Fellas, ladies, and enbies, it's that time again! For the seventh straight year, the upwards trajectory has continued and we've smashed some more records. The mid-year polls always crush in terms of pure numbers because the pool of eligibility is always much wider, but even taking those into account we have the most total ballots of all time with 278, and the second highest number of unique albums with 842 (which is still behind the lip-flapping insane 979 from the 2000s poll). There's a lot to talk about but I'll save that for the back half, because I know what you're here for. This is!

***DISCLAIMER*** Like the last few years, I'm only going to be inputting the Meshuggah tabs alongside the top ten to showcase the vote distribution instead of the for the entire list. It just takes an outrageous amount of time to do that for all of them so I don't bother anymore. But of course, this also means that I now just post the spreadsheet I used all month so y'all can just see inside the sausage casing yourselves. So enjoy, here is the read-only link to the whole damn spreadsheet itself. Have at it!

And so, after another record of three hundred and sixty eight non-randos, our eighth winner for Encyclopaedia Metallum Album of the Year goes to Dødheimsgard with this decade's album Black Medium Current! This one is fun for me because, for I think the first time ever, I know jack fuckin' nothing about the band that won a poll! Somehow DHG just kinda slipped past me and I never even got around to checking this one out (nor have I heard A Umbra Omega or 666 International after both albums did well in their respective decade poll), so I can't even make an offhand comment about what kind of music they even make because having "avant-garde" in their genre means they could basically sound like anything. But the fact that they've made so many appearances on these lists in the mid-year polls means they've been around for a long time, release an album once per generation, and somehow always land with a knockout, and 2023 was no exception. So I'm pleased to extend a huge congratulations to the Norwegian cult legends on this hard fought victory and the highest point total in a year-end poll to date with 602, a full hundo over last year's winner and 76 over the previous record holder, Ulcerate, and their final score of 526!

And now for something completely the same, all those lonely souls who wound up with only one vote throughout the month. Great albums nonetheless, but still shuttled off to the side to make the list readable. I give you:

BH's Final Thoughts
This was a very fun year and a very tough one to predict. DHG won pretty decisively in the end, and as the notes on the spreadsheet point out, passed every hundred point threshold first besides the 100 point barrier (which went to Dying Fetus). So they got ahead and stayed ahead, but for the most part Hellripper and Malokarpatan really kept on their heels for a good chunk of the time. Really though, what's most interesting about their victory is exactly how they achieved it. If you look at the point spread, you'll see that a huge majority of their points came from 1st and 2nd place placements. They actually had fewer total votes than both Hellripper and Malo, mirroring a similar situation in 2020 when The Ruins of Beverast pulled out a win despite nabbing fewer votes than Spectral Wound in 2nd place. In fact, if they had ONLY gotten those 12 first place votes, they'd have landed in 13th with 300 points, and if you include the second place votes as well they'd be #4. The strength of those high placements carried them across the finish line. I can anticipate and even understand the argument for why this is a bad thing, but I think weighing quality along with popularity is important for exactly this reason. DHG has proven here exactly what it means to be a cult classic, because comparatively fewer people seemed to hear them, but a majority of people who did and liked it at all considered it one of the absolute best albums they'd heard all year. That, to me, is both more valuable and more representative of what "The Best" album truly is.

There were a few other fun things I watched unfold. Overkill stayed pretty high up the whole time but didn't make it into the top ten until the last few ballots, while Horrendous did the opposite, hanging on to the bottom half of top ten all month and just barely squirted out at the last minute, missing their chance to repeat a top ten performance. Oromet exclusively had first place votes for most of the month until the last few days, and Tetragrammacide had the opposite and had exclusively tenth place votes until near the end. I don't remember if this is the first year where the entire top ten landed over 300 points but that's a cool detail if it is.

There are always booby prizes, but they're a lot harder to come up with as the poll gets more popular each year. For example our Rando Calrissian Award for "Highest placement with no first place votes" this year goes to Enslaved - Heimdal, but they're all the way down in the 27th slot, which is much less interesting than something like 2017 where Immolation managed to get second place with that accolade. I used to do the Beltre Award for "earning at least one vote in all ten spots" but four-fuckin'-teen albums got it this year so it's totally meaningless now. I also did the At Least Somebody Likes Milhouse Award for "lowest placement with at least one first place vote" but that's a five way tie this year. So who knows, maybe I'll be able to think of more fun imaginary awards to give out in the future, but as it stands, a lot of them are much less special now that participation has shot through the roof. I dunno, make up your own!

(As for the question from the other thread, the correct answer for #28 was Cruel Force - Dawn of the Axe. KaiKasparek and irishpip were the closest with their guesses, both being two off in either direction, but I'm gonna give the win to Kai because the last time I did this game he also won by being only two off from the correct answer. Dude's got a knack for being Almost Right!)

And that's all for this year! Thank you all so much once again. I love this community and these polls are fantastic way for us to get together and celebrate the obnoxious music we all love so much. Let's now use this thread for discussion, list sharing, slapfights, and commiseration!

Also be sure to tell me where I fucked up in Rando Corner because I always, always do!

25. Trichomoniasis - Makeshift Crematoria (270th)

And of course, the collage:

Spoiler: show

Looking at it, this is probably the most obscure list I've ever made for MA's year-end poll - still not obscure by any means, but definitely a lot more so than my previous lists. Looking at either the top 10 or top 25, none of MA's top 10 lands on my list. I think I have more unranked albums in the 11 - 25 portion than in any year previous, as well as albums in the 100 - 300 range; hell my #1 metal album of the year only came 191st, which is definitely the lowest any of my #1s have placed in these polls. I don't really have much to say here, it's just interesting to note.

And with that, another year is done; and man there was a lot of great metal released this past year. I originally had a longer list planned but had to ditch it; and still now a part of me keeps thinking I should add more albums to the list. With that said, in doing all that listening a clear top tier - in this case, the top half roughly, as I had 57 albums ranked at that point - had emerged, and after some final adjustments I got this top 25 I'm very happy with.

And as ever, my biggest thanks to BH for running these every year! It's always a fun time to see how it all plays out, and it also gets me listening to more stuff - I've found some amazing things just through my listening for these polls.
All we love, we leave behind.

