... a short period of time ago

This happen to me 2 weeks ago when a female friend asked me to download something from the corrs, and by accident i found a link to download "the winterlong" by god macabre.
i downloaded it and let me tell you this, i hate myself for not listening this album before, it's just amazing, brutal and beautiful.

Well I'm listening to Black Sabbath's debut for the second time, the first time being yesterday (it's 2:17am here).

I've never actually listened to Metallica's black album all the way through, and I've only heard about half the songs. So that could be me!

Man, you've been missing out on some great stuff! That first song, y'know what that is? That's what happened when Iommi and crew disappeared into a green-tinged cloud and emerged with a gift for mankind!

I haven't actually heard that one either. I've been into Black Sabbath almost as long as I have been into metal (15 years) but since my first Sabbath albums were Greatest Hits albums, I've heard the big name songs and it just hasn't been a real high priority to get all of the albums. I do have most of the early ones though.

My most famous one is the discovery of Black Sabbath early this year, the reaction was incredulous.

I know, I'm on about my fifth listen in a row for the title track, this is dark as hell even now, I'd love/hate to imagine what this song sounded like in 1970!

I still haven't heard Sepultura's debut album yet....even though I used to own everything from Schizophrenia up to Roots at one point.....

To be perfectly honest, Morbid Visions is nothing special, there's far better albums in that style from that era. The production is less raw and more thin and weak unfortunately.

Troops of Doom still dominates though.

Basically anything old I've ever heard because I got into metal about 2-3 years ago.

Yeah, I have no real desire to listen to the whole thing. All the singles I've heard are pretty mediocre. Even when I was a much bigger Metallica fan, back when I was first getting into metal, I preferred the earlier stuff, especially Kill 'Em All.

EDIT: To actually contribute to the thread, I hadn't heard Panzer Division Marduk until about a month ago. And I've been a huge black metal fan for a good while now. I know this could be a contested classic, but it's definitely a very well known album, at least.

It has been for a long time in mainstream heavy metal circles. Plus, the OP wanted to see a post by someone who had only heard the Black album for the first time yesterday... and since I have never heard it, I could listen to it today and make that very post tomorrow.

Anyway...Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness". I had already heard Domination and Covenant, but AoM...just wow. Amazing album, all the way through.

Answering the OP, there aren't really any classic albums I got into until just recently. When I first started getting really into metal, I made a point of going through the wikipedia articles on sub-genres and listening to all the important bands/albums. I guess the closest thing for me would be how I finally got really excited about Blood Fire Death. and Hammerheart. The first time I heard them I didn't really find them that special, but now I realize how awesome they are.

nothing Metal for me, but I did listen to Ted Nugent-S/T couple of weeks ago for the first time. Bought it used on Vinyl. Gooooood Stuff.

Didn't listen to Scum until a few weeks ago. I was not blown away by it, though, and it made me wonder why this album is considering such an influence and the foundation for grindcore or whatever, because there are a bunch of grind bands that I have listened to that all sounded better than this.

Everything. I jumped straight to Burzum at 14 and only during the past year and a half or so I've been discovering, well, anything recorded before 1990.

I just heard some Tank for the first time the album Honour and Blood.

obviously, they were one of the first.
regardless of the quality of them vs bands they influenced-if they did it first, or in the first wave, then they would be heralded as forefathers no matter what.

I only started listening to Dio-Rainbow about a year and a half ago, which is pretty ridiculous since Deep Purple, Dio-Sabbath & Dio are artists I've listened to for over a decade. Rising is thuh shiznut.

There are very few albums I have actually listened to in their entirety, I just download songs individually most of the time, the only album I know for sure that I have listened to from start to finish is Opeth's Watershed which I listened to earlier today on Youtube.

Never listened to a single manowar song

I never listened to Pestilence, despite all of the hype, until about 2 months ago. I finally went out and bought Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients. Both of 'em are great, and I should've gotten around to them sooner.

Still have yet to listen to any Priest or any Morbid Angel.

in my unlistened music folder i have bulldozer, tankard, voivod's first album, and sepultura's arise album, dream evil's discography, and two albums from Gamma Ray



a few months ago i had heard Hirax's Raging Violence for the first time, now it's an album i really dig and had to pick up on LP when i found it. Corrosion of Conformity is another band i've only just recently picked up.

until recently i haven't given grindcore a fair shot, the only grind bands i really listened to being insect warfare, napalm death, repulsion, carcass, and cattle decapitation...so i recently discovered terrorizer, pig destroyer, and nasum....all of which have become great bands in my opinion.

rotting christ is also a recent discovery of mine, never knowing where to begin i made sure to download every album, apart from the strictly gothic metal period they had in their late 90's early 00's albums, i don't mind their stuff

there's plenty of stuff that i've heard of but never got around to playing, especially in terms of classics. Death and black metal, sure. I know plenty of stuff, but when it comes to power metal, traditional metal, thrash metal, and stuff a lot of my friends are into, i tend to seem the odd one out when i say i'm not as familiar with some classics or well-known bands to those genres.

i've just recently started getting into Crematory, although they're not very old.

I've barely heard any Priest and I didn't hear Killing is My Business in its entirety.

Also, what's with the Black Album? Sure the whole thing is inconsistent but songs like The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, while they're probably the softest, are also quite awesome.

I never heard Horrified until a year ago.

i didnt hear it until a few weeks ago. im not entirely sure why its a classic.
