Crimson Shadows- Freedom and Salvation

These guys are kickass, loving the melodies. The Cleans are meh but they work.

Bloodbath - Morbid Antichrist - that's the way I like death metal, greasy'n'crispy
Vallenfyre - Desecration - yeah, shame this great band disbanded...

Two great and unique growlers from one camp! \m/

Underoath- Cries of the Past

Generally not into metalcore, but I read somewhere this album mixes metalcore and black metal. To my surprise, there is parts of this album I feel like I am listening to Sacramentum or Vinterland. Weird, also first time listening to this band. Get the feeling their other albums don't sound like this at all. Overall, kinda like this.

Definitely their best album. You should also check out Undying's album The Whispered Lies of Angels for some killer blackened metalcore.

Angel Witch - Sorcerers

Pretty solid song. The best in the album so far. Honestly, I'm not feeling this album much so far. I'm sorry, I know it's supposed to be a classic. It's not bad, though.

Damn, Angel Witch s/t is probably my favorite pure NWOBHM album.

Journey - Departure

More rockish than Frontiers. Don't know if it's a good thing. I really liked Frontiers.

The Wake by Voivod.

I'm starting to think this is right up there with Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross and Nothingface. Which is quite an achievement for a band this old, and one that has lost such vital personnel within it.

Fantastic album. Wonderful production as well. The guitar sounds great on it, and the mix is well balanced to my (admittedly shitty) ears.

Morgana Lefay - The Source of Pain

Man this album has some bone-crushing riff-work. Great guitar tone too. Charles Rytkonen is a powerhouse.

This sounds much better than ever before - must be the hype about the band's comeback. :headbang:

That's my impression as well, so far.

Voivod is not only the best progressive metal band of all-time IMHO, they continue to be one of the best metal bands ever period.

Rotting Christ - Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy album

When come to think about, this is a great ethno black metal effort indeed.

OH YEAH! it's one of my absolute favorites and it's so much forgotten.. It's nice to see it mentioned!

The vocals and lyrics are just mighty. The title track, Sol Niger, Hand of glory.. so much good stuff that gives me chills!

Chastain - Chains Of Love

Rock-ass shit. Like a more USPM Accept on this album. Just all muscle and grit.

Great album! The title track's chorus will probably never leave my mind :)

Pavor - A Pale Debilitating Autumn

A lot of excess here, but i can't deny the genuine kick assery and creepy undertone of a lot of the riffs. Probably will grow on me

Yeah, it might be my favorite I've heard so far, though the preceding two albums have some more epic tendencies. But I am a sucker for a good old back to basics romp. This reminds me of when I first discovered the old classics.

Conception - Feather Moves

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun
Beautiful, atmospheric song. Nightwish at their peak, Tarja's voice at its peak.

Also, Floor Jansen is an immensely gifted vocalist (see: any After Forever album), so I hope on their next album they use that to their full advantage - they certainly didn't on EFMB.

Yes! "The Black Halo" is probably my favorite Kamelot album, and...well, probably my favorite power metal album of all time, really.

Excalion - Deadwater Bay

This is still a firecracker of an album. Just about perfect and people are really missing out. A work of real grace and style and power.

Very true. I like the drums on SBG. Not just another modern Rando McBlastypants drummer as BH put it once. Sounds fresh to me despite being so old.

On that note

Death - Baptized in Blood :headbang:

He's the Bill Ward of death metal, i love how much feel he has! I still remember my amusement the first time i've listened In the Grip of Winter :)

Arckanum - Antikosmos (full)

I'm rarely in the mood for something like this, but today i's really clicking: cold and relentless

Totally agreed with all that.

It really was DEATH metal back then. So organic, and a natural fit with 70s/80s low budget horror movies. The vocals fit the music. Nowadays, how often do death metal vocals REALLY fit with the music being played beneath it? It seems so obligatory and boring now.

Today's death metal can sometimes sound so wanky and sterile that it really has lost something.

Now that SBG is over, I have moved on to:

NP: Form - I Choose my Own

Not a masterpiece, but interesting if you're into obscure tech thrash rarities. I can see why they didn't make it, but the lead guitar work is some of the best I've ever heard in this style of music.

Suffocation - Infecting The Crypts

If I would play one song to a person who hasn't heard death metal, I would play him/her this song. This encapsulates what's so awesome about death metal - the fast parts, the slow parts, the guitar solos, the drumming. This song is the best example of death metal.

Thick and dense fog over here, time for Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, along with some Of The Wand And The Moon thrown in for some extra flavour...