Woo Hoo

Let's see how my results stacked up

1. Sacred Outcry - Towers of Gold (6)
2. Wytch Hazel - IV: Sacrament (31)
3. Heavy Load - Riders of the Ancient Storm (98)
4. Malokarpatan - Vertumnus Caesar (3)
5. Cruel Force - Dawn of the Axe (28)
6. Helms Deep - Treacherous Ways (64)
7. Sorcerer - Reign of the Reaper (65)
8. Cirith Ungol - Dark Parade (9)
9. Destructor - Blood, Bone, and Fire (Rando)
10. Triumpher - Storming the Walls (43)

All top 100 except for 1 in the Rando. Think maybe if it came our earlier in the year it would have a few more votes. All in all a great year for metal and I can't wait to listen to some of the others on the list.

Thanks for all the hard work BastardHead again.

Well my impression that you might win with like 350 points this year was wrong haha.

Anyhoo, checking my performance:

1. Nithing - Agonal Hymns #19
2. Trichomoniasis - Makeshift Crematoria #270
3. Dead And Dripping - Blackened Cerebral Rifts #118
4. Ὁπλίτης (Hoplites) - Τρωθησομένη #120
5. Undergang - De syv stadier af fordærv #228
6. Desekryptor - Vortex Oblivion Rando
7. Impetuous Ritual - Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis #185
8. Khanate - To Be Cruel #132
9. Arnaut Pavle - Transylvanian Glare #114
10. Tetragrammacide - Typho-Tantric Aphorisms From the Arachneophidian Qur'an #225

Well shit, this was my kvltest year ever. ONE album in the top 100, which only made it to 19. The totals may have been higher than I picked but the breadth I predicted was there.

As for the 10 that made it, I've only heard half of them so clearly I'm off the pulse here. My disagreement is reflected here with none of that 10 cracking my own top hundred. DHG sucked ass, hadn't heard of it before December so I'm stunned to see it cracked the 600 (Personal #322). Hellripper was alright and was my pre-poll prediction, so I was close there at least (Personal #203). Malokarpatan just ain't my jam, that heavy/black thing never does it for me, and adding a mountain of prog rock didn't enhance it, still fine enough I guess (personal #220). Dying Fetus was solid legacy filler (personal #124). Cirith Ungol keep doing one song over and over, I need some frenzied attack tunes to break up the endless midpaced epics (personal #187).

I would have been so pissed if Frozen Crown got rando'd. Thank you to whoever voted it in 4th on the other ballot. The silent majority does NOT give a shit about that band anymore. :(

Also LOL at Lovebites beating RYM favorite King Gizzard and Metallica. (I was close dammit!) Edit: HOLY SHIT I WON ANYWAY!

Edit 2: Thanks for all your hard work on this BH!

Alright! Time to post my official list:

Top 10 Albums of 2023:

1. Marc Hudson - Starbound Stories (#214)
Ah, cheese. Sweet, delicious cheese. In this miserable, no-good, downright awful year that made me want to quit pretending that happiness is even possible for me, I needed this wedge of tasty cheese to at least help keep my head above water. Bizarre how the title track is the weakest track by far, though. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Freedom Heart," "Call of the Martyrs," and "The Siren"

2. Lovebites - Judgement Day (#30)
This is probably my 2nd favorite Lovebites album, after Clockwork Immortality. I love me some hooky melodies, and they were here in spades, despite being conspicuously absent on Electric Pentagram. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "My Orion," "Wicked Witch," and "Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'Em Down)"

3. Overkill - Scorched (#10)
Pre-1991 Overkill does nothing for me. 2010-onwards Overkill is my favorite thrash metal band of all time. You'd think a veteran band like this would slow down and start dipping in quality by this point, but they just haven't. They just keep kicking ass. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "The Surgeon," "Scorched," and "Know Her Name"

4. Blood Star - First Sighting (#18)
I might just not be as in-touch with the scene as I used to be, but these guys feel like they came outta nowhere, and boy am I glad they did, because this is the retro-80s-throwback band I've been waiting for. Everything about them is just so fresh and exciting, despite their sound being so familiar. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "All For Nothing," "Going Home," and "Cold Moon"

5. Iron Savior - Firestar (#71)
It is an Iron Savior album. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Rising From Ashes," "In the Realm of Heavy Metal," and "Firestar"

6. Theocracy - Mosaic (#39)
Ghost Ship was a bit of a disappointment, so it's nice that these past 7 years of inactivity have resulted in a fantastic comeback album for them. Extremely memorable and enjoyable all-around, and it's obvious that time and care went into its creation. Which is why it's so good. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Liar, Fool, or Messiah," "Flicker," and "Mosaic"

7. Metal Church - Congregation of Annihilation (#77)
I like Metal Church's first two albums, but after that, they completely fell off a cliff for me. It was only on a whim that I gave this album a shot, and hot damn! I was not expecting anything nearly this good! Well, you know what they say about assumptions--you made an ass out of you and umptions. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Congregation of Annihilation," "Another Judgement Day," and "Say a Prayer with 7 Bullets"

8. Metallica - 72 Seasons (#53)
Speaking of surprises, I had expected Hardwired to be the last gasp of quality writing to ever be squeezed out of the tired, battered udder that is Metallica, but it seems like they're in the midst of a second wind of sorts. Another veteran act that put out a shockingly consistent, high-quality album. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Inamorata," "Shadows Follow," and "Lux Aeterna"

9. Serenity - Nemesis AD (#357)
After the disappointment that was The Last Knight, I was expecting Serenity to be on their way out, but nope! They bounced right back. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "The Fall of Man," "Reflections (of AD)," and "Ritter, Tod und Teufel (Knightfall)"

10. Xandria - The Wonders Still Awaiting (#192)
It's strange. I keep forgetting that Xandria have been excellent since 2012, largely because their music before then has always been so flat and forgettable. So a new album comes out, my expectations are way too low, and then I'm shocked at how much I enjoy it. You'd think I'd have learned by now to expect good things. Funny how that happens.
Top Three Tracks: "Your Stories I'll Remember," "Reborn," and "The Wonders Still Awaiting"

Runner Ups:
Ascension - Under the Veil of Madness (Top Track: "Monsters")
Beyond the Black - Beyond the Black (Top Track: "Winter is Coming")
Angra - Cycles of Pain (Top Track: "Ride Into the Storm")
Derdian - New Era Part IV (Top Track: "Dorian")
Fifth Angel - When Angels Kill (Top Track: "Blinded and Bleeding")

Totally Should Count as 2023 Release:
EYE - Graffiti (Top Track: "Bye Bye")

Best Songs From Albums That Didn't Make the Top 10 or Runner Ups Lists:
"Twilight Force" (from Twilight Force - At the Heart of Wintervale)
"Eternal Fire" (from Kerrigan - Bloodmoon)
"The Phoenix Died (Remember)" (from Winterstorm - Everfrost)
"Midnight Fyre" (from Skull & Crossbones - Sungazer)
"Fire in the Sky" (from Frozen Crown - Call of the North)
I've written a fantasy novel. It's 145,000 157,586 184,899 words long!
It's also going to be the first part of a trilogy!

