I have a discography book that lists all re releases and what the original releases formats were. It's a few years old but will work for this. All the dates people are spitting out are simply when the music was made, not the CD.

The earliest Iron Maiden release put to CD is Powerslave Sept. 84
Some people were saying Number Of The Beast but that wasn't released as a CD until Apr. 88

I'll do some more reasearch and try to find something earlier than that.

After 5 minutes of searching. Supposedly 'Animalize' by KISS was the first metal album to be pressed onto CD according to some guy on this thread in another forum.

http://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/sho ... ber=381909

His quote being:

"I remember when Kiss came out with the first heavy metal album on CD, Animalize, and there was a bit of controversy because journalists feared it would be too loud, that it might destroy the CD player and perhaps the CD itself. I don't know if that's Gene Simmons superhype, or the classical people who didn't want their digital discs tainted with unserious music, but I remember reading letters from people who were worried about the volume."

But i cant find anything else to back that up.

seems like a logical answer. KISS had amassed a fortune by this time, and was always on the cutting edge of trends and marketing. they had huge backing from their label, and paul & gene are pretty business savvy. if not, as mentioned by others Priest seems a logical choice....

I don't think it's true and here's why. If CD's came out to the public in Oct.82 i'm thinking there would be a limited amount of artists available and they would be very mainstream stuff. I highly doubt that in the last few months of 82 they would be getting around to Maiden re-releases

Kiss never released a metal album, otherwise they'd be here on M-A.

It's a mistake to think that. I know it's all subjective, but Rush here and KISS not is also a mistake.

Anyway, I'm sure it's a band that released an album in '84 on a major label that was issuing albums on cd that year. Then again, perhaps they were selective on the titles manufactured and Metal bands didn't make the cut if they didn't sell enough. I know that Megaforce released Metallica's first 2 albums, and they did issue KEA on disc prior to Elektra. I have it. So that would've been '84, or '85. Not sure when the Elektra deal kicked in.

1982 is the earliest year for CDs, before that it was in an experimental stage. It was concieved in 1977 and developed in 1979, released around 1982 with the first album released on CD being 52nd Street by Billy Joel (although it was a rerelease).
