Just uber-solemn folk tunes, really.

Primodial is in a league of their own. Few bands are this good, this raw, this honest.

I was playing To the Nameless Dead the other day and yeah - both of these have to be some of the best shit out there in general. Masterful and thoughtful and rageful.

Budgie - s/t

This oughta be a fun band to explore for 2022.

This album was a pleasant surprise. Glad I finally gave it a chance. Just full of great songs. Adrian should ditch Maiden and concentrate on this.

Lordian Guard - My Name Is Man

Beautiful, just beautiful. Sad song like Winter Tears from Warlord.

Ossian - Szeresd jobban

No idea what this song is about, but this sounds super catchy. Seems like this band even knows how to pull off this lightweight heavy metal (hehe) stuff.

Tony Martin - The Book of Shadows

A few songs into this new album - quite doomy and epic, though the vocal melodies are a bit weird. Not sure if it's bad but it is odd. But Martin himself doesn't sound like he's even aged. The music is cool, some folky parts, nice basslines, thick and muscular riffs.

I'd say I like it. Might even grow on me. An interesting and eclectic piece of work really.

Satyricon - The Pentagram Burns

Its almost got a hypnotic quality to it, I just want to zone in this main riff. I love the little accents and drum patterns.

Testament - Live at the Fillmore
They've released multiple live albums over the years and even though this one is sans Skolnick, it's my favorite by a healthy margin.
Great setlist, and more importantly, great energy.

Tad Morose - Turn to Dust

Hey, these piercing riffs sound pretty wicked. Someone should tell the piercing wearing bastard to quit growling though.

Alice in Chains - Again

The 'is AIC metal or not' rages on in these boards. I would say, AIC isn't strictly metal. They've added more elements to their sound than your typical metal band. Does that make me enjoy them less? Of course not! It makes their music more interesting and opens me up to other music styles.

I don't think he really needs the money anymore and considering he originally quit Maiden when they were great... I'd say he's bored as fuck in Maiden and this is a release for what he truely likes, again considering what he's done outside of Maiden and the songs he's written for Maiden. The dudes a great songwriter and (like Bruce) utterly wasted in Maiden these days.

NP: Earthless - From the Ages
To my ears, this is an instrumental combination of 1970 Sabbath and 1969 Zeppelin. Unbeatable really.

It is indeed. If you like this, you owe it to yourself to check out Kotzen's other material, especially Winery Dogs. Also, his recent (last ~20 years) solo work has been outstanding.

Never listened to any of his other stuff, I'll have to check some out.

Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend

Just kind of speeding through these albums. This is basically as full on metal as Sabbath ever was. Wild and adventurous old metal and rock and roll stylings.

Turbo - Dłoń potwora

This is one hell of an album. Sort of a combination between early 80's Priest, Maiden and some thrash metal.

Satan - Time to Die

''Life Sentence'' is a awesome album!
I miss the concert with them in Bergen years ago, was amazing.

Eyyyyy, nice to see some love for Turbo here! Even though the far thrashier Ostatni Wojownik has always been my favorite, Kawaleria is definitely among their best albums as well. A shame they never really revisited that sound.

Hammers of Misfortune - Trot Out the Dead

This band basically functions in two modes: they're either "okay, I guess", or "YO THIS FUCKING RULES!". The Locust Years is definitely in that second category.

Agalloch - To Drown

An epic instrumental closer to end the sprawling and bleak 'Marrow of the Spirit'.

Skin Yard - Hallowed Ground

It’s good to be back into grunge.

Kreator - Destroy What Destroys You

Hordes of Chaos sounds more than decent and infinitely better than all of Kreator's 2010's output. I didn't get to listen to this as much I should have as Kreator kept releasing and releasing stuff this past decade that it was hard to keep it up. But I've revisited it and it sounds quite nice.

Opeth - Wreath

By Delievrance, Opeth could do no wrong. They mastered the harsh/subtle dynamic at this point. The backing vocals they use from the 9:10 t0 9:50 mark is simply haunting.

Immortal - Northern Chaos Gods

Incredibly solid and strong blackened heavy metal album. Get your petty legal shit straight, you assholes, and get back to it.

I had some vague good memories of Last Warrior too.

NP: CETI - Bieg straceńców

More Polish metal...quite melodic power metal-esque stuff, but I dig what I'm hearing so far.

Dark Angel - Leave Scars

This rules otherwise, but the Led Zeppelin cover fucking sucks.

Tony Martin - This Is Your Damnation

Some of the best parts of this album are the unexpectedly folky bits.

Down - Open Coffins

Very similar here.We call it 'dreich'.

Darkthrone - Voyage To A North Pole Adrift

Starting to ignore the sound that irked me before and focus on the songs here. This one is shaping up to be another high point. This is turning out to be one of my ultimate grower purchases of late.

Nekromantheon - Seven Rulers of Fate

My kinda thrash... they just sort of play unrelentingly feral, insane shit. Vocals are a wonderfully gruff holler without being too black or death sounding, and the guitar tone and writing don't really seem to ape anything from the old days too much. Just a manic frenzy of sound.

Paranorm - Empyrean

2021 was a really good year for prog/tech thrash, and this is one of my favorite releases from last year for said subgenre.
