Nocturnal Depression - ...and Fall the February Snow

Sad and beautiful melodies, been a while since I played this band.

Tristania - Midwintertears

I love over insanely dramatic it gets. It's like a lovechild between Cradle of Filth and Theatre of Tragedy that drank 8 cups of coffee.

Asphodèle - Jours pâles

If you need some melancholic french-spoken post-black metal a là Amesoeurs you should check this out... because Audrey Sylvain from Amesoeurs is one of the two vocalists!

Black Sabbath - A National Acrobat

Jesus Christ, man, this song is awesome. Love the ending.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Egoism
Definitely interested in that tour they're doing where they're playing with a string quartet. Gonna have to see if I can make it.

I love me some good ol' melodrama, and "Widow's Weeds" (as well as "Beyond the Veil") definitely delivers on that front. One of my favorite gothic metal albums for sure. Vibeke's been teasing a solo album for years now and I'm wondering if...you know, that will actually happen.

Imperium Dekadenz - A Cave Called Wisdom

This record is going to be on my year-end list. I love the snare tone so much.

Savatage - Edge of Thorns, off the album of the same name

It's been years since I've listened to this gorgeous, gorgeous song. The piano is fundamental here, but Criss Oliva's molten metal riffing and just... utterly heart-rending soloing truly make this tune. A must listen.

I can't believe you haven't heard this in years. Shame...

Haha, pretty much, man. I dunno, so much music I guess, sometimes things get lost in the maelstrom, even brilliant stuff such as this. But I found it again, so it's going straight into my playlist!

King Diamond "Abigail"

A masterpiece! End of story. But wait... in the last review some loser gave a whole 19% score? He doesn't like great music or is he completely deaf?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but that's just bullshit.

The Dead Beginners - Sinners' Rebellion

Low profile melodic black(?) metal from years back. Has one good song at least: The Wounderable One.

Mercyful Fate - 9

Still a great album. Not a bad song in this. Title track might be the worst.

Stormlord - Legacy of the Snake

Pretty kick ass song. Liking the Mare Nostrum album so far.

Hesychast - Trace Of Breath

Quality black metal with Orthodox Russian style chanting. (And yes, they were doing it long before Batushka.) They're working on a second album which I'm really looking forward to.

Runemagick - Into Desolate Realms

Man, I don't know, this new incarnation of this band has just lost something they used to have. Just sounds so much less distinctive or unique these days and the riffs aren't grabbing me.

Their old stuff had vibrant, epic, intriguing writing - this album seems to be much more monotonous in tone and a lot of it sounds the same so far.

Finntroll - Aldhissla

Gotta love Finntroll. It's been a while since I last listened to an album of theirs.

Morbid Saint - Lock Up Your Children, off Spectre of Death

Frenzied intensity nearly unmatched. I've always thought of this album as a sort of tidier (but no less feriocious) version of Pleasure to Kill, but then again that might just be because of the vocals. In any case, so glad I could finally get my hands on this.

Mare Nostrum is their pinnacle. Their next album Hesperia kind of flounders a little bit but they bounce back hard with this year's album Far. Not as good as Mare Nostrum by any means, but in my opinion contains their greatest song that they've written, "mediterranea"

Legenda - Autumnal

This was buried in our parents' attic. Not going to lie, this sounds quite good, at least at the beginning. The negative review here made me wonder.

The Fall of Every Season - Sole Passenger

Haven't put this on in forever... these are quite stunning, strong compositions. Very intriguing music. Good for a bleary rainy day.

Nile - Vile Nilotic Rites

Have given this a listen a few times. I like it quite a bit. To play these guitar parts and sing/growl is pretty impressive. More than I could ever do.

To me they still sound like Runemagick...but just without the magick! I feared that if the band wouldn't get their act together this time, they probably never will again. I'm still convinced some individual riffs on this record are good, but they're just not used properly - like that 12 minute track with a great burst of energy before it starts to plod along for 5 minutes before the track actually ends. Urgh!

The power of the riff compels you!

Behemoth - Decade of Therion

First song of the album Satanica. They get right to the point from the very beginning. Lots of energy here.

Enslaved - Thoughts like Hammers

I really enjoy newer Enslaved, such a good atmopshere to it.
Structured with great melodies, and the clean vocals are great.

The production is part of it I think. It just sounds like any generic death metal band now. Older albums, like the stretch from DDD to Dawn of the End that was my favorite era of them, always had this really clear sound that was dark without being murky or too dissonant, which gave them a real identity.

Delain - One Second

Still making grade A pop-metal, I see. I thought their last two albums were their best, not to mention this year's fantastic "Hunter's Moon" EP. I'm pretty sure the next album's gonna be great.

Out of the whole Icelandic BM bunch, it's definitely Carpe Noctem that impresses me the most. Fantastic song, fantastic album and fantastic band.

God this is so much better than the newer one I tried... riffs for days just rolling over you like boulders.
