Post your favorite solos 2000-onwards (hint, i dont really listen to "popular" metal bands, just because i am afraid of going into big discographies)

So,
Meshuggah - Strawds pulled at random
Meshuggah - Entrapment
Meshuggah - Ligature marks
Deathspell Omega - The crackled book of life
Joe Satriani - Unstoppable momentum
Tony Iommi - Meat

Oh yea and bass solos count too

A lot of the solos off Scythian's Hubris in Excelsis are excellent, and rather unexpectedly melodic in character given how absolutely vicious that album is. The notes are just interesting on their own, cool little consonant, sometimes deliriously playful patterns that are catchy as hell. These solos usually set up a neat contrast against the backdrop of the utterly unrelenting assault of the preceding and subsequent sections, at least for a little while. There are also solos more akin to the Kerry King school of thought, which aren't shabby at all.
I'd say that those on "Beyond the Dust" and the title track are favorites of mine, though basically all solos on the album are fun and engaging, and the band does all sorts of cool things with them (like syncing up with the main riff theme, and trailing off it afterwards).

The solo on Winter Madness by Wintersun is sort of the modern(ish) Tornado of Souls solo for me. Similar to Tornado of Souls, it is extremely technical but it's so beautiful and it flows so smoothly that you kinda don't notice how technical it is. That's really difficult to pull off imo.

Iirc, the solo on Watain's "Waters of Ain" received quite a bit of praise when "Lawless darkness" was released.

Yeah, this would have been one of my first mentions. There's a lot of Bodom solos (both guitar and keyboard) that could be mentioned, especially between 2000-2005. Follow the Reaper, Everytime I Die, Needled 24/7, Chokehold, Bodom Beach Terror, Knuckleduster... the list goes on and on. I Worship Chaos has some cool stuff too - I'm a big fan of Alexi's solo in Morrgian, and the guitar / key duel at the end of one of the slower songs (forget which one it is).

Sentenced - End of the Road
Miika Tenkula always brought a lot of emotion to his leads. He really knocked it out of the park with this one, and considering it was the final song on his final album makes it extra poignant.

Kreator - The Ancient Plague / Demon Prince
I love Sami's style of play, and what he's brought to the band. His solos at the end of these two songs have always stuck out - really effective at closing out the mini epics they sort of are.

Iron Maiden - Blood Brothers
Janick's solo just before the final chorus. It's a bit of a variation on the main melody but it works really well in building up to the last refrains.

Kalmah - They Will Return
There's a fast solo at the start, and a slower one in the middle. Both are sublime.

Edguy - too many to mention
There's loads. Big fan of Jens Ludwig (and Dirk when he chips in). I really miss their playing in Tobi's songs. I've got Tears of a Mandrake on at the moment, and the leads are brilliant.

Also a shout out to a few non metal examples - Buckethead in Guns n' Roses' There was a Time (God tier solo), and Ryan Roxie (I think) in Alice Cooper's Six Hours (awesome way to close the song).

That song is from an album released in 1999.

My favourite BY FAR is "The Dead Of Night" by Walpyrgus:

Whole song is incredible, but that Thin Lizzy-worshipping solo that starts around 3:01 that then transforms into something Helloween would write just drives me crazy.

Pretty much any of the ones on Seasons of the Wolf's Once in a Blue Moon have to be up there. And Slough Feg's Hardworlder. Beautiful 70s bliss.

Some great mentions here. Having fun checking out new recs and reviewing some of my favorites. My preferred style is more the long epic slow evil crawling solos you can sink your teeth into and less so the super technical guitar wankery types that sacrifice composition for technique.

In no particular order and just solo's that I have always enjoyed and that I can recall in this moment as standouts:

Sabbat - The Answer is Hell
Sabbat - Black Magical Circle of Witches. uff, Temis Osmond, uff. This guy wasn't too much. He was three much.
Sabbat - Witch Hammers. Two amazing bass solo's right here. Gezol, you beast!

Manilla Road - March of the Gods intro solo.
Manilla Road - Born Upon the Soul. Yup...this is it. this is the one. hits every spot. My man had style RIP :(

Jag Panzer - Hell to Pay
Jag Panzer - Take to the Sky. Damn, Chris Broderick could play.

The Gates of Slumber - Castle of the Devil. all time winner in the category of "best non metal solo in a metal song"

Destroyer666 - Through the Broken Pentagram. as much shit as this band gets these days, I think they got everything right on this song, especially the mix. Sinister lead melodies everywhere!

Notable mentions:
Adrian Smith doesn't do long 1 min plus solos but some of his recent stuff with Maiden is just so distinctively "Adrian Smith" e.g. second outro solo on Book of Souls and second solo on Hell on Earth. If songs had thumbnails his solos would be it.
Ashok (ex-Root)- This is low key one of my all time favorite lead guitarists. Its like if Steve Vai joined a metal band and slowed it down. Just check out his work in the early 2000's on 'Root - The Black Seal' and 'Equirhodont - Equirhodont Grandiose Magus"

I have a soft spot for the epic-length solo in The Storm Still Rages Inside from Orphaned Land. It's such a beautifully expressive lead that goes on for nearly 5 minutes, ebbing and flowing with the rest of the music perfectly, and reprises a lot of the main melodies throughout the album. There are a few spicy notes that keep it feeling unpredictable and human as well.

Pretty awesome to hear someone mention Orphaned Land. I'm not entirely versed in their music but have heard some and liked what I've heard.

I'm going to cheat, even though the original came out in 1998 they re recorded it in 2015, both are good but I do prefer the original. But Exhumed's "Casketcrusher" has one of my favorite solos all time.

I usually don't like Deicide much but that entire middle section of the song with the melodic tremolo picking is maybe one of the best compositions in death metal ever. Great solo too.

yeah, yeah, i don't really care that it was originally released in the second half of 1999, this album defined a lot of post 2000 death metal and solo on Advanced Corpse Tumor is the solo. ov all time.

Practically every Drudkh guitar solo in the 2000s catalog, and even the solo on Towards The Light from Handful Of Stars is pretty tasteful too. But if I had to name specific songs, I'd mention Wind Of The Night Forests, Skies At Our Feet, Only The Wind Remembers My Name, Everything Unsaid Before, and the entire fucking Blood In Our Wells album.

Oh fuck. I'm not sure if I'd name these solos as the best post-2000 (though they are damn good), but I'd be hard pressed to agree with that statement. Absolutely fucking relentless. I seriously fell out of the loop with that band and miss Goremageddon-era Aborted

The title track on The Hunter by Mastodon has like three or four unhinged solos by Brent Hinds that are only made even more emotional when you know the context.
