They're not bad, but they are supremely overrated and the originality/novelty wears off fairly quickly. They've got a couple good tunes, but for the most part it pretty haphazardly thrown together.

I like Eluveitie quite a bit. I disagree with the more stratospheric statements that are made about them ("the new wave of folk metal," "the best band in folk metal," etc.), but I find their music to be quite enjoyable. Plus their lyrical themes are pretty unique and authentic to their place of origin; they don't simply recycle lyrical themes that other bands have already run into the ground.

I suppose it's possible, but what would we be hearing... the typical folk instruments under an onslaught of breakdowns?

Hey, I'll listen to anything once!

My friend's a huge folk metal fanatic, and I joke about the day folk metal becomes the next genre to be fused with shitty trendcore. I see it like this:

Kids who listen to too much Finntroll and who have no idea who Quorthon is, dressed in skirts (not kilts) with rainbow Nikes, flat-billed baseball caps, faux-warpaint (more like too much eyeliner), playing with a keyboardist who takes too much influence from Nintendo and rehashed humpaa, using samples of bagpipes, flutes, and accordions during breakdowns.

Anyways, I think Eluveitie are a cool band, but I'm not really into them, I prefer other folk metal bands. Their performance at Paganfest earlier this year was sensational, but when I saw them open for Kataklysm, I was disappointed. I think it sucks that the Kirder twins left, and when I saw them that second time, they were using a computer with samples because their new bagpipe/flute player couldn't get into the US. The hurdy-gurdy girl rocks though.

Is it just me or does anybody else think they sound like newer Dark Tranquillity with folk instruments instead of keyboards?

Can't stand the way their vocalist sings, but I enjoy their instruments a lot.

That's a pretty interesting comparison, never thought about it. I figure they are quite similar if we remove the keyboards/folk instruments and just listen to the base music. Either way, both bands rock.

I quite liked them when I was first getting into metal, but the novelty (Hurdy gurdies in metal? WOW!) wore off, and I'm not really into them anymore. Not terrible by any means, just a bit boring.

Despite a lot of people not liking them, I actually find the lead vocals the most interesting part of the band.

I did quite fancy the hurdy gurdy player, but that's no reason to listen to them.

I just threw up a little bit...

I do.
It's basiclly new In Flames with random folk instruments added.

You have damaged ears? Because comparing Eluveitie to new In Flames otherwise would be absurd. Altough I see some resemblece to the Gothenburg style in their music, its still very far from the stuff that In Flames plays nowadayas; if the later played that way they would suck so much this days.

I like them a lot. I don't think they're the best folk metal band by any means, but their music is very respectable - I think.

I would say they combine melodic death and folk metal together very well. Which is cool because most folk metal bands are much more aligned with black metal. "Slania", in particular, definitely punctuates the melodic death portion of their sound (sounding very Gothenburg to me).

All in all, I think their a really solid band, and I wouldn't even think about not picking up their next release (whenever it does come out)...

He obviously does. The comparison to NEW In Flames is definitely far from the truth. It's safe to say their is a Gothenburg influence with the guitar playing, which is like old In Flames, more along the style of Dark Tranquillity.

Spirit is a great album, but Slania I would say is pretty much mediocre. It seems to me that in Spirit the band actually incorporated the folk instruments meaningfully, while in Slania it just sounds like Gothenburg with flutes.

I like them but having 2 guitarists in the band is very unnecessary.

I absolutely agree with that - and the track 'Gray Sublime Archon' could have been written by DT if I didn't know better.

Good band.

Yeah, they would be just another gothenburg act without the folk stuff. However, with the folk stuff they really do create a unique sound....

I don't listen to them much (as you say, they don't stick that well), but they do create some really catchy folk stuff; no question about that.

Good band. I like their newest album "Slania" and they remind me of Dark Tranquillity at times. Personally I thought they stole the show at Paganfest this year.

The band has some info on their next album on their official forum. They've posted the artwork, tracklist and recording progress.

i feel a bit skeptic about an acoustic album (evocation I) but let's wait to judge it, i trust in Chrigel when it comes to build cool folk atmospheres

I thought it really sucked that the twins (Ravi and Sevan Kirder) were ejected out of the band for whatever personal reasons. I talked to the new bassist on the tour with Kataklysm and Keep of Kalessin that the twins didn't get along with the rest of the band very well.

But either way I find it sad that they left, for one, they were the reason they stole the show at Paganfest because they had so much energy. I hope it doesn't affect them on record either though.

I totally agree. Them, shirtless, in their kilts, dancing around with the other members, they brought the excitement that just wasn't there for me when they opened for Kataklysm.

At Paganfest or their most recent US tour w/ Kataklysm, did any of the venues have trouble with setting up/micing the folk instruments? It happened at Jaxx during Paganfest. It took the staff an extra 10 minutes to get the flute amplified, which affectedly took out a chunk of Týr's set.

The vocals are more akin to Bodom and Norther rather than any metalcore band. Keep in mind that metalcore vocals are more hardcore-ish than any other genre. And Eluveitie's vocals definitely AREN'T hardcore influenced.

But if the band incorporate more clean sections and some breakdowns into their music, they'll create a new genre.

Not entirely sure what to think of them, as their live performance I saw (with Kataklysm) wasn't all that great.

Although one of the band member's shirt kept falling down with her tits hanging out most of the set, which was a plus

I liked their first album back when I was going through a folk metal phase in my music listening. Now that I look back I remember I only really liked one song of their album spirit and the rest of the album just seemed to be filler to me. The are certainly one of my lesser favorites among the popular folk metal bands that are around today.
