I've noticed that a lot of black metal fans (and some bands), feel the need to divide up into a rivalry. This rivalry is between fans of Norse/pagan/viking themed bands and bestial black or "war" metal fans. Is there some sort of reason for this other than the fact that the opposing side is "gay"?

This even goes as far as some trading distros not wanting to trade any "twinkly Tolkien pagan" shit. And others saying "for True Norwegian Black Metal only."

Can you post some links or some proof of this? Because people talk shit about music all the time.

Of the war metal bands (bands influenced by Blasphemy or Beherit etc...)that I've seen most of them spout of things like Fuck Norway between their songs.

I think you are gay for making such a crappy topic. There is no war among bm fans, only among pimply faced teenagers who either worship euronymous or the Cunt Grishnakh. There are many people who hate folk metal as the themes could be interpreted as gay, but there is no war, and if it is the war is probably some pathetic internet war.

Of course there was that Norwegian band called Fuck Beherit back in 1992 when there was the so-called "dark war" or whatever the hell they called between Norway and Finland which involved prank calls (to people such as Faust I believe) and some death threats. Silly stuff for the most part, but it has nothing to do with this little internet bullshit you're talking about.

It is true for the most part. Definitely more so between band members than "fans". It's just not really all that relevant because all it has to do with is musical preference and ideas of what black metal "should be".

I thought it had something to do with Norway commercialising it in 1993/1994 with the murders and church burnings.

From what I understand, war metal is a pseudo genre in the vain of something like "Pirate metal" or "Beer metal" or something like that.

Some of that is definitely part of the argument.. it's quite a while ago.. I think nowadays it's more of what they consider an "impotent" (norse) sound which no longer voices the extremity of the genre.

What an ironic thread; this was suppose to be about a rivalry between fans in a similar genre yet folks are debating whose "gayer" than who. LAME!... yet funny. Get back on topic or a MOD might lock this shit because people are bitching and not discussing like civilized forum surfers... if there is such a thing.

Well to be serious I would guess that the "war" metal bands do not approve of the ideology and possible beliefs of pagan/folk metal, as pagan/folk bands are either preaching happiness/NS/pride/not misanthropy and I guess someone with a lot of spare time can start a "war."

I think that's a tad bit padantic don't you think? I don't think that a common misspelling of a word is "TyPiN LyK dIs", actual I find that phrase to be quite ironic and amusing seeing as it takes more effort to constantly hit the caps lock or shift key than it is to write in one case.

On topic, the only place I've ever seen that type of behaviour is online, I've meet plenty of BM fans who seem nice and friendly and not "Lolz look at that fag he's wearing a Mayhem shirt, let's beat the shit outta him, COME ON LADS" although I admit I would chuckle if I saw that.

Keep in mind that many of the "war metal" bands have a vaguely humourous streak to them. I'm a fan of both styles, but for the most part, I'd rather thrash out some Angel Corpse or Blasphemy until my neck is broken.

The supposed "war" between different black metal scenes generally amounts to no more than a few "Fuck -insert band here-" statements and the odd prank call. It is extremely childish.

Agreed, I wouldn't say there is any sort of "war." There are idiots who have probably been listening to BM for about 2 month who throw fits and use words like "trve" un-ironically, but these people don't count.

Otherwise, yes there are divisions, but there are divisions in any genre. For example, I think all (well, 99% of) symphonic BM sucks because I hate keyboards and singing, but I'm not going to declare war on such things, I just choose not to listen to it. I think it's more a matter of there being different subsubgenres and people will stick with the ones that they like.

I can't stand most Folk Metal, the majority is pure shit(Although Moonsorrow rules). That being said, I love Black Metal, and am particularly fond with the raw-er variation. It's just about taste. Raw Black Metal is certainly much different from Pagan Black or Folk Metal.


I believe the Norway/Finland rivalry came from the Norwegian bands lashing out at the Finnish scene for not being as violent.

People always want to criticize each other and create sides; it's in our human nature to razz.

The only thing I'm aware of is "tr00 kvlt blakk methulz" fans accusing bands like Dimmu Borgir of being pussy music.
