through enlightenment. Expect thought-provoking, historically-derived intellection. That the mortal-to-deity narrative interacts with the merciless musical conflagration of hard-hitting tracks such as "Concordat (The Pact) I," "Homunculus (Spirit Made Flesh) IX," and "Invocation (Chthonic Merge) X". Make no mistake - the ferocious new album, featuring guests Jeff Beccera (Possessed), Henry Veggian (ex-Revenant), and Dan Vadim Von (Morbid Angel), is pure Death Metal.

INCANTATION's sepulchral pandemonium is visually enhanced by award-winning artist and longstanding collaborator Eliran Kantor (Immolation, Kreator, Cavalera, and more.) The end result is an interpretation of Italian Renaissance masters, but thrust into INCANTATION's cauldron of chromatic malice.

That cover is badass, and Incantation have been reinvigorated since, I'd say, 2012's 'Vanquish in Vengeance'. I'll very likely pick this up :headbang:

Great album cover, and great single too! Definitely stoked to hear this album when it comes out.

Looking forward to checking this out! I've never been all that into Incantation but I saw them with Nile last year and it definitely changed my mind a bit. They were great.

I actually quite liked their last album and this new single is pretty good. Will be preordering this when I get paid.

Also, I saw them on that tour they did with Morbid Angel and Watain and they were great. Straight up my favorite performance of that night, and that show seemed like it could have fallen apart at any moment (bad weather delayed it for a bit but the bands eventually showed up). Still the only time I've seen them. I need to catch a headline gig since 30 minutes didn't seem like enough. I like how they opened with an Evil Dead 2 sample and fog machine - spooky!

it's a really interesting cover art but damn if Eliran Kantor isn't starting to get a monopoly on metal album covers

I know I'm going to be the only one saying this, but I think Incantation are just another legacy DM band that hasn't done anything interesting since their heyday. Diabolical Conquest was the last album of theirs that had any real memorability. 25 years later and a bunch of albums in, they've more or less created a rut for themselves. I'm not saying they need to reinvent the wheel or anything, but all their albums since DC have been a step down in terms of songwriting, which has rendered their post-DC material interchangeable, minus nuances in production.

This has been the fate of nearly all other death metal bands from the old era (Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Unleashed, etc.). But, I get it: When you've been around this long, it's hard to change and stray from the formula that allows you to put out an album every several years in order to tour so you can make your bread and butter. I think the constant recycling of ideas for riffs and lyrics, and insipid artwork are all indicative of this.

Going back to Incantation, I would say that, at this point, it's better to go with any of the numerous Incantaion clones that are at least trying to capture the sound of Onward to Golgotha, which will always be their best. Mind you, Incantation-core becomes tiring after a while, but it's definitely a step above the generic let's-put-an-album out-every-few-years-so-we-can-tour schlock these dudes have been doing.

I'm pretty sure the answer to "why are these guys so angry?" isn't "because rage gives focus". Still, i'm not complaining.

I'm ready for it, and will end up picking up a copy. Incantation are like comfort food for me, and I've enjoyed almost all of their records on some level.

Idk, I mean, are you really listening? Have you actually picked up any of the last 4 albums and really given them a chance or have you just kind of browsed them or a few songs here and there? Because I'd agree with you on everything that followed Diabolical Conquest through Primordial Domination... but starting with Vanquish in Vengeance they've just been brutally on top of their game and the songwriting is fantastic. It's very dense music, as we all know, but the structures and nuance and detail within are just outstanding these past ten years, so... you might give some of those more recent albums another chance, especially if you left off that far back.

And this is coming from someone who agrees with you on Diabolical Conquest, that's one of the ones I spin the most.

Vanquish in Vengeance and Dirges of Elysium are pretty cool. I agree the resto of their recent stuff is just ok.

I picked up the last album, Sect of Vile Divinities, about three months ago. I was a bit surprised how polished the production was on that album. I hope they go for a sound is a bit 'rougher' this time around.

Pretty sure the band took care of the production. Dan Swano handled the mixing and mastering as he has for their past few albums.

Agreed. They had a stretch of soso albums after Diabolical Conquest but they started kiling it again in 2012.

For a band with so many members in and out, including singers, they're fairly consistent sounding.

I'm cautiously optimistic for this one as Incantation are a fairly hit or miss band for me. I like the first 3, Vanquish in Vengeance and the last one. The others don't excite me as much. That said I'll probably check this out upon release.

Really like those more doomer moments on the second single. I have a feeling I'm gonna end liking this one more than the first single.

Nope sadly yet again they fail to do anything for me. Haven't done since Onward To Golgotha in 92 and that was a push to like. I can't stand the dirge. I respect them as musicians but their musical output is for me a terrible waste of talent. There are no beats, tempos, head banging moments or anything to draw me into their new music (or old).
Good luck to them in a currently swamped (no pun intended) market for dirge death metal.
If they for once employed a good producer and engineer they might, just might emerge from the swamp.

I like the second single more than the first. I hope the overall album is a step up from the last one. The last album was okay but was a long way from their best stuff.

Decent enough album. Kind of just background music really, but some of the riffs are cool. Stodgy but it gets the job done.

I was not trying to diss the album, and call it modern Arch Enemy or something shit. It does have a bit of melodic variety and less murk though.
