Sodom - Persecution Mania

There's some evil thrash.... \m/

Slayer - At Dawn They Sleep

This whole album really is incredible. This thing just drips menace.

Bathory - Pace til Death

Is this black metal or brutal thrash? The guitar tone reminds me of Ride the Lightning while the furious riffing reminds me of old intense thrash like Kreator. Yet the black metal vocals over the top.

Emperor - Sworn

I think I like the arrangements and mix on this record more than Anthems. its still chaotic and busy but not not totally overwhelmed by the blasting. Riffage is easier to pick out.

Beast in Black - From Hell with Love

Pretty lame and boring. Just unimaginative songwriting and no real substance. Shame the singer from Wardrum is wasted on this kind of stuff.

Autumn - Phantom Limb

First album in almost a decade from them. This sounds pretty good so far - moody and atmospheric. Marjan is still great.

Mayhem - In The Lies Where Upon You Lay

Fuck this is ripping! This is the new master version.

Like the atmosphere and the riffage and drum interplay.

Nocturnal Depression - Fjaer (Spring)

Love th main riff in this song, never get tired of it.
Been ages since I have listened to this band, but I did a lot when I went to school 10+ years ago.

Emperor - Of Blindness and Subsequent Seers

I'm thinking that my problem with Emperor is more with Anthems than the band at large. this song was pretty nice. Nice change up and the end.

It's always great when someone inadvertently backs up an observation in one of my reviews that people get pissed off about. But the correct answer is black metal

As soon as they kick it up in track 2 it screams RTL to me. Not in structure but that tone is pretty close IMO. I don't know if I've read your review on it but I'll go check it out.

Hammerfall - Legacy of Kings

Too bad they never managed to recapture the essence of their first two releases.

Agalloch - Our Fortress Is Burning, parts 1 & 2

I've been listening to this while taking walks probably 20 times since last week. It's fairly simple, even by Agalloch standards, but every second is spent building up the atmosphere before exploding in the end. Those tortured screams over the beautiful melody and the churchbells (?) in the backgroun makes it one of the greatest by Agalloch.

Yes! Love the buildup to the album title drop in part 2. If only they ended the album properly after that rather than that extended nothing called Part 3...

In the Silence - Ever Closer

Damn great band that never did anything after their one album, yet they're still listed as active. Wonder what they're up to.

Bathory - Nordland I

Haven't listened to this in years probably. So good. "Mother Earth Father Thunder" has got to be one of the most METAL songs of all time. Crushing.

Trivium - Entrance of the Conflagration

Honestly, The Crusade is not that bad of the album. It's thrash metal as written by people who still wanted it to be played on the radio and listened to by their metalcore loving fanbase who only really knew thrash as being that style Metallica used to play 20 years ago, and the lyrics are admittedly pretty goddamn bad, but there are still a ton of cool hooks and riffs all throughout. I think a lot of the flack this album got at the time was mainly from the swamp of angry internet metal gatekeepers that just went "How DARE they?" at the idea of Trivium of all bands trying to do thrash metal.

Yeah, I really didn't like that attitude either. I admit I kinda slept on The Crusade for this reason even though the singles for it were more or less how I thought modern metal should be played. It's pretty much the same shit Greta Van Fleet's going through right now.

"Ugh I'm so sick of Nickelback and everyone who sounds like modern rock these days"

"Ok here's a Led Zeppelin clone, especially since Led Zeppelin's been broken up forever, and just about everyone likes Zeppelin."

"YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT. STOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOPRIPOFFRIPOFF"

I really wish I had fascist control of metal's fanbase sometimes.

Death - Symbolic: Absolutely has tremendous riffs!

(Earlier) Deicide - Legion: I've always thought the debut album was the best but Legion is probably better.
