I'm definitely not a fan of any Rotting Christ from after 1996, but I really must say, they are very cool guys and put on a fantastic show, so you really shouldn't miss them. THey play a lot of old stuff and even their newer material doesnt' come across too badly. Also, I was impressed by their demeanour and attitude .... they seemed more than happy to play in front of a tiny crowd here in Toronto even though they probably lost money on the tour, and Sakis seems so pleased that my friend and I were talking to him about "Passage to Arcturo" and stuff. Yeah, go see them!

Most definitely will do! I'm pleased to hear they have a good attitude, especially since I have mild fangirl syndrome towards them.

I'm from suburban Dallas, and there are A TON of nu-metal people in the suburbs, but Dallas itself actually has a very good metal scene.

I think the Pacific Northwest has a pretty good scene. Seattle puts on Northwest Deathfest now called Emerald City Deathfest. In the past they have had Seattle Metalfest. Portland has put on two HeathenFest festivals in recent years. There is also a Metal magazine publication out of Portland, OR; 'Crave Magazine'. Portland has several good music venues; The Hawthorne Theater, The Satyricon, The Crystal Ballroom, The Roseland Theater and there are several other venues that host Metal shows on a regular basis. Seattle has some good venues as well; Studio Seven, and El Corazon.

Some of the bands from Washington and Oregon:

Ceremonial Castings - Battle Ground, WA
Inquinok - Seattle, WA
Corporal Mortification - Seattle, WA
In Memorium - Seattle, WA
Tallboy Shotgun - Vancouver, WA
H.M.P. (Heavy Metal Poetry) - Northbend, WA
Somnon Ballistic - Everett, WA & Portland, OR
Engorged - Portland, OR
Vintegaas - Portland, OR
Brainsic - Portland, OR
Apocalypsehead - Portland, OR
Last Empire - Portland, OR
StoneCreep - Portland, OR
Proven - Portland, OR
Ashen Relic - Portland, OR
Deverra - Portland, OR
Necryptic - Eugene, OR

Los Angeles has a good metal scene, although a lot of people seem to hate on it. There are quite a few generic death metal bands, but theres a thriving black metal scene and a pretty decent thrash scene. Of course, the large population of people in general means that there appear to be very few metalheads in the area, but we come out of the woodwork for a good show. The Black Castle is a good underground venue with good promotion (Horna, Revenge, Nightbringer, and Inquisition have all played there recently) where there is a show almost every weekend. Of course, there are also a lot of children who complain that its nothing like the European scene (although the idea that any of them have ever been to Europe is dubious at best).

I hate on our scene all the time. Los Angeles is the internet metal community of US cities. Going to Dark Realm Records and hearing a bunch of wannabe kvlt (they call themselves that) high schoolers and seeing a bunch of kids looking like 1985 all over again. We do get good shows and have some good bands all around the city, I just highly dislike the people. Metalcore/deathcore people are nowhere near as annoying.

This is true. There are a lot of irritating children in the scene that bring it down for the rest of us. They're all have a Myspace (I do too :oh shit:) and just got into metal 2 years ago. There are a lot of old school guys though who I tend to gravitate towards (Hatewar, Nokturne guys, Sadistic Intent, etc.).

I have one too, but who cares about that. They're really bad and since most metal shows here are all-ages you can't avoid it. There aren't that many bands out here I like either, basically the ones you mentioned, and Insision from Pacoima.

I have never been to dark realm, but I will head there soon. I am on the younger side, and have absolutely no idea what you both are talking about in regards to "kvlt kiddies." I also though hardly attend metal events, and I go to Amoeba around two times a year(at most). A little more elaboration?

You'll see it in full display there. Usually Bay and Rick are at the store and they're great to talk to, but there's always groups of high-school age kids, acting just like an internet elitist troll would online, with a fanzine going to boot. I've had one guy tell me not to listen to black metal because I wear nice clothes (????), and another guy tell me with the straightest face possible that any music that isn't black metal is "nigger music". Worse yet, you see all these people at BM gigs all the time, most BM gigs are at the Black Castle and that place is just like Dark Realm.

In short: The majority of people care more about the "scene" than the music around here. That shouldn't surprise anyone though, it's Los Angeles

That is funny and sad at the same time. I always make fun of Varg lovers online, but to think that it can transcend the boundaries into the physical world is insane....Next you think that they would say they are more "kvlt" than you....

Well I guess I am not missing out on much...unless dark realm has a good selection of music...

I definitely have to agree that a vast majority of LA metalheads are more about the scene than the music (more or less a Southern California attitude). However, I have never encountered any such kvlt kiddies, and I've been going to LA shows for close to 10 years now. There have been the occasional idiots coming around with an elitist attitude, but most of the time it's more laughable than anything.

Also (to norilor), you should definitely check out Dark Realm some time. Not only do they have an outstanding selection, but the owners (Rick and Bay from Sadistic Intent) are cool as hell, and would rather talk to someone who knows their shit rather than the aforementioned high school kiddies.

The Denver/Colorado Springs area is pretty good, alot of underground bands that are doing well, especially with BM. There are bands like Frozen Eternity, Niddhog, And Hell Followed and Acheronian Dirge that are doing great, but then of course you have the obvious death/metal/grindcore bands that are doing shit.

But here in Pueblo where I live, there is rarely any metalheads. Personally, I know 4 that know their stuff. The only bands worthy are checking out are Spoken In Fire and Commerce of Cadavers, who both play DM. Other than that, the scene and fans here are shit.

yeah, that's what I've heard about Pueblo...

you're lucky though, cause your next to the springs. There's plenty of good bands there.

From my experience, Denver does have a ok scene. Most of the bands seem to be Death/grind, which can get rather old. But we have our share of great black and Death metal (Scalafrea, Cobalt, Spoken in Fire)

Denver is not so bad. Though, I wish there were more Death/Thrash, or something Death metal away from death/grind bands around. Atleast the death/grind we do have isn't horrible.

Yea, the Chicago area is pretty good. Metal Haven is an awesome store.

I live in Central Illinois and the metal scene here is just that, 'scene'.

Tons of metalcore kids who think they're kvlt because they know who Cryptopsy is.

I fucking hate this area, but I'm sure it's going to be like that in any moderate size town.

I live in central IL, too... I know your pain.

Deathcore is huge in the midwest unfortunately. Also Dimmu Borgir is pretty big where I live.

Well, I live in PA and have yet to see any one who is really into metal. There was some guy who went to my school who wore an Immortal shirt once, although I think every other day of the year he wore a COF one. And I don't go to shows, which isn't helping.

Whereabouts in PA?

I live in Lancaster.

In general I think Metalheads would gravitate away from rural Pennsylvania. That said, March to Victory is from there. Their guitarist Izzy works at the Lancaster Brewing Company, which makes a delicious Milk Stout I must say. Drank a few of them bitches when I went with those guys to see them play some crappy NYDM show in The Bronx.

The scene where I live is beyond shit. There are literally two other real metal heads here I know and they're both in my band (only real local metal band).