Alright, let's see where my list stands...

1. Legion of the Damned - The Poison Chalice (168)
2. Vastum - Inward to Gethsemane (158)
3. Dozer - Drifting in the Endless Void (291)
4. Enslaved - Heimdal (27)
5. Insomnium - Anno 1696 (22)
6. Overkill - Scorched (10 - the highest rank from my list)
7. Thron - Dust (229)
8. Bodyfarm - Ultimate Abomination (rando!)
9. Impetuous Ritual - Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis (185)
10. Aphotic - Abyssgazer (274)

Highest album on the official rankings that I listened to:
Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags [ended up just within my personal top 25]

Highest album on my personal 2023 listening tracker that didn't receive a vote, even as a rando:
Omicida - Sacrifice the Bastard Son [great thrash metal]

I could go through the rest of my list to see what didn't get a vote like I did a year ago, but I listened to so much more this past year, and I don't feel like searching all of it and posting about it. Though I was still curious about a couple of brutal death albums I would say are easily better than that Nithing album, and neither got a vote. They were Ophiocordyceps - Anthropocene and Internal Suffering - Rituals.

2023 non-metal album shoutouts:
Foo Fighters - But Here We Are
The Hives - The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons
Electric Six - Turquoise

Probably have a few more observations I could make, but no one would care anyway. Here's to 2024 and the music it will bring.

Thanks BastardHead! Great work once again.

I didn't even get to hear all the ones I wanted to hear this year, like Gorod, Runemagick, Phobocosm, Gotsu Totsu Kotsu, Urfaust, and others. No reason, just never got to them. Never mind. From what I did hear, here's my top 20:

1. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite (#4)
Definitely my AOTY. I feel like the band just upped their game in all facets to create an album dripping with aggression, great riffs, incredible vocals, and mournful lyrics. I generally don’t pay the most attention to lyrics, but they’re simply fantastic here, in a masochistic way. This is most likely their best album, and with it being this far into their career, it’ll be awesome to see what comes next. For the time being, though, this is the best album I’ve heard this year.

2. The Zenith Passage - Datalysium (#58)
I love the syncopation and heavy helpings of tech/groove on offer here. Super catchy and fun to listen to. It took a while to warm up to the two last songs, but now that I have, I can safely say this album is a complete banger from start to finish. I love tech-death and this delivers what I like in spades.

3. Florid Ekstasis - Trepanning (rando)
This album is a weird and wild ride. Easy contender for best experimental death metal album of the year. The music is completely off-kilter and when it feels like it’s all crumbling down, they pick it right back up again. The 22-minute track is the centrepiece here, but all 4 tracks bring something awesome and will keep you guessing.

4. Parity Boot - Fast Forward (rando)
Huge surprise for me. This is some wonderfully crafted melodic industrial metal. The cleans are great, the hooks are even better, and each song will be etched in your mind long after the album ends. Highly recommended.

5. Turbid North - The Decline (#246)
This album is basically death/grindcore/groove, but is much more than the sum of its parts. It takes 2 tracks to really get into the album, but that melodic opener is just spine-tingling. I love the 8 minute instrumental track, how it can change from groove to grindcore on a dime, and how the melodies are seamlessly interwoven. I haven’t heard their older material, but this one is super unique in how it’s presented that it kept me coming back over and over through the year.

6. Aeffect - Theory of Mind (rando)
In a year without Meshuggah, this is a great substitute, but at the same time they are doing their own thing. Massive downtuned riffs with death metal vocals. The band knows when to add blasts, but also when to add atmospheric sections. Their mix of djent, groove, and death metal make this one a winner, since I’m a big fan of all those things. Not too shabby for a debut album.

7. Dyoxidon - The Decaying Multiverse (rando)
I love industrial elements in my music, and this one has that in spades. Beyond that, this album is dense. It’s unrelenting, dark, and pummeling to the point that you’ll be gasping for air by the end of it. Deathened, blackened, industrialised goodness, thicker than peanut butter, and utterly captivating.

8. Molested Divinity - The Primordial (rando)
On paper, this band shouldn’t be in the top 10, but something about this brand of brutal death metal just resonates with me. It’s unrelenting, but the way they’ve done it for three straight albums clicks for me. It’s one I’ve kept coming back to this year and one I’ll continue to come back to in years to come.

9. Sovereign - Rewired (rando)
Apart from the final track, which has vocals, this is basically instrumental sci-fi cyber metal. I don’t care how robotic or plastic it sounds, but I love it. Listening to this makes me feel like I’m in the future. Whether that future is The Jetsons or Cyberpunk is up to the individual. Nevertheless, I’m a huge sucker for industrial sounds and this one hits a specific spot for me that keeps me coming back.

10. Paroxysm Unit - Fragmentation // Stratagem (rando)
After the disappointing 7 H. Target album, this one basically fills that void with supremely off-kilter slam-but-not-too-much-slam death metal. It’s chaotic, noisy, but a whole lot of fun, basically demanding repeated listens.

11. S.U.P. - Octa
Love everything this band has done, and this is no exception. Great avant-garde metal with varied vocals and interesting musicianship.

12. Neurectomy - Overwrought
Killer technical death metal with John Longstreth of Origin fame drumming. Awesome riffs and songwriting.

13. Extermination Dismemberment - Extinction Protocol
I loved their last album and had to wait a while for this one. The bass drops are back and it’s just as good, if not better.

14. Cause n Effect - Validation Through Suffering
More tech-death, and this one kind of came out of nowhere. Has the songwriting chops to keep up with their more experienced peers. An up-and-coming band to keep an eye on.

