I recently came across this independent record label and I noticed that a lot of new good death metal bands that I listened to thanks in part to the Metal Archives are from there. Pretty cool stuff like Fulci, 200 Stab Wounds, Vomit Forth, Gates to Hell, Tribal Gaze, and others. I wanted to know what you guys think about the roster of bands that the label has and your opinion on the music that these bands make.

In my opinion, it's pretty cool to have a death metal only label, It reminds me of stuff like Earache Records and the bands here are pretty good, they mix new and old school sounds, with a little bit of hardcore, brutal death, old school death all with a good quality sound and an interesting creative output but at the same time paying their respects to the classics of the genre.

To me it's like most of these bands sound fine upon first listen but a lot of it feels like death metal stripped of most of what makes death metal good. It just gets dull when all the bands focus on slams and never venturing past the first handful of frets. I want unpredictable songwriting, that instinctually catchy but off-kilter riffing that made the early bands stand out from thrash, leads, harmonies, changes and keys and tempos, dark atmosphere... I wish we had more bands taking cues from Skeletal Remains or Necrot when it comes to the current scene.

I discovered that thread after I wrote this one, but since it didn't have much traction I kept it.

It died because there's much more to say. They had a huge hand in the OSDM revival a few years back, now they're a shell of their former selves shilling crappy caveman slam without much interest.

There are probably 100 labels doing similar, but better, stuff right now. Check out Satanik Royalty, Transylvania, Frozen Screams, Everlasting Spew, Life After Death, Headsplit, Gurgling Gore, Rotted Life, and Caligari for underground death metal labels with a higher bar for quality.

I really don't agree with the majority of the thread's comments. I like all kinds of heavy music, I really love hardcore and metal. Maybe the mix between the two styles still remains a controversial aspect of modern metal music, It's getting kind of old to think that (reminds me of the anti-metalcore/deathcore oldheads of the 2010s), to be honest. But I don't really get the distaste for these bands, they are mostly new, trying to expand death metal to a new generation. I like the classics, but I will always support whatever new styles and scenes are created, I have a deep love for death metal, and seeing new bands trying to mix the old-school style, with beatdown hardcore and other genres is a breath of fresh air for the genre.

i just can't think of any reason why i'd listen to those bands when there are plenty of other new death metal groups making way better music. i mean if you like the label then more power to you, they're extremely popular rn so obviously this stuff is resonating with some people for whatever reason.

my main issue with them isn't that they have hardcore influence either, it's that they're just boring to me. then again i don't like most osdm-revival anyway

This is a kinda weird thing to praise. Specializing in death metal doesn't make the label any more attractive to me than stuff I can listen to from more mixed labels that I wound up enjoying more like Profound Lore, Dark Descent, 20 Buck Spin, or Sepulchral Voice.

A lot of their stuff is pretty boring to me but Mortal Wound, Gutless, and Disembowel are all great. And Fulci has been one of my favorite bands for the past few years. I got to see them last week in San Diego and they put on an incredible show.

Sounds like they're trying too hard to imply that "we don't like Slipknot, yo".

Most of the good bands on Maggot Stomp have moved on to other labels, their roster right now is pretty threadbare.
