Although many supergroups throughout history have been created almost exclusively for marketing reasons, it is always an interesting proposal when members of different established bands form a common project. This is a topic to comment on this kind of bands. Which ones are your favourites? Which ones were a disappointment for you? Do you think it should be a more common practice and encouraged by record companies? I read you.

Depends of what is classified as a supergroup. I tend to think of supergroups that consist of members from at least 3 established bands of a genre, but as a general rule, these fall into the 'project' category, usually putting out one or at most 2 albums, which usually also end up being less than the sum of their parts. One such album I thoroughly enjoy though is I - Between Two Worlds.

On the other hand, if they continue making albums and tour, then I tend to think of it as just a band with members that have played in well-known bands before, not as a supergroup - see Lock up or Bloodbath.

Should it be encouraged by record companies? I don't think so, since the real supergroups very rarely work well, probably because of clashing egos and conflicting schedules.

I can't remember this one, it's on the tip of my tongue, but if I can recall, Nuclear Blast had several artists collab in one big supergroup to release one or two albums. If anyone can help me remember it, that would be great.

Nuclear Blast Allstars. One album was power metal and the other was melodeath. Peter Wichers wrote most if not all the material for the melodeath album. That supergroup was one of the better ones I remember hearing. I swear most supergroups make either dull to downright horrible music like Hellyeah.

There was one in the 80s, called Thrasher, which despite the name wasn't actually thrash. I haven't heard their only album but it's not rated very highly here.

There was that Roadrunner United thing as well in the mid 2000s, where the label scattered just about everyone on their roster onto a bunch of songs. If you ever wanted to hear King Diamond, Glen Benton, Max Cavalera, Peter Steele, Mikael Akerfeldt and Dani Filth all on the same album, it's got you covered. Some of the songs are alright but the whole thing feels like a compilation of rejected B-sides.

It seems like these kinds of projects always show a lot of promise but end up underdelivering, and then everyone forgets about them.

I really liked Dimension Zero, featuring members from In Flames, HammerFall and Diabolique, who released a wonderful Gothenburg melodeath gem in the late 90's:

I - Between Two Worlds may be my single favorite supergroup album of all time. Members of Immortal / Gorgoroth / Enslaved doing super Motorhead-influenced epic black metal that's halfway to Viking-era Bathory and halfway to At the Heart of Winter. Absolutely godly stuff, wish they'd do another album, though I doubt they're all on good enough terms at this point.

I don't know if you can call a two-man project a "supergroup" but the Shelton Chastain demo that got dug up a few years ago- with Mark Shelton from Manilla Road on vocals and David Chastain (of Chastain/CJSS fame) on everything else- is absolutely incredible. Wish they'd done more with it!

That reminds me, Dave Ellefson is also in Dieth, another band that's technically a supergroup.

Avantasia is still very fun to listen to, though they've been leaning a bit less on metal post-Metal Opera, the lyrics are often incomprehensible, and the last album was subpar. Tobias Sammet's songwriting is some of the finest theatrics in power metal aside from Khan-era Kamelot.

Sorry for the late response, but thanks for helping me remember this band. I did like both albums they made, though I personally like Out of the Dark a bit more.

How is Vital Remains a supergroup?

Glen Benton from Deicide and Erik Rutan from Hate Eternal played in Vital Remains, I think that could count as a metal supergroup.

In my opinion a supergroup is only when the band has been formed by members of already established popular bands.

Yes, I was going to mention Vltimas. Their album was really good.
