It might not be the *best* but the view from the grassy knoll on the cover of Ministry's cover-song album is one I thought of right away:

One of my favorites from the past couple of years. It makes for a great wallpaper and gives off a haunting and familiar '70s Sabbath vibe. The coloring blends so well with the regal purple in the background, green foreground blending into the black bordering and the whites and greys used as negative space.

Bell Witch's Mirror Reaper is sublime. I'm not a big fan of the music on the album, but I'm always so tempted to buy the vinyl just because it's such an aesthetically pleasing cover.

The original piece makes it even wilder. The contrast works well.

Here's another one I liked from a couple of years ago.

Absolutely! And it's great that they kept the right half of that piece for the back cover.

In my opinon messr Paolo Girardi is one of the very best metal artists. There's a smorgasbord of options I could chosen from but just have a good gander at this Bell Witch album cover and tell me I'm wrong...

Mmm, I think album should have been called: The Fall of Many Crosses and Coffins.

I like it!

A couple I've always been fond of:

Not overly original even, but I've always thought it was fantastic for some reason.

Also always loved this one (picture could be a bit better), and the various alternate versions on different vinyls too. I used to be more of a fan of Aaron Turner's work (I'm assuming he did this in some way), but not so much what he's been doing anymore.

For me, the best album covers are those that perfectly represent the genre/style, the sound, the mood/atmosphere of the album's music/vocals, and the theme of the lyrics (a lot of nature-inspired atmospheric black metal album covers perfectly fit into this category).

When it comes to those that are just favorites, I think my favorite album cover style is the one that was drawn in black (or grey) and white, and with many little details.
Examples:

Few favorites:

Klabautamann's Merkur cover art did the cosmic-starry sky better than anyone else. It's probably my favorite ever on one of my favorite ever albums

Darkthrone have a good number of neat cover arts: the enigmatic Soulside Journey one and the wintry Panzerfaust are probably my favorites

Spite Extreme Wing's cover art for Vltra is stunning and represents well the music of the album, the red glowing sun and the small figures of men look like an epic scene from a greek myth

False- Portent, the same artist as Bell Witch's cover. I'd put this on a wall.

Image

Mokoma - 180 astetta. Most of this band's discography uses art from this artist and they look just great one beside the other. It's far from your typical metal album's cover.

So many amazing piece of art work in our genre. I could easily post 100. While I'm not a huge fan of Bell Witch, I think their cover art is always top notch.

I love the covers of Master Of Puppets and the self titled Sabbath record. No need to share them, everyone has seen them a million times. Here are a few others that came to mind first:

Mgła - Presence & Exercises In Futility (I know Presence is not original to the album, still love it though. Creepy and menacing. I love that the lyrics of the first song on Exercises describes the cover art)
Image
Image

Anathema - A Natural Disaster (fits the mood of the album perfectly, I think)
Image

Opeth - Still Life, Blackwater Park and Deliverance (I kinda have a think for red covers, just like the anathema one above. I think Blackwater Park fits the mood of the record perfectly, and Deliverance looks like something from German expressionism or an old Bergman film, which is MY SHIT)
Image
Image
Image

Darkthrone - A Blaze In the Northern Sky (Invokes black metal feelings of Munch's The Scream)
Image

Also, I love how over the top Tomb of the Mutilated is. I won't post it here because I know everyone has seen it before. It was the first album cover that actually shocked me when I was younger.

Seconding the Blackwater Park love. Travis Smith has crafted quite a few of the best album covers in the late 90s/earlyn00s, including Death's The Sound of Perseverance and a bunch of Nevermore's work.

Always thought Transcend the Rubicon was amazing. Used to look at it for the entire playthrough of the album.

it's just beautiful, I can (and have) just stare at it for hours while listening to the album on repeat. It's my favorite Enslaved album, I'd love to get it as a back piece tattoo, but doesn't seem like it'd be tattoo-able with the ghost like beings that are underground.

Image

Sulphor Aeon's Gateway To The Antisphere, looks like a really bad ass way for the world to end, and that whole just tentacled being from the cosmos rising from the depths of the ocean vibe is awesome, and perfectly encapsulates the band/album.

Image

Portal's Outre, feels like it just perfectly captures the album title, and looks like a painting that you might find on a wall in the Addams Family house

Image

Sleep's Dopesmoker, when you look at it you just know you're about to go on a journey haha. It's really evocative of the album, and the whole stoner priests across the desert sands is a really cool concept.

I'll just select a few, by band:

Leviathan - Verräter, Tentacles Of Whorror, The Blind Wound, and Massive Conspiracy...
(The first of which introduced me to the remarkable work of Zdzisław Beksiński.)

Paysage d'Hiver - s/t, Kristall & Isa, Winterkälte, and Das Tor
(All exquisite oversized digipaks proudly resting on the top shelf of my CD rack. Ditto my Earth And Pillars collection, which gets an honorable mention.)

Urfaust - Verräterischer...

Sorry for the lack of commentary. I don't really know what to say about them, except, uh...I like the way they look! I dunno. They just strike me as very evocative, well done, and in a few cases (I would say Tentacles Of Whorror, The Blind Wound, and Verräterischer...), they fit the music perfectly.

And that Sulphur Aeon that Sevatar posted - holy Toledo! I'm tempted to make a blind impulse purchase right now.

it's a very well liked piece of thick death metal, so you likely wouldn't be disappointed if you're into that sort of thing

The image quality and size suck but all three pictures are very detailed. Very colorful too. I personally like the tear of the god in the 2nd picture. Also, I just noticed the face that is in the background of edge of thorns.

Another one, maybe even my number one is favorite cover is Fatal Portrait. I've owned all of the musical formats for this, posters on my wall, picture LP. I've found myself looking at this cover even when I am not listening to the album. I have no reason why, but it seems to mesmerize me.

Two album covers I used to just stare at when playing the album. Going over every detail.

I always liked this one. I provided a sample of myself crying in a Panera bathroom for this DSBM band (Coffinshade), and they sent me the EP as thanks. The black and white color scheme and the art style is simplistic yet striking.

Image

Atheist always has cool album covers.

Image

Image

And of course In The Nightside Eclipse. Really interesting color choice.

Image

I think I figured it out. I'm a sucker for strange imagery with one dominant color.
