Green Carnation - A Blessing in Disguise

I can't overstate how much I love this album. One of those I have a massive sentiment for but it also hasn't aged one bit. Every moment that isn't pure beauty is filled with excellent riffs instead.

Steven Wilson - 3 Years Older

Beyond the perfection of Hand. Cannot. Erase. as a whole, this is just a fantastic piece of whacked out prog rock. It's very throwback with the big instrumental sections and liberal abuse of the Hammond organ.

Satanic Warmaster - Revelation

Nice little EP from SW

Zonata - Buried Alive

Never gave this band much of a chance back in the day. This one is interesting at any rate.

Aeon of Eternal - Niwl

An impressive album with a well-balanced combination of fast+intense parts and slow/mid tempo atmospheric/melodic parts.
Love the powerful harsh male vocals and beautiful sad female vocals as well. ♥

Nothing - In Blueberry Memories

Love these guys. "The Great Dismal" is a strong album.

Armageddon - Embrace the Mystery

This stuff is one thing I'd point to for how good power metal can be as a real artform. Love it.

I like it... it's still got good vocals and some great guitar stuff going on, just in an entirely different genre than they did before.

New Model Army - Horsemen

Regal tribal, almost ambient style stuff but done in their rockish style. Interesting mix.

Coroner - R.I.P.

Much like Voivod, I never really got into Coroner that much because they never go "full thrash". Their music is most likely too intelligent for my tiny OUGH-brain, and I'll most likely appreciate it more when I'm a little older

Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine Fix

The local rock radio metal show played it. Not my favorite Cradle cut but not bad. Not aggressive enough, CoF got a bit too poofy on this record.

Cannibal Corpse - Hacksaw Decapitation

I think Bloodthirst might be their most dynamic of all their releases. It is one of their best for sure.

Armoured Angel- Mysterium

Oh man, where were these guys hiding?! What not the fastest or most pummeling, this has got to be among one of the straight-up heaviest death / thrash albums I've ever heard. Seriously, that guitar tone is one of the most punishing and oppressive I've ever heard, and each riff and groove hits like a 50-ton anvil. I'm utterly loving this.

Autumn Bride - Ravenqueen

This Suzy Pointinger is the best thing to happen to the darker side of sympho/gothic since Maija Liittokivi. She's basically Magali Luyten 2.0.

I disagree...the 80s albums are definitely thrash metal and nothing more. Sophisticated, sure, but not in a prog/thrash way or anything.

NP: Këkht Aräkh - Crystal

This Ukrainian black metal album sounds pretty cool so far. Has a sense of romance to it without turning it into some silly nonsense.

Summoning the Lich - The Nightmare Begins

A local melodeath band, kind of TBDM'ish to be sure.

Going to have to check this out after hearing it on Monday Night Metal last night.

Nightrealm - Chapter I

I like the sound and the atmosphere on this song, it's so sad and cold.
The vocals are also great.

I never bothered to check out their reformation material... I probably should at least give their 2 recent albums a go.

Crimson Glory - New World Machine

The good stuff on Astronomica (tracks 3-7 and then the closer) is legit first rate material from them... might have to review this. Wade Black is actually killer. If he wasn't replacing the even more stellar Midnight this would be revered. Very charismatic, soulful kind of performance.

Rise Against - The First Drop

"Siren Song of the Counter-Culture" is still great imo (I've been a fan of it since it came out pretty much), and I like to pretend they broke up after "The Sufferer & the Witness" so I can keep what remains of my sanity intact. Just want another fast-paced melodic punk album from these guys instead of what essentially amounts to Creed-but-political, is that so much to ask?

Angel Dust - The One You Are

One of the loudest things I own and it's like a fucking tank rolling over you. Probably the band's most confident piece of work. Sublime.

Angel Dust - Inhuman

Sort of the streamlined, more poppy version of them, but absolutely ruthlessly heavy in spite of that.

Border, Bleed and Enlighten releasing in the span of two years is one of the crazier runs I can think of in metal, up there with early Iron Maiden. Could never get into Of Human Bondage much though, I guess swapping out the guitar player really threw their sound off. I should give it another try, I might have compared it too much to that God-tier trilogy right before.

Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe

Been into this since its release in 2008, it became my soundtrack to moving away from home. Still holds up, big shame they lost the singer after. Heavy and poppy at the same time, much like that Angel Dust album come to think of it

Of Human Bondage really isn't terribly different from the others; it's probably the weakest but still has some really great songs. "Inhuman" and "Unreal Soul," along with "Unite" are up there with anything they did. Though some other songs feel a bit 'been there done that'... but there was only so much material from them so it isn't like it was too oversaturated.

Crimson Glory - In Dark Places

Vicious Rumors - Axe and Smash

No idea why some dislike this album so much. It's not as heavy as the previous albums, but still retains enough metallic sensibilities for me and Carl Albert sounds awesome as always.

Serenade - The Serpents Dance

I like the vocals, and the album is quite interesting musically as well, but it gives me a strange feeling when I listen to it.
For me, it's similar in feel to the song "Einst War Es Mal..." by Verdunkeln: it's when you think that doom/death, death/doom, and black metal songs/albums are supposed to be sad/dark, and the songs have the harsh vocals that sound exactly like what you expected to hear, and the sound of the music itself is quite sad/dark, but there are some 'upbeat/dance-like' drum/guitar rhythms on the songs that seem a bit too unusual and 'out of place' in these genres/styles of metal music.

Edit: I've just realized that some songs by one of my all-time favorite bands Aphotic also have similar repetitive mid-tempo rhythms (the songs ''Failure'' or "Sea", for example), but I tend to listen to this band pretty often and I really enjoy the mix of rhythmic and atmospheric components on their songs so I think that I've gotten used to their songs. :)

Some bluesy work by Adrian Smith and Richie Kotzen. Nice guitar work. Smith is a pretty good vocalist.

Sitting with a view of the beach and jamming this while working - summertime stuff really.

Evergrey feat. James LaBrie - The Beholder

Comfy, expressive, top-notch modern prog balladry. I like it! Evergrey always know how to write a catchy tune and JLB is very warm on this one.
