Seen danzig, dimmu borgir, and moonspell last night in Tempe. Danzig put on a great fucking show. He can sure still rock out for an old guy. I'm not an avid dimmu listener but when they played the serpentine offering that really didn't matter. I think Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch played earlier but I got in just in time for moonspell. Great damn show, just wondering who around Phoenix made it.

I live in Tempe. But I had no idea they were playing here last night. I've been too busy lately but had I had time I might have checked some of it out. Was it that club near Mill?

I lived in Tempe on Hardy by University from 1999 to 2003. If I was still there I would've made the show. Of course I may be moving back there in 2 years. Hopefully at least one of the GOOD bars, as opposed to the big-chain establishments that are basically taking over, will still be there.

Exactly. ASU has turned that area completely corporate. What used to be Changing Hands, Lotions and Potions and Long Wong's is now taken up by Starbucks and Borders. At least ZIA is still there.

What they did to Long Wong's, Bandersnatch, McDuffys, and the Timberwolf is nothing less than an atrocity. I loved Long's wings. I mean how many Applebee's, Chili's, TGIF's, Chuck E Cheese's, and Texas Roadhouses does a city really need? Of course Tempe seems hell-bent on becoming just like California or Anytown, USA, like so many bland LA suburbs. I'm not so sure I really wanna go back- the Tempe I knew and loved is pretty much gone. Of course at least Tops Liquors, Casey Moore's, and Four Peaks are still there.

I haven't checked out any of the other places you mentioned because it just isn't the place to hang anymore. The reason why ASU was named Playboy's #1 party school (dethroning U of A) is because all those cool joints are gone so now they just party at their dorms. That place used to be even a little bohemian in it's culture but now it's like Cali suburbs.
And if you're a metalhead, there's always Tempe Beach. Not in Tempe, but have any of you guys been to Metal Devastation? I haven't been there but I suspect it's still kind of a substandard distro despite it's slogan in the ads say: "If you like Metallica, you won't like us."

What is the place to hang now? PLEASE tell me it's not Snottsdale! It kinda looks like Tempe's trying to copy them. I loved McDuffy's reverse happy hour, with $3 full-sized pitchers, and the beer selection at Timberwolf(150 beers on tap, 250 in bottles), and I was really hoping Bandersnatch would reopen or find a new place to brew- I'm a sucker for brewpubs and multitap bars. Of course I can see where running out all the establishments that had cheap beer specials and replacing them with "trendy" corporate chain establishments with way overpriced drinks would drive college students to stick to drinking in their dorms and apartments. The big corporate types, developers and tourists may love the corporatization of Tempe's night scene, but I'm sure many of the actual residents want nothing to do with it, so they take their dollars to Mesa, Chandler, and Phoenix.

Tops Liquor has arguably the largest beer selection in the Valley. I was more or less a regular since I lived right by there.

Isn't Metal Devastation on Camelback? I went by there a couple times, but never had a chance to actually go in. Maybe when I move back though....

I am not a bar or nightclub person so I couldn't tell you for sure. But Snottsdale is a scene if you are a yuppie and drive a nice car and are into fake people. There are a couple nice Irish pubs along Apache I think near the campus. McDuffey's is an ok hangout from what I hear. And Grand Central is a pretty good club for all sorts of music. Haven't been ther ein awhile though.

You mean the Vine? Yeah, that's a cool place. They knew me fairly well there. If it's still there when I go back, I'll have to swing by.

I don't think I've heard of Grand Central. Is that in Phoenix?

I ate at The Vine tonight and it's one of the local eateries I haunt the most. But it is not that place. There was a smaller pub along there but the name escapes me. Grand Central -if that is what it's still called- is in Tempe on Priest and Elliot on the SW corner.
There is a metal pub/ppol hall place in Mesa that you might want to check out. I'll look it up but I ran into one of the Sacred Reich guys over there. I can't remember his name either because frankly, I don't care for that band. Great spot to hang out at though with music and all.

Yeah, what was Danzig's setlist? I'd like to know, too.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Marquee Theater is where I saw Les Claypool, it was a pretty good venue.

I heard he did a pretty good cover of Hand of Doom. I still wished he had John Christ on guitars. Yes, that was the Marquee where you say Claypool.

i'm not sure of danzig's entire setlist, but the songs I do know they played are

How the Gods Kill
Twist Of a Cain
Not Of This World
Long Way Back From Hell

a bunch of other ones
and for their final song they played Mother.

Danzig surprised the shit out of me, I didn't know he still had it in him. I've always liked danzig but was never a real fan until after I seen them live. Definetly worth checking out if you've got the chance.
