I'm a big fan of a lot of the early stuff like Crowbar, Eyehategod and Acid Bath but where has this genre gone?

It's still around as far as I know. Groups like Rwake and Deadbird are recent sludge metal bands.

There are plenty of bands still around. Hail!Hornet, Weedeater, and Bongzilla are some I can think of.

You'll find a lot in the doom/stoner metal thread.

This.

Voices of Omens by Rwake is really good and Twilight Ritual of Deadbird is probably even better. So both are highly recommended.

Yeah, I've been meaning to pick up some Rwake cd's. Their next on the list.

Well, I completely forgot about that band because the last material they released was that EP about 6 years ago. They are more stonerish though...which isn't necessarily bad.

Kylesa, Rwake, Deadbird, Bongzilla... all are worth checking out. Especially Rwake. Rwake in particular stand out quite a bit.

Indeed they do. I haven't given them a spin in a while, but the riffs in Leviticus are monolithic.

Metal that sounds like it was influenced by southern rock. Lynard Skynard, CCR ect.

There is a band from here in Reno called The Farley Overdose. They have a lot of influence from Hardcore and Sludge alike.

Yeah, I have everything by them. I know they are considered Southern Metal on this site but I look at them more as traditional Heavy/Groove. Kind of Alice in Chains meets Pantera.

I find it funny when a European band plays southern metal, since "southern" is in the context of the U.S. Though I suppose it's no different than bands who play celtic metal that aren't from around Ireland.

Examples without an explanation. And no, I sincerely don't know what southern rock/metal is, and would like some background info.

The English band Pig Iron annoy me for this exact reason. Afew friends of mine know the guitarist so they obsess over the band, but the guitarist tends to wear hats with the confederate flag on, it makes them seem ridiculously deluded.

Wikipedia article on southern rock. Basically the sound of the bands that came out of the southern US during the late 60's and 70's.
