Paradise Lost - Shade of God

This is quickly becoming my favorite song off Draconian Times. That chorus is majestic.

My wife and I watched Lords of Chaos about these talented, childish idiots and I DL'd this one, which I missed back when: swell shit!! More to my tastes than DMDM.
As for the flic: well-done as well.

Iced Earth - Iced Earth album

I've always ignored this one because of "poorly" vocals, but man I was wrong. Excellent musicianship as the songs slide one into another. The last song "When The Night Falls" is a fuckin' monster!

Looks like I'm a scumdog for life now. I was supposed to be listening to various new records but all I can do is crank more GWAR.

Definitely a really underrated album that deserves more attention in their set lists. Everybody makes a big stink about Gene Adam, but his only flaw is that his shrieks are a little silly sounding, and the first song happens to feature a lot of them. But after that his performance is really good, and he has lots of excellent moments in the melodic parts of Written on the Walls and Curse the Sky.

Sodom - Persecution Mania

Revisiting a favorite band from when I was first exploring metal. Really well done transition from their sloppy black metal stuff, while still retaining the punk feel on some parts.

Dragonforce - Heart Demolition

I feel like this goofy 80s video game thing is what they've always tried to be. The vocals actually sound the best they've ever sounded too - he seems more confident.

Nocte Obducta - Und Pan Spielt Die Flöte (Desîhras Tagebuch - Kapitel II).

Holy shit, I never knew something this could even exist, especially coming from a lesser-known black metal band. I just randomly clicked on a video for Winter: Dezembermond because I liked the band's name and the video's thumbnail, and then I got blown away.
This is a proggy black metal band that makes very long songs with an amazing atmosphere and beautiful melodies. They remind me of Moonsorrow, but without folk elements. I have been listening to them for a few days only, but they are already a candidate to become my new most favourite band.

Heavy Load - Death or Glory

Oh buddy. Gonna bust a "heavy load" to this one. Catchy choruses, fluid songwriting, just the right amount of 70s swagger mixed into the metal. The guitar is my sword and I'll fight until I die...

Magnificent song! I used to use this particular one as my gym warm-up theme XD

Ram - Blades of Betrayal

This is pretty good old school metal. They go for the throat... chunky guitars and a lot of that fuck-you, rebellious energy.

Definitely in my top 20 of 2017. Not metal by any stretch, but highly recommended to fans of Anathema's quieter moments. Actually more notable for its keyboard lines than guitar, I think.

I was so disappointed by this. The opening track, "The Exorcist" might be one of the best songs he has EVER written. I was truly blown away by that as the lead single. Then the record came out, and I found most of it to sound like adult contemporary music. Then the song "Soho" grew on me a bit, as did "The Silent Flight...", but The Exorcist is the only one I've ever gone back to.

I think it's way emotionally darker than adult contemporary, though it is soft. For me none of the individual songs stand out as a huge breakthrough, but I find almost all of them to be above average. I was more pleased with this than _The Optimist_, for instance.

Delain, _Moonbathers_

Trying to educate myself on recent Delain ahead of seeing them live tonight with Amorphis and Anneke van Giersbergen. I'm geared up to see Anneke live, whom I've never seen perform before (my fault for falling out of music for about a decade). I always enjoyed Delain's _Lucidity_ album and thought Martijn Westerholt was really what made Within Temptation work before he started Delain.

Anyway, this album has some head-nodding melodies but doesn't blow me away. Not terribly thrilled when they go djenty in certain tracks. Will compare notes when I see them live.

Iron Fire - One More Bullet, off Beyond the Void

Just really respectable, no frills heavy/power metal a la the more rocking Grave Digger moments. This is a real workhorse band and I respect them a lot, even if I'm not really a fan.

Iron Savior - Unification

I have been listening to this album for 13 years and it never gets old. That is a masterpiece in my book: Speed/Power metal that is as good if not better than Painkiller and as epic as any power metal without being overly pompous. It is certainly the best album in this band's discography, while Iron Savior's albums are pretty much uniform in style the quality between albums can change quite a lot: I was also listening to Titancraft and the difference in quality is very clear.

As I had just rated Abigail, as I am putting together my favorite albums list and this is indeed among then, the 14th one.

Metallica - Ride the Lightning

It's been years since I listened to classic 'tallica. It holds up well, this which is my favorite album of theirs. It sounds quite different from what I would classify as thrash metal like Slayer, Kreator, and Sodom, instead this album sounds more like a faster version of Judas Priest's Stained Class with better production. As it is very catchy and melodic, almost power metal.

Warning - Watching from a Distance

This one has been waiting for the right moment, since I haven't been feeling that "doomy" for some time. Holy shit this works. Easy to drown yourself in these songs. No need to even listen to the lyrics, it's all in the music.

It was an earlier form of metal by guys who liked a lot of 70s rock - makes sense it sounds that way to me.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana

Some cool trippy melodies as usual - a musical journey. Interesting guitar playing here.

Vader-Impressions in Blood.

Killer. Little bit slower compared to their usual stuff, with tracks like Predator and The Book. Predator meanders a bit with it's repetitiveness but the Book is awesome. Field of Heads and Shadowfear are both standout tracks on this album. Not their best work by far(De Profundis and Tibi et Igni are my favorites) but a worthy album.

Destroyer 666 - Unchain the Wolves

That's the real deal right there. Some black metal that sounds closer to traditional heavy metal but without sounding melodic like Mercyful Fate. Kinda reminds me a bit of Celtic Frost.

Totten Korps - Slaughter Nocturnal Butcher

Solid. Very solid. Wish the drums sounded better, but that's pretty much the only problem with this riffy, evil album.
