Yeah... Now when I look back at thet I'm quite displeased with it as well. Afterwards I remembered Necrofrost, and also that Arckanum had a '08 release.

Damn. I totally forgot about those releases.... :(

This is especially bad since Arckanum is one of my favourite bands of all time...........

I also totally forgot about Toxic Holocaust at the time...

Looking back at the list now, I'm not even sure myself exactly ewhat I was thinking when I even included Alestorm in it... Sure, they're good for a laugh but not much beyond that.

I think I was stoned when I put that list together though. That would certainly explain the fact that I don't really know what I was thinking when I chose some of those, and also how I succeeded to simply forget one of my favourite bands of all time (Arckanum).

It's not as bad as it could've been though. Vonsidering the way I sometimes think while stoned, I could've just easily gotten some big revalation about the greatness of recent Cryptopsy or talked myself into believing that Altars Of Madness was a 2008 release...

6. 230 Equilibrium – Sagas <5-2-0-0-0-2-0-0-0-2>

That was possibly one of the worst things i've ever listened to, i can't believe that got ahead of Dismember AND Krallice, let alone a slew of other great bands.

Thanks a lot Mikey for the effort, although I'm quite disappointed by the list.... and it reminds me that i still haven't bothered to listen to Origin.

It is complete disappointment.

On the other side I see some more fans of Akphaezya, thats good!

Had I bothered to vote, I would have included The Black Flux. A damn fantastic album that one is.

Amon Amarth at number one... :nono: I am saddened.

I just realized that I forgot to include one of my favorite 2008 albums, AND no one else voted for it. Jeez, I'm ashamed. The album is "Hope Dies" by Misery's Omen - one of the best and most interesting slabs of black/prog/death/whatever metal in the last few years.

I'd glad for the list. Despite the ''it's popular so let's bash it'' factor I absolutely love both the Amon Amarth and Equilibrium albums and am glad they're so high up on the list.

I don't really care about the Opeth album being so high up, it's not like I listen to it very often but I can appreciate it from time to time. This survey kind of makes me wish I'd have listened to some newer black metal to replace some of the stuff in the second half of my list.

Overall it's great and Mikey, you did a great job!

I didn't vote for any re-issues. Just a policy of mine. Otherwise, my list probably wouldn't have a single album from 2008.

Bands like Waylander so low?!

IN FLAMES EVEN ON THIS LIST!??!?!

Well, it's good to see at least Amon Amarth made top spot which I agree with as well as several others so high. Nice job Mikey!

I also decided not to vote for compilation albums. When it comes to music, Hellhammer would've easily taken the top spot, but if the survey is about the best releases of 2008, I can't really see the point in including stuff that is nearly three decades old. There are different standards for re-releases and compilations than there are for new albums. Demon Entrails could've made it to my list just because of the awesome cover art and packaging of the deluxe digibook and the 3-LP set, but can you really compare cover art to actual music? Maybe, but I thought that it would've been a bit unfair towards newer bands. Plus, now I had a chance to include a couple of my favorite demos on my list as well.

I decided to limit my list to original material of 2008. The Hellhammer release, while it contains some of the best music to be found anywhere in metal, doesn't contain any 2008 material. It's a compilation of old material, and as such I wouldn't really count it as a 2008 release. I try to limit my choices to actual new material.

The release in question is awesome though, and I got my hands on the deluxe digipack pretty much as soon as it hit the shelves.

Bah, I think this is a release of such high status that the thought of not having it on the list should've crossed ones mind. Legendary as it was announced.
Also got the delux digipack and the vinyl, great stuff.

I only got the digipack, since I don't have access to a working vinyl player, nor the money to buy one.

This makes it quite pointless for me to buy anything on vinyl at the moment since I can't even play them. I don't have the money to spend on expensive music that I can't even play.

Besides, I've saved Hellhammer for the best metal releases of all time survey.

I don't agree with some of the albums that were voted the most (starting with Amon Amarth, which was kind of an obvious winner, or Opeth) but it's nice to see that Vertebrae made well, although lower than it deserves, and that Ereb Altor ended up relatively high on 34. Earth ended surpisingly low though, The Bees Made Honey etc was a truly amazing album.

I don't have a vinyl-player yet either. ;D Feels kind of silly, since I own about 50 vinyls. But I'm too picky, so the stuff I want is too expensive so I got to save up until I can buy a quality record player.

Personally, it was the best album release of 2008. Quorthon must be proud of them (who are not a worship band, but they praise the music done by him).

I agree that By Honour was the best album of 08. Personally I think it's better than any of the top 5 albums.

The top 10 wasn't surprising, trendy, overrated, pretentious crap and Darkthrone.

The irony part was referring to anything as contrived in comparison to Testament. That band started as a pretty bland Metallica wanna-be, and has since "contrived" to add just enough death metal and metalcore flavor to their music to keep moving units. I never really liked Testament in the first place, but their modern albums are like impressionist paintings of metal, made to sell to people who nod along with anything vaguely fast and heavy. It's sleepytime thrash. And contrived is exactly the word I'd use for it.

hmmn. When I posted my votes, I said it was either a weak year, or I just overlooked a load of great albums.

... Looks like it was just a weak year.

There are several stinkers right near the top that I am surprised about. And it's interesting to see that although Opeth (predictably) made the top 10, it was no-one's favourite album.

Thanks for organising this one, MikeyC!

The list will serve me well in checking out some of last year´s stuff. I didn´t take part myself because I haven´t been following new releases for some time...when I tried to put a list together I could only come up with four or five 2008 albums that I actually like! Should find some more from the results, nice job!

I downloaded it a day before I had to submit my list, and didn't really get to listen to it. I randomly bought their self-titled comp that has their demo and EP on it, and fucking loved the band. I really wish I even knew about the 2008 album, because I definitely would have bought it, and if it's anything like their EP, then top ten material :D

Augh, the new Amon Amarth is boring as balls and that Origin album, while okay, is HARDLY the brilliant innovative album people seem to think. See Internal Suffering - Awakening of the Rebel for an example of that style of death metal being played 2 years before Antithesis. I'm sure there are others as well, but I'm not too interested in the style. I actually liked Origin's last album a lot more, it was less digital and had a warmer drum sound among other things.

Opeth and Equilibrium, gross! At least Grand Magus broke the top 20 :|

Guess I should have voted, though it wouldn't have changed much.

I'm actually surprised someone else voted for Asva's new release. Quite an enjoyable album. Better than most of what Sunn O))) has ever done.

A little surprised that Amon Armath's album made it as #1. I was expecting (and hoping) that it would be in the bottom fifteen.

Origins - Antithesis was miles better than their self titled album (which I gave a 30% to, a long long time ago.)

The results of this list don't surprise me at all. In fact, look in just about every magazine dealing with metal, and the lists are practically the same. Add a band here and there, take away a band here and there, switch some bands around.

(Although Terrorizer magazine was the only one that put Septic Flesh's new album on their top 20 list.)

2008 had in my opinion better music than 2007, but also had it's share of disappointments. Tiamat's "Amanethes" anyone?

Looks like I have some music to check out.
