no it's based far more in hardcore and skramz.

but if you like it bands like Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, Red Rocket Fiasco, The Great Redneck Hope all sorta get this terminology.

but overall it's not a heavy metal genre some bands might get closer to metal sounding but that's just band by band circumstances.

If it uses predominantly metal riffing/elements then it can be considered as such, I guess. M-A does have a couple bands tagged as "mathcore", though many of them such as The Human Abstract seem to fall more under the progressive metalcore umbrella during their less chaotic moments (like say Between the Buried and Me, especially their later stuff) or tech death (Vampire Squid) in my opinion.

I suppose a "true" mathcore band would be more something like The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza (Danza II: The Electric Boogaloo is my personal favorite of theirs) or Dillinger Escape Plan. Not exactly my cup of tea personally, but it can be fun once in a while, say you're at the gym and need something to drown out noise.

Some bands are, but most aren't. Not a diss though, I really dig a lot of them.

Dillinger Escape Plan is the obvious recommendation for mathcore. The Callous Daoboys and Mouthbreather are also solid. And while not mathcore, Zao is a pretty great metalcore group.