15. Wothrosch - Odium
Death/black metal. Doesn’t go all out with speed, but makes up for it with interesting songwriting. Another band to keep an eye on.

16. Ophiocordyceps - Anthropocene
Utterly unrelenting, but retains my interest throughout.

17. The Last Eon - Infernal Fractality
My love of industrial continues. This time industrial black metal, where great vocals combine with pounding beats and interesting songwriting.

18. Cryptopsy - As Gomorrah Burns
Another great comeback. Maybe not quite as good as their self-titled, but still packs quite a punch, and contains their brand of schizophrenic death metal.

19. Somnium de Lycoris - In the Failing Hours
Great debut album from another band that should be talked about among the giants of tech-death.

20. Godflesh - Purge
Still got it this far into their career. Rivals their best albums of decades past, in my opinion.

Honourable mentions:

Baring Teeth - The Path Narrows
Blindfolded and Led to the Woods - Rejecting Obliteration
Blut Aus Nord - Disharmonium - Nahab
Djinn-Ghul - Opulence
Hasard - Malivore
Mithridatum - Harrowing
Nightmarer - Deformity Adrift
Nithing - Agonal Hymns
Suffocation - Hymns from the Apocrypha
Tyrant of Death - Nuclear Nanosecond Remastered
Ulthar - Anthronomicon/Helionomicon
Whalesong - Leaving a Dream
Ὁπλίτης (Hoplites) - Ψευδομένη
Ὁπλίτης (Hoplites) - Τρωθησομένη

Fuck yeah, Make Them Beg for Death came at #5 along with Cattle Decap the two best death metal albums of the year by far, sad to see Suffocation didn't make the top ten.

Strange year, despite planning to be more selective I listened to 330 albums and enjoyed so many I had a shortlist of 75. Unsurprisingly I didn't fully get through it in making the list, but am happy enough with the result. The weirdest part is it contains a whole bunch of non-extreme albums, and the top two are bordering on pop.

  1. Angus McSix - Angus McSix and the Sword of Power (96) Would never have thought something like this would be my #1. Pure, catchy fun (the video clips really add to the experience). Dance-inflected power with no duds and Thomas' amazing voice. The bonus track is possibly the best. My kids absolutely love this which I choose to interpret as a good thing.
  2. Beyond the Black - Beyond the Black (145) More pop-influenced, catchy metal that fails to suck. Jennifer's voice is equivalent to Thomas' - rich and full where most of their power metal colleagues sound strong but have a thinness that gets on my nerves.
  3. Lovebites - Judgement Day (30) They still have the wrong vocalist for the style but somehow dialed the intensity up from previous efforts.
  4. Wytch Hazel - IV: Sacrament (31) More mature songwriting. I'll still always prefer III as my first exposure but this is really well-crafted.
  5. Helleruin - Devils, Death and Dark Arts (93) Love the variety of the interludes. Sadly got removed from Bandcamp.
  6. Leiþa - Reue (194) Some elements, like the crusty vocals, seem wrong on the surface but it builds underneath to greatness.
  7. Bizarrekult - Den tapte krigen (rando ~633) Nicely written and uniquely-voiced, beautifully mixes black and post.
  8. Blood Star - First Sighting (18) Musically simple but simply excellent (except the middle track where the guitarist does vocals).
  9. Demoniac - Nube Negra (13) Slightly more polished and progressive than So it Goes.
  10. Уводь - Пламенем прошлого (rando ~804) Not necessarily original but reminds me of a blend of one of my favourite bands, Algaion, and Drudkh (also a Mgła influence in there).

Average placement (kvlt index): 206 (77 without randos)

Congratulations to Dødheimsgard taking out the poll, was certainly on the shortlist.

Disappointment 1: Gotsu Totsu Kotsu releasing an album in the last days with no time to listen to it. The Final Stand is still a regular listen for me.
Disappointment 2: New Trisophere album MIA (supposedly mostly done in Oct 2022, then silence).

I fell way behind in my new album search again so my list will probably change when I post on my blog, but Here was the top 10 I voted for.

1. "Suicidal Self Harm" Lugubrious Cult - Sorry to see this ended up in rando corner. In spite of the generic title for a DSBM band, its an excellent album.
2. “We Don't Rise We Just Fall” Firmament
3. “Threatening Skies” Goat Explosion
4. “IV: Sacrament” Wytch Hazel
5. "Golden Arm" Haunt
6. "Treacherous Ways" Helms Deep
7. "The Grateful Undead" Druid Stone - Another in Rando, but this one is expected. Obscure band and I didn't like any of their other albums I listened to, but this one people should really check out.
8. "Follow the Cold Path" Autrest
9. "色即是空"("Shiki Soku Ze Kuu") 人間椅子 ( Ningen-Isu)
10. "The Coral Tombs" Ahab

My top 10 was:
1) Sacred Outcry - Towers of Gold (6)
2) Finsterforst - Jenseits (147)
3) Fires in the Distance - Air Not Meant for Us (68)
4) Katatonia - Sky Void of Stars (24)
5) Riverside - ID.Entity (131)
6) Gatekeeper - From Western Shores (47)
7) Viikate - Askel (X)
8) Lalu - The Fish Who Wanted to Be King (X)
9) Eclipse - Megalomania (X)
10) Ne Obliviscaris - Exul (88)

I have at least a couple comments to make:

1. I made a tournament bracket featuring my Top 10 Albums for each month, and did single elimination for the first two rounds. I had DHG beat Aara the opening round, but lost to Sacred Outcry in the second round.

2. You're the man now, dog!
I found a bunch of metal that played a huge role in forming my taste in music on YTMND, like Moonsorrow, Ensiferum, DragonForce, and Lost Horizon. Sacred Outcry making it to the Hall of Fame is special, particularly because it features the voice of a hilarious meme that came from YTMND, so I am forever grateful to that site.

3. Honorable mentions:
The Enigma Division is worth mentioning for releasing my favorite debut, since there aren't any on my ballot.
Haken, Stam1na, Scar Symmetry, and Klone each get an honorable mention as well.

A lot of albums (1689 this year) have been listened to, and I wanted to find ways to keep more in mind of what I run into, and I think it paid off. Congratulations to DHG on this victory, thank you BH for your work in this, and thank you any new and returning voters for your ballots this year.

Nice. Welp, here's the top 10 I ended up submitting.

