Just want to know different types of metal and explore. There were many genres I missed such as glam metal and epic black metal

In most cases it's used as shorthand for bands that sound like Summoning. If you look at most of the bands on the archives that have that genre tag they're at the very least heavily inspired by Summoning if not outright clones

Well the list at the top of that linked page covers most things on here. But there are some bands whose only listed metal genre isn't in that list. Mainly alternative metal, neoclassical metal, post-metal and southern metal. Once you browse some search results for bands under each one you'll soon discover all the possible sub-subgenres going on.

This is every known genre of acceptable metal. We have found six so far:

  • Up metal
  • Down metal
  • Charm metal
  • Strange metal
  • Top metal
  • Bottom metal

There are no other genres as far as we know today.

Hydrogen and helium are proto-metal. Lithium is the first real metal.

since it's highly melodic, bottom metal is also known as beauty metal, but rob halford prefers the term bottom metal to complement the more aggressive top metal, so that's used more frequently

For instance, if you don't know the existence of brutal death metal, you are not able to find this in that page unless you browse through death metal via advanced search, and that's not the way

I didn't know "glam metal" before I paid attention to Pantera, so there must be more subgenres that I haven't heard of. At least I would like to know acceptable genres/subgenres of this site, not those niche genres like brutal thrash or kawaii metal

alpha metal and omega metal

I've always thought there should be a canonical list of genres that provides a definition and examples of popular bands in the genre, like how Wikipedia does it. Or even an announcement or forum post when a new genre is added or gains popularity. I made a post about this way back when and was told that genres are too hard to define :grumble:

Rate Your Music lists musical genres and defines them. It's not perfect, but usually much better then what Wikipedia does.

I guess that's not necessarly something that MA's admins and mods team want to do, but that's fine. There's other websites doing it.

For instance, if you don't know the existence of brutal death metal, you are not able to find this in that page unless you browse through death metal via advanced search, and that's not the way

Click 'Death' on the page, and then read the Genre column of the results. Within the first 15 bands are examples of progressive death metal, melodic death metal, crossover, technical death metal, slam and brutal death metal. So the page is a pretty good resource for gathering a list of what you want.

Sure, there are a few that will be hard to find that way because they're relatively rare on the Archives, eg. funk metal. But if you put together an almost complete list then we could see if we notice anything missing. In the time it took us to write posts in this thread we could just about have done it by now!

Pagan Metal is the main one used on the Archives that's not in your list yet. Some bands have the word "extreme" in their genre, eg. Extreme Progressive Metal. A few have "Celtic", but rarely without Folk.

Some have "psychedelic", eg. Psychedelic Doom Metal. I figure it's basically a shorter way of saying Psychedelic Hard Rock/Doom Metal, or at least indicating Heavy Psych influences (psychedelic hard rock is known as Heavy Psych on RYM and elsewhere).

The rest will pretty much all just be more permutations of what you have.

Thanks,

I missed Pagan Metal, though it's similar to Folk/Celtic/Medieval I guess since they are often associated with Folk Metal.
Extreme Metal is a term to cover black, death or thrash metal, according to moderators.
I didn't know Psychedelic Metal but I have heard of psychedelic rock. Perhaps it's like what you said it's the shorter term.

All I know is, if one of those pretentious instrumental-album guitar noodling guys doesn't call their style of music "buttshred," then the entire act of compiling a list of genres is utterly pointless.

Why have a list that doesn't include "buttshred"?

It's also just difficult to define genres, subgenres, etc. because they're social constructions and not actually "real" since they can only mean what is commonly understood (but will also mean different things in different places at different times). That being said, I'm all for making a list and hashing it out here! Why not?

Didn't see War/Bestial Black Metal on the list, I think war metal has a pretty distinct sound and I guess bestial black is just another name for it? I could be wrong though.

I listen to this genre but the site doesn't use this tag so I didn't include it.

There's also buttcore and assgrind.
