DarkThrone's latest output was released today. I got the Peaceville so called 'super jewel box', something ugly as shit, with some supposedly 'limited', special, and super bonus 'Fucking Around part I & II' video clips.

Anyone here got it?

It is a continuation of what F.O.A.D. had hinted, although is bears some differences. The riffs are blacker than they were on the previous album, the vocals are drifting between punk and heavy metal raw throating, and the atmospheres of old are numerous, not unreminiscent of A Blaze... or Isengard's Vandreren.

In my opinion, it is slightly better than Fuck Off And Die, in a subtly different awesomeness. It still allows fierce headbanging, while putting off great atmosphere.
Also, the opening riff of the first song, 'The Winds They Called The Dungeon Shaker', is one of the best (and blackest) riffs heard in a good while.

Any opinion as of yet?

On a sidenote: the 'selling-out' and evolution of DarkThrone these years has already been discussed, please avoid all 'Dark Thrones and Black Flags' non-related topics.

My opinion is that it sucks. I'm probably the minority, but I like it that way.

I'm listening to it now (the fourth time today) and I absolutely love it. Though, my opinion is pretty biased, as I'm pretty much a Darkthrone fan-boy.

On a side note, the first time I listened to "The Winds They Called The Dungeon Shaker", every time it came to the part "...they called!.." part, I though he was saying "white power" and I was thinking, "what the fuck?"

It's not too bad, a mix of FOAD but it's more black metal influenced than the previous output.

I knew you'd be the one to make a topic about this. I've listened to a couple of songs on youtube. I like what I've heard.

Why are Darkthrone trying to be a Crust band now(or past few albums rather)?

From what I've heard, it's better than FOAD, but not quite as good as The Cult is Alive.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this. It has the "We're just playing music we love" vibe of FOAD, but the riffs sound better. May have to pick this up after work tomorrow.

edit: Oh, its not quite out here yet. Damn.

They arn't. They're actually playing decent true-as-fuck metal, in my opinion. But I've always been of the opinion that a lot of black metal is one of the least "true" metal genres in terms of heaviness and sound.

I havn't picked up the album, but I've heard some tracks and it's fucking rightous. I like all Darkthrone's material that I've heard, but to me this is some of their best work.

Yeah I've actually been a bit mystified with all the talk of them being crust/black metal these days. I guess I could see how the artwork and the attitude behind the music leans that way, but it sounds more like heavy metal riffs filtered through a bit of norwegian BM, with punk drumming, to me. When I think of crust I instantly think of Amebix and/or Hellbastard...and the new Darkthrone just doesn't sound like that stuff to me. To clarify a bit, I absolutely think there are some punk attributes to this music, just not of the crust variety.

I may need to listen to FOAD more though, to pick up on it. Is it fucked up that I want to buy FOAD now, just to go along with this new record? God damned similar artwork.

Downloaded it last night, plan on buying it on vinyl.

Sounds great, like a combo of F.O.A.D and Sardonic Wrath which is exactly what I wanted.

This is pretty much the only track I can really get into. IMO the rest of the album goes downhill and doesn't come back up until the final track "Witch Ghetto"

Ah? 'Witch Ghetto' rather fails for me... Two words choruses are not really my favourite.

Yeah it's pretty cool, I'm not the biggest fan of Darkthrone but I like what they've been doing lately.

I was expecting more punk influence (judging from the 'Black Flags' aspect of the title) but eh, it's damn cool as it is.

Apparently, Fenriz is a huge fan of the genre. I for one am glad they chose to stick with the crust-y sound.

I don't hear any crust on 'F.O.A.D.' Not sure what you're on about here.

For those who have this and have checked it out, can you please answer me a few questions...

First off, is Culto's voice way out in front of the mix on this one? I have a problem with this, and with many Darkthrone albums, this factor throws me off.

Second, are the riffs any good? I've tried to give current Darkthrone a whirl and had FOAD, SARDONIC WRATH, THE CULT IS ALIVE, HATE THEM etc. I'm all for the punk influenced stuff, but those albums never grabbed me. I'd rather something like KRYPT these days instead which has a bit of that Darkthrone/Celtic Frost vibe.

Thanks.

I wouldn't say its obscenely high in the mix, but its prominent, yes.

I think this basically sounds like a much more engaging version of FOAD with better riffs. I don't know if the riffs are more interesting because Fenriz took a hand in some of the crafting, or what, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

The new album is really fucking good!!! it's my favorite since the cult is alive. The album is a continuation of fuck off and die but even better in my opinion.

Best tracks: The Winds They Called the Dungeon Shaker, Hiking Metal Punks, Hanging Out in Haiger.

I believe Fenriz wrote 4 or 5 out of the 9 songs on 'FOAD,' if I'm not mistaken. Does the new album sound more in the vein of 'These Shores are Damned?' That song is EPIC.

Hmm, I don't know what the cause is then, I guess they just buckled down and stepped their shit up.

These Shores are Damned is a pretty great song, possibly my favorite from FOAD. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with saying the entire album is on par with that song. I think there are some comparable tracks like "Oath Minus" and maybe "Norway in September". Honestly its a pretty short album, you guys could download this very quickly and decide for yourselves whether its worth your money.

I haven't heard this yet, but I will buy it whenever I get the chance. I thought the band was on the right track with Hate Them and Sardonic Wrath, then The Cult is Alive came out and it was an instant hit with me. FOAD was not too much to my liking and honestly I don't like crust or punk at all, though I've never really given the former much of a chance. Some of the descriptions in this thread are definitely raising my hopes for this album, saying the riffs are blacker makes me happy.

Since Fenriz wore a Uncurbed shirt on the promo pics of the second last record. Will wait until the vinyl-version is out.

Just gave it a listen. Not bad. Different. It's not really blowing my mind though. It'll probably relegated to the occasional section of my cd booklet.

I like it. Hasn't grabbed me as fast as FOAD did, but I have only listened to it about 4 or 5 times so far so I have no idea how well it will age. With FOAD I found that some of the less "immediate" songs took a long time to get into, but once that happened the album was just taken to the next level. I think this is going to happen here as well. I like it more every time.

i've only given it two listens thus far, but i think i definitely prefer FOAD.

then again, i was hoping they'd go further into "punk territory" with this release.

I just listened to it now and well, it's ok but nothing special. The first riff on The Winds... reminds me of something they would have done in 93. The songs are all very bland and lack any real direction. Some of the riffs here and there are cool, but I find most of them to be uninspired. The drumming is what you'd expect. Nothing really good, just decent. Nocturno's vocals used to be some of the best in black metal, or just metal in general, but now he just sounds half-assed. Fenriz used to sound good on the Isengard material, but he even sounds downright irritating at times.

Oh well. I'm sure the next album, which is sure to be out no later than summer of 2009, will be even more derivative. At least I still have everything up to The Cult is Alive to listen to.

Dunno, for me Darkthrone kinda died beginning with Goatlord. The new album...hard to say something...and with them stating in an interview that they are disgusted with the idea of fan club, of someone being a fan of someone, that they don't sing for the listeners and don't give a fuck about what people say, and stuff...maybe, as someone stated in a review on the archives, this is the (only) cool thing about Darkthrone's last albums - that they don't give a fuck

p.s. we are waiting for a 2009 release
