Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Brother My Cup is Empty

Trying to get back into these guys; it had been a while. He always writes these goofy melodies that somehow become compelling.

Fast, relentless, not sure I like it though.

This song probably might just be my favorite and I really love the atmosphere.

Seems like we have the same though here, amazing stuff.

Blind Guardian - Time What Is Time

Now this seems a lot more intersting then the tales album, maybe it takes some ''time'' to grow.
Killer refrain and guitar work!

My advice to you is to cut out the fat and listen to 'No More Shall We Part' on repeat. That album is a masterpiece.

Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great Apocalypse

Shamelessly false black metal? Maybe, but this song fucking kills.

Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times

First listen to anything before Volcano. A lot more straight up black metal for sure.

Nick Cave's by far one of the most important artists to me as a person and with a fairly eclectic and often spectacular output it's hard to pick favorites. Though my top tier would consist of Tender Prey, Henry's Dream, Murder Ballads, Your Funeral... My Trial, and Let Love In.

listening to this utterly off the chain mathprog https://zevious.bandcamp.com/album/lowlands

My favorites are 'The Good Son', 'Let Love In', 'No More Shall We Part', 'Nocturama', and 'Skeleton Tree'. I struggle with his early, raw stuff, and The Birthday Party does nothing at all for me. It's been a long time since I listened to his whole discography (with the Bad Seeds, I mean) though, so my tastes may have changed since then. He's covered so much musical ground that he's impossible to pigeonhole. Also, he's one of the best lyricists who ever lived.

I'll have to try his later stuff. I really love 'The Firstborn is Dead' - such a weird, raw, dark little album of twisted Americana. Your Funeral My Trial and Tender Prey are really good too - bombastic and harrowing. And Henry's Dream sounded very polished and had some beautiful stuff on it. I heard Murder Ballads a long time ago and I should maybe revisit that one too sometime.

Usurper - Perpetual Twilight

Still addicted to this album. God this good.

Listening to Branikald at the moment. For some reason I think Russian black metal and novels are just exceptional. I would name the album and song but it is in Russian on my iPod.

Demon Bitch - Hellfriends

Getting pumped for the Legions of Metal fest here in Chicago. Also listened to a bunch of Cirith Ungol today. Need to familiarize myself with "One Foot in Hell", which I haven't listened to nearly as much as "King of the Dead" and "Frost and Fire". Also need to go through non-"Master Control" Liege Lord. What a lineup.

Panopticon - Black Soot and Red Blood

Really gripping stuff. I love some extreme metal blended with other genres - if anything it's the main purpose of it for me, to channel various feelings and evoke things by incorporating a variety of other influences, etc. This is of singular purpose.

So every night now I sit down and pull record off the shelf and play it through while reading the lyrics sheet and having a smoke.

Last night was Black Sabbath - Tyr

I've had this and EI for a while but never really dug into them. After actually putting some attention into this I have to say fuck I've been holding out on myself. This is full of classic Iommi riffage and lead work, great drums by Cozy, and fucking awesome vocals by Tony Martin. I get why some people will say he was the best Sabbath vocalist.

Burzum - Dunkelheit

For some reason, Varg is the only white nationalist fucko in metal that I have no problem enjoying his music. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to Burzum, and Burzum is still absolute top notch black metal.

Jeff Buckley - So Real

'Grace' is a nearly flawless album. Only 'Eternal Life' doesn't fully work for me. It gives the album an angry, energetic dimension that it wouldn't have without it, and it must've been a great live song, but it comes off as too jarring coming from the otherworldly beauty of 'Corpus Christi Carol' and going into the eerie foreboding of 'Dream Brother'.

Speaking again of Nick Cave, I really never got into 'Murder Ballads', and I fucking hate 'Stagger Lee'. 'Where the Wild Roses Grow' is a good song though. I like it best when Nick Cave goes for melancholic balladry.

Eternal Life is a great song, and to be fair, there are really loud and chaotic parts of Mojo Pin that sort of foreshadow that part to come. But I understand your trepidations as it relates to the album's sequence.

Grace is a masterpiece no question.

The Good Son is my favorite, but I'm also a fan of Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus. It's a nice sprawling beast of louder/mellower styles with the obvious great lyrics.

NP:
Phlebotomized - Deformation of Humanity: The cover looks like the cousin of The Eels' Beautiful Freak. Interesting stuff with all that heavy keyboard usage, but the dry boring death grunts don't really work for me with this kind of music. A more dynamic growler would've been better.

Ufomammut - Stigma

One of the heaviest songs in metal, and IMO the riff halfway in is one of the best metal riffs of the 2000s.