10. Therion - Leviathan III
I've actually quite enjoyed this "Leviathan" trilogy. It seems to be slightly polarizing, though not nearly as polarizing as "Beloved Antichrist" (which was indeed dull as dishwater). Personally though, I thought most of these songs were pretty fun. The first part is still the best one, though I think this one's in second place (I really like II as well though). These albums were essentially fanservice and as a massive fan of this band (aside from one or two albums), that's okay with me.

09. Serenity - Nemesis AD
Such vibrant, strong and catchy melodies. I liked "Lionheart" and "The Last Knight", but these songs are just better written - more on par with "War of Ages" and "Death & Legacy". If you're disappointed in the latest Kamelot album, I suggest giving this a go instead - it's very similar to what they were doing in the early 00s, though it has its own quirks.

08. Immortal - War Against All
Much like the last album, this is simply Immortal being Immortal and that's okay. Not much else to say except I think it's fun and cool (or maybe grim (and frostbitten)). Yes, it's essentially a Demonaz solo album, but whatever.

07. Twilight Force - At the Heart of Wintervale
What I like about these guys is that they turn every power metal trope up to 11 without coming off as a jokey meme band (like the godawful Victorius). They just genuinely love this kind of music and it shines through in what they do. Also, "Skyknights of Aldaria" might be my favorite song they've done so far.

06. Cruciamentum - Obsidian Refractions
Now for something much darker... I'll admit I wasn't too familiar with this band until hearing this album - I'd heard some songs here and there, but this one convinced me to dig deeper into their music. Just utterly fantastic death metal through and through, really. Great atmosphere, fantastic riffs.

05. Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific
I mean, it's Cannibal Corpse - you know what you're going to get. They have a particular sound that they're very good at. Not much else to say except this rules.

04. Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle
Reminds me of late 90s Children of Bodom, but with more black metal influence. Fast-paced and aggressive but with richly melodic (and catchy!) guitar work. Black metal and power metal can indeed work together quite well, this is proof of it. Nice to see it in the top overall top 10.

03. Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg for Death
"Wrong One to Fuck With" was good, but a bit overly long. I could feel it drag as I was listening to it. This one absolutely doesn't have that problem - they cut the fat and delivered some excellent brutal death metal. There are slams, but they aren't over done. There's some technical riffing, but it isn't overdone. Everything is just right, basically. One of their absolute best albums. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually becomes my favorite thing they've done. We'll see. Not surprised to see this one in the overall top 10.

02. Sacred Outcry - Towers of Gold
This is a dense album, it takes some time to reveal itself to you. I wasn't entirely sure what the hype was all about when I first heard it, but after another spin it started clicking with me. Then I played it again... and again... and again... and kept playing it repeatedly throughout the year, lol. Some very strong power metal and easily the best power metal album of the year, no contest. I'm definitely glad it made it into the board's top 10 too.

01. Autopsy - Ashes, Organs, Blood and Crypts
I mean, it's fucking Autopsy. They usually do a pretty good job, barring "Shitfun" (never liked that one). Riffs that make you want to bang your head until your neck can't take it anymore and a sinister atmosphere... and a distinct sound that you just don't get from anyone else. I'm surprised they put out something so good barely a year after the last one... but hey, I'm pretty glad they did. If they can offer up something just as good as this in 2024, so be it.

Seems so. I loved The Fallen King but nothing since then has grabbed me in the same way. They've moved a bit towards a 'modern metal' sound and lost the catchiness. Will still automatically listen to anything they release though.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who contributed. I really enjoy reading the lists and discovering new music. There are certainly a number of albums in the top 100 I haven’t listened to yet, and even some bands that I’m not all that familiar with.

As far as my list, the ones I thought would do well did quite well (Tomb Mold, Marduk) in the end. I was expecting a lot of randos, but had only two in the end (Tulus, Moonreich). And one of those albums, Tulus, I saw on a couple of short lists. Other groups I chose had a reasonable showing as well (Suffocation). Although Incantation (101) was a bit lower. However, I think the reaction to that album was pretty mixed among the reviews I read.

As far as the surprises, I guess for me I didn’t expect that Overkill album to finish that high. I was thinking it would be around the 30-40 rank. I guess it was surprising that it beat out Tomb Mold for a top 10 place.

I also thought that a number of albums finished lower than I imagined. I was surprised to see Ahab (45), Xoth (41), and Kalmah (49) that low in the final poll.

In particular, I thought I would see the Angra (60) album much higher than it ended up. I thought it might be an album that people would galvanize around, a bit like Blind Guardian last year. It didn’t quite make my top 10, but I really liked that album and I’m not a huge power metal guy.

Do you member that time in 2021 when Maiden was voted #3 and cynics said it was just because they were a legacy band?

Let me see if I can find it here...

Ah! Here we are!

Well, if Maiden placed #3 due to their legacy, how do those folks esplain Metallica's poor showing at #53 this year?

Truth is, Senjutsu will likely go down as the best metal album of this century, and the Chives polling proves it.

1. Panopticon – The Rime Of Memory (8)
2. Warcrab – The Howling Silence (94)
3. The Anchoret – It All Began With Loneliness (245)
4. Hellripper – Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags (2)
5. Godthrymm – Distortions (38)
6. Alkaloid – Numen (126)
7. Cirith Ungol – Dark Parade (9)
8. Suffocation – Hymns From The Apocrypha (40)
9. Vastum – Inward To Gethsemane (158)
10. Dawn Ray’d – To Know The Light (263)

No randos baby. Cheers to BH as always!

Not mad at these results. It was really clear that Dødheimsgard would come first at some point and I'm genuinely impressed that Hellripper made it to 2nd place. Thank you for having good taste y'all.

I'm also impressed that MA still maintains their loyalty to Katatonia no matter how bland or forgettable the album :-P

As always, thanks a lot BH for all the work you put into this!

Also, and before I list my top 10 and their final ranking, I want to say I'm glad that Black Medium Current finished 1st overall. It's a great album, it totally deserves the 1st spot, and I also know it's going to piss off a few wannabe tough guys, and I can definitely live with that.

