Also, it's extremely weird for me seeing all these posts saying that some very technical, dissonant, or avant garde type bands are "gentle". Howls of Ebb doesn't sound "gentle", it sounds like getting lost within a surrealist Escher style painting.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "gentle" is. You seem to fall in the "gentle" = "easy listening" camp, which doesn't line up with my definition. To me the production is the biggest factor, and Howls of Ebb are very, very light on distortion with a very airy and expensive master. They are surreal, yes, but not very heavy or aggressive. It's like wandering into a perfume store.

But other people in this thread are using "gentle" to describe anything that's compositionally simple, which misses the entire point to me. Like, Death and Obituary I can see being gentle (mostly because of the production, not necessarily because they have simple riffs and song structures), but Bolt Thrower? Jungle Rot? These bands both sound like a cinder block to the fucking face, nothing about them is "gentle" in the way that I'd use the word.

I'd agree with this. The production sure plays a big part in how "mellow" a record with a dark atmosphere will be perceived, and i'd say Howls of ebb is a good example with their spaced out organic sounding production; completely opposite to e.g. Portal who have more compressed and suffocating atmosphere. Hell, i would say that a band like The Cure isn't very happy sounding in their compositions yet i couldn't call them rough or gross sounding because postpunk generally tends to be minimalist in the approach to sounds

This is a question phrased in such a way that every possible answer sounds idiotic. One of the primary attributes of death metal is that it isn't gentle, so to answer it you need to stretch either the definition of "gentle" or the definition of "death metal" well past the breaking point. It's like asking which barbershop quartet is the most brutal.

Horrendous is pretty gentle all things considered for a death metal band, kinda only works for them when they play more melodic instead of an all out assault, that's not their strong suit imo

Of course I could just be a cunt and say entombed in comparison to Nihilist or something but I'm actually struggling to come up with examples mostly because the modern death metal scene just seems to have no real bite to it imo

death, cynic, and atheist are all decent contenders, though how primarily death metal you want will of course come in to play

on a totally not-what-you-meant tangent, i'll throw in lykathea aflame - they're solidly in the brutal end of the spectrum, but the term gentle definitely also applies to them more so than any other death metal band i can think of (mild or tame, definitely not)

Cynic yes, but death no and atheist is a no as well, piece of time is front to back with lethal fuckin shit and even a record like Elements is far too cryptic in delivery to be gentle, Cynic had the enlightened characteristic to them so they apply

Found this band, Rude. It isn't old-school, it is pre-school. Very gentle.

Spoiler: show