So here's my top 10:

1. Ahab - The Coral Tombs (45th)
2. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse (32nd)
3. Blackbraid - Blackbraid II (21st)
4. Ebony Pendant - Ebony Pendant (121st)
5. ...and Oceans - As in Gardens, So in Tombs (46th)
6. Frozen Soul - Glacial Domination (67th)
7. Kalmah - Kalmah (49th)
8. Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (8th)
9. Dødheimsgard - Black Medium Current (1st)
10. Sulphur Aeon - Seven Crowns and Seven Seals (20th)

I'm mostly happy with these results, and was actually positively surprised with Ahab landing at 45th. I was expecting it to finish lower. On the other hand, it's quite obvious that my 1st place vote made it rank something like 15+ positions higher than if I didn't. The other rankings are not all that suprising. Ebony Pendant didn't get rando'ed, which is neat, but I was also not expecting it to finish with a high ranking.

I'm also quite happy to see Panopticon's The Rime of Memory making it into the top 10! I ranked it 8th and it finished at 8th place :) Absolutely solid album, and I'm glad that it got to rank that high even if it was released late in the year (November) which could have really played against it.

I didn't come close to voting for an album that would have been a rando. I considered voting for Ignominy's Imminent Collapse, which is in the rando corner, but then it would not have been in the rando corner.

I also had Wolves in the Throne Room at 22nd, which seems to have gotten zero votes. And I've got to say, I'm quite suprised! I know it's just an EP, but still. I would have expected at least one person to vote for this one.

1) Solitary Sabred - Temple of the Serpent [156th]
Last year, a band I had never before heard of, Mirror, crept onto my list. This year I heard of another band, featuring the guitarist from Mirror, and it was one of the final albums I checked out in 2023. At first it did not grab me quite as much, but then it quickly rocketed to the top of my list. I get a lot of the same feelings listening to this album that I get from Mercyful Fate (not saying they sound exactly alike). And since Mercyful Fate is my favorite band ever...

2) Tyranex - Reasons for the Slaughter [167th]
This band is also a new one for me. Extremely catchy and intense thrash with over the top vocals that I absolutely love. I can see them not being for everyone, but in an age where it seems most thrash bands rely on stock death, blackened, or hardcore vocals, this was really refreshing.

3) Witches Hollow - Grimoire [Rando]
Yet another new discovery. Witches Hollow scratches a riffy black metal itch that few other bands can reach. I'm really not surprised this was random cornered though.

4) Aara - Triade III: Nyx [59th]
Aara play a very different and more atmospheric brand of black metal than my number 3 pick. This is the third album in a trilogy based on the gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer. As I've long loved the novel, I was excited about this trilogy from the first entry in 2021. The first two didn't quite make the final cut for me, although they came close. I'm glad that this one finally did.

5) Overkill - Scorched [10th]
Overkill is a band that can almost (ReliXIV and Immortalis being the only notable exceptions) do no wrong in my book. They've been on a hot streak for several albums, and this is in my opinion their best since Ironbound.

6) Autopsy - Ashes, Organs, Blood, and Crypts [26th]
This album was a bit of a surprise for me. I liked Autopsy's album from last year well enough, but with one coming out so soon on its heels, I did not expect to like it this much more. But man, every song on this hits hard for me. And I absolutely love the bass on this album.

7) Owlbear - Chaos To the Realm [124th]
This album is tons of fun! Every song is catchy as hell and makes me want to sing along over and over again.

8) Korgull the Exterminator - Built To Kill [Rando]
Second time for this band to make my top 10 for the year. Just like the previous Sharpen Your Spikes, Built To Kill is probably my favorite blackened thrash act. On some tracks you can hear the early Voivod influence which coupled with their special brand of intensity is what gives them that special something for me.

9) Spirit Possession - Of the Sign... [16th]
This is my introduction to Spirit Possession and I really dug their sound. They conjure up a vibe that really sounds like nobody else I know of, and I will have to check out their earlier work.

10) Eternal Evil - The Gates Beyond Mortality [366th]
I actually thought this one would get a few more votes than it did. I really enjoy the sense of melody they weave into their thrash, and this album moved around in position in my list quite a few times before settling in the last spot.

Runners Up

Yeah, I liked this one, too, but I just didn't hear it enough to give it a proper ranking. Not that it matters now, but I'll need to give it more listens to see how I go with it. But, despite that, I'm happy it ended up so high, too.

1 - Dodheimsgard "Black Medium Current" (1)
2 - Marduk "Momento Mori" (23)
3 - Faidra "Militant : Penitent : Triumphant" (81)
4 - Ruïm "Black Royal Spiritism - I. O Sino Da Igreja" (140)

It makes me very happy that DHG, symbolically, got what they deserve. That album is going to be a cult classic for the years to come. Can't wait to see them live this summer.

Well, if Maiden placed #3 due to their legacy, how do those folks esplain Metallica's poor showing at #53 this year?

Truth is, Senjutsu will likely go down as the best metal album of this century, and the Chives polling proves it.

You're stupid and annoying!

Why did you quote DemonFilth2001 referencing Bahana in your signature? Do you know who those folks are? Do you know where they come from?

Thank you for the hard work and putting this together. I am excited to go through and listen to what I may have missed. Here is the list I submitted and where they ranked overall.

1. Cruciamentum - Obsidian Refractions (25)
2. Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit (11)
3. Hellripper - Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags (2)
4. Ulthar - Anthronomicon (72)
5. Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium (12)
6. Majesties - Vast Reaches Unclaimed (33)
7. Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (8)
8. Enforced - War Remains (29)
9. Spirit Possession - Of the Sign... (16)
10. Thantifaxath - Hive Mind Narcosis (35)

Awesome year. I am looking forward to listening to all of the 2024 releases.

1. Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit (#11) (2023-09-15 // 20 Buck Spin // Progressive death metal)
Tomb Mold took it ahead of all of the other excellent progdeath releases this year for me due to what I found was an excellent production that gives off osdm vibes while also allowing the softer parts to shine.
Highlights: "Will of Whispers," Fate's Tangled Thread," "The Enduring Spirit of Calamity"

2. Gorod - The Orb (#76) (2023-03-10 // Base Productions/Independent // Progressive death metal)
I've really been a fan of Gorod's work lately and this is my favourite yet. More technical than Tomb Mold and the leads throughout are wonderful.
Highlights: "We Are the Sun Gods," "The Orb," "Victory"

3. Enslaved - Heimdal (#27) (2023-03-03 // Nuclear Blast // Progressive black/viking metal)
In what was a very strong year for black metal, Enslaved comes out on top for me, continuing to evolve their sound and sounding as inspired as ever. My favourite album since RIITIIR (my 2010's Aot Decade).
Highlights: "Behind the Mirror," "Kingdom," "Caravans to the Outer Worlds"

4. Overkill - Scorched (#10) (2023-04-14 // Nuclear Blast // Thrash metal)
Speaking of inspired performances by older bands, Bobby Blitz shows no signs of quitting anytime soon. Seriously, this entire run of albums starting with 2010's Ironbound has been incredible and this ranks amongst the best of them.
Highlights: "Goin' Home," Won't be Comin' Back," "Harder They Fall"

5. Immortal - War Against All (#55) (2023-05-26 // Nuclear Blast // Black metal)
Yes, I have three so-called "legacy" acts, all signed to Nuclear Blast, in a row. Demonaz shows here that he doesn't need Abbath, Horgh or Peter Tagtgren at all. No, who needs any of them when you can just get Arve Isdal and Herbrand Larsen (current and ex-Enslaved members) to work their magic. This is easily the best work to come from Abbath or Demonaz since they split.
Highlights: "Thunders of Darkness," "Return to Cold," "Nordlandihr"

6. Spirit Adrift - Ghost at the Gallows (#171) (2023-08-18 // Century Media // Heavy/doom metal)
This was a new discovery for me; Lots of Khemmis vibes without nearly as much galloping or stoner themes, but the same catchy grooves and penchant for melody both in the leads and the vocals.
Highlights: "Barn Burner," "Death Won't Stop Me," "Siren of the South"

7. Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium (#12) (2023-08-18 // Season of Mist // Progressive death metal)
I am kicking myself for not taking the opportunity to listen to this band several years ago; This was an album I only listened to after seeing others list it here and I was not disappointed.
Highlights: "Chrysopoeia (The Archaeology of Dawn)," "Preterition Hymn," "The Death Knell Ringeth"

8. Skálmöld - Ýdalir (#215) (2023-08-18 // Napalm Records // Viking metal)
I was not a fan of the production of their previous effort; not only do the band correct this here, but they also show a clear step up in songwriting. Is Iceland capable of making bad music?
Highlights: "Urður," "Verðandi," "Veðurfölnir"

9. Kataklysm - Goliath (Rando) (2023-08-11 // Nuclear Blast // Death/groove metal)
Not too surprised this made it to randos, this is a very groove metal-influenced record, taking a page from Decapitated. But this is also Kataklysm's best album is quite some time; I'm a big fan of the riffing style here
Highlights: "Die as a King," "Combustion," "From the Land of the Living to the Land of the Dead"

10. Marduk - Memento Mori (#23) (2023-09-01 // Century Media // Black metal)
It's everything good about Frontschwein combined with everything good about Rom 5:12.
Highlights: "Heart of the Funeral," "Shovel Beats Sceptre," "Coffin Carol"

11. Enforced - War Remains (Death metal/Crossover thrash)
12. ...and Oceans - As in Gardens, So in Tombs (Symphonic black metal)
13. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation (Thrash metal/Garage rock)
14. Insomnium - Anno 1696 (Melodic death/doom metal)
15. Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific (Death metal)
16. Shining - s/t (DSBM)
17. Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg for Death (Death metal)
18. Dødheimsgard - Black Medium Current (Avant-garde/black metal)
19. Faidra - Militant : Penitent : Triumphant (Atmospheric black metal)
20. Sermon - Of Golden Verse (Progressive metal)
21. Nervosa - Jailbreak (Death/thrash metal)
22. In Flames - Foregone (Melodic death metal/alternative metal)
23. Anachronism - Meanders (Dissonant death metal)
24. Azaghal - Alttarimme on luista tehty (Black metal)
25. Thron - Dust (Black metal)
26. The Lion's Daughter - Bath House (Progressive sludge metal)
27. Crypta - Shades of Sorrow (Death metal)
28. Suffocation - Hymns from the Apocrypha (Brutal death metal)
29. Werewolves - My Enemies Look and Sound Like Me (Death metal)
30. Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags (Black/speed metal)
31. The Ocean - Holocene (Progressive sludge metal)
32. Exmortus - Necrophony (Technical death/thrash metal)
33. Kold - Intent mere er (Black metal)
34. Green Lung - This Heathen Land (Stoner/heavy metal)
35. Mork - Dypet (Black metal)
36. Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (Atmospheric black metal)
37. Dethklok - Dethalbum IV (Melodic death metal)
38. Voidescent - Dust and Embers (Black metal)
39. Turbid North - The Decline (Death/groove metal)
40. Hippie Death Cult - Helichrysum (Stoner metal)

No one won the pizza, though. Personally, I was going to guess the Autopsy album as well, if only because their album from a year ago finished near the same spot. Didn't post a guess because I didn't want the free pizza.

Thank you BH for the hard work, and still making it within the first day of the year! Can confidently say that I was listening to enough MA-forward albums and following the voting thread closely enough that the final top 10 isn't surprising, though I expected Hellripper to cinch first place and Panopticon to rank a little higher.

Here's how mine fared in the rankings, which I found more surprising:

1. Oromet – Oromet (66)
2. Kostnatění – Úpal (14)
3. Panopticon – The Rime of Memory (8)
4. Nithing – Agonal Hymns (19)
5. The Night Eternal – Fatale (61)
6. Wothrosch – Odium (329)
7. Varathron – The Crimson Temple (51)
8. Decipher – Arcane Paths to Resurrection (Rando!)
9. Tribunal – The Weight of Remembrance (99)
10. Dozer – Drifting in the Endless Void (291)

So all over the board, with some pairs closer to each other. Did not expect Decipher to be the rando pick instead of Wothrosch, but I'm glad that Varathron places higher than I anticipated, just 3 points shy from the top 50. Lovely album, that one.

Thanks to everyone who participated as well. Now I've got a lot of cool albums to catch up on – great way to start off 2024!

Thanks for the hard work BastardHead and congrats on getting it done before the 2nd!

I was a bit surprised on how many entries there were this year that placed high in the list including the #1, that I was either unaware of or barely knew of them. It's a bit daunting to know I could be missing out on so many great albums, due to a lack of time or just availability/sourcing.

This year I was surprised with how many Rando entries were in my list, despite them being somewhat 'larger fanbase' bands. But at the same time, not quite so surprised as the quality was a bit more modest this year to my ears among them. Still here is my final list and how it performed.

1) Cirith Ungol - "Dark Parade" [#9] - I feel this one definately deserved the placement in the top 10.
2) Overkill - "Scorched" [#10] - Same for Overkill, this was a very deserving album.
3) Marduk - "Memento Mori" [#23] - I'm actually a little surprised this one didn't rank higher, I guess it just didn't get enough higher rank votes.
4) Immortal - "War Against All" [#55] - Ranking feels slighly low, but not that far off as it was surprisingly good. I just got it too late in the year to like it more.
5) Bell Witch - "Future's Shadow" [#163] - For Funeral Doom, this one felt a goodly amount more 'mellow' than the previous, so while I do like it, the ranking feels fine.
6) Blood Ceremony - "The Old Ways Remain" [#102] - I think this was a reasonable placement for a good album.
7) Brujeria - "Esto Es Brujeria" [Rando 7th] - I'm surprised this one was one of my Rando's...but than again I only noticed it in November a couple of months after release.
8) Powerwolf - "Interludum" [Rando 8th] - This one might be mis-labeled in the database. The archives lists it as a "Compilation", Wikipedia has it as a Full-Length and the Powerwolf website itself has it as a 'special release'. But isn't exactly outright stating if it is an EP, Double EP, EP+Bonus or something else. Due to all the new songs you can't even really call it a 'Single Compilation'! So with 6 new tracks and 4 'other' tracks (None of which I believe were released elsewhere.) I'm going to apply the label 'Full Length' to it myself given the content. Also the archive lists "Missa Cantorem II" as a Full-Length, but it was an alternate version of the "Call Of The Wild" album released the year before, but with alt singers and is not a stand alone Full-Length album!
9) Godflesh - "Purge" [#110] - This one feels ranked pretty decently.
10) Lordi - "Screem Writers Guild" [Rando 10th] I got this one late in the year and it made my list simply because it was from 2023 and it inched out the remaining two extra albums I had.

(For completeness, here's the albums I dropped off my list since there were only two.)
11) Night Demon - "Outsider" [#193] - This one needed to stand out more to make my top 10. As such it's placement on the actual list was pretty spot on I think.
12) Metallica - "72 Seasons" [#53] - I was kinda surprised by how decent this one was. But I feel that it's place in the list is overrated. It's just too bland overall. Better than anything they've done since Load/ReLoad, but there's no standout tracks I can point to, just some riffs and melodies that you can kinda get into without getting strongly engaged.

Wow, interesting results. Below is my list + some thoughts.

1. Uada - Crepuscule Natura [133] - I'm kinda surprised they ended up quite "low" in the final results. I like their approach after Djinn, great melodies and hooks, captivating lyrics, with no "filler" songs.
2. Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium [12] - Yeah, what can I say, their best album so far. A unique hodgepodge from the different eras of death metal, with a sleazy, playful approach. Loved it.
3. Mithridatum - Harrowing [Rando] - What the fuck. Seriously, the BEST dissonant death/black metal of the year. If you're into the genre, check it out.
4. Kalmah - Kalmah [49] - One of the first band I've discovered, like them from the very beginning. This is also a pure Kalmah album, nothing I don't like about it.
5. Ignominy - Imminent Collapse [Rando] - The other significant dissonant death metal release of the year.
6. Wormhole - Almost Human [328] - Technical, brutal, crushing.
7. ...and Oceans - As in Gardens, So in Tombs [46]
8. Blaze of Sorrow - Vultus Fati [331] - Beautiful and haunting atmospheric black from Italy.
9. Nightmarer - Deformity Adrift [141] - The third significant dissonant metal album for me from 2023.
10. Maladie - For We Are the Plague [Rando] - Funny, fucked up but still enjoyable avant-garde black metal. I can understand that it can be divisive, but I liked their release.

I haven't even started writing the annual Top 13 post on my blog yet, and I input my ballot last because I just never felt like whatever list I put together was satisfactory in any real way. So I just threw one together based on vibes and memories of an unsatisfactory amount of relistens. I'm happy with it despite there being huge albums for me that I missed.

1) Xoth - Exogalactic (41)
2) Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags (2)
3) Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg for Death (5)
4) Gotsu Totsu Kotsu - Back from the Underworld (174)
5) Quasarborn - Novo oružje protiv bola (RANDO)
6) Lovebites - Judgment Day (30)
7) Sarcoptes - Prayers to Oblivion (RANDO)
8) Lamp of Murmuur - Saturnian Bloodstorm (52)
9) Church of Misery - Born Under a Mad Sign (62)
10) Plaguemace - Reptilian Warlords (RANDO)

The ones I had completely forgotten about when putting the list together were Green Lung and Wayfarer, and I'd probably put the former above Lovebites and the latter above Plaguemace, so it wouldn't have changed the rankings much anyway. My picks did reasonably well in some regards, with two in the top ten and the four well into the upper 1/6th of the non-rando board, but I'm pretty sure three randos is a record for me. Considering how well my list did besides those I'd say anybody who likes what I voted for should check them out, but I mean there isn't much of a genre theme to the albums that did chart either. Quasarborn is a bit hard to describe and most people seemed to agree that the least-worst answer is "modern metal" but it's a very aggressive and twisty style with buttloads of melodies and hooks. Sarcoptes released a fucking rager followup to their debut from like six years ago or whenever, they upped the thrash in their sound to the level of just basically being black/thrash at this point and managed to crank out several 13+ minute tracks that are both interesting and intense the entire time. Plaguemace is meaty, the note I put down when I first heard it was "Hockey Jersey Death Metal", it's really knuckly hardcoreified death metal that sounds like Jungle Rot doing spinkicks.

I'm also a little annoyed that GTK released an album ten days before the deadline, made me say out loud "Man I hope this isn't more of the same and I love it anyway because that would be super fucking predictable of both them and me", and then filled the album with their catchiest songs yet, one that's like 6 straight minutes of Megadeth riffs, and a super punk rock HEY HEY HEY chant over a guitar solo. God damn you GTK stop releasing the albums I wrote in my imagination when I was 14. I love you.

Before looking them up, here's hoping nine of mine are in Rando, here's hoping.

-Ok after searching, it's far worse than I thought, who else voted for Hrothgar, Stygian Love, and Umbrío? You people are evil.
