Black Sabbath - Trashed

Broke out the Born Again vinyl. I remember hating the production but its really not that bad. Nice main riff on this and Gillian wails.

GREAT album! the remastered CD version sounds a bit better, also!

100,000th post in the thread right there!

Mercyful Fate - a Corpse Without Soul

For some reason I neglected to give their s/t EP a listen until recently - King Diamond's vocals are a bit rough here but still impressive.

Scythe - Witchcraft

One of the bands I just discovered(or recommended too). Nice blackened death metal style with some nice melodic touch. I was told this is Germany’s Opeth and I guess there’s some resemblance. Pretty good stuff.

Hibria - Millenium Quest

Huge favorite from back in the day, proving that power metal can have huge riffs AND be massively melodic at the same time. This particular song's solo (the second, longer one) is one of the best ones ever.

Try Eternity's End's second album for the rightful continuation of this sound... same singer and the music is even kind of similar.

Eternity's End - Into Timeless Realms

Some kinetic as fuck, shred-friendly shit. I like stuff like this where it's ultra techy but anchored by strong melodies ultimately.

Belvedere - Heartbreaker

"Fuck Art" by The Dirty Nil is probably still my favorite punk album of this year so far... but this new Belvedere album's giving it a run for its money.

I have heard that one and it’s really great, the follow up to Defying the Rules I wanted all along really. It’s funny how Eternity’s End got Iuri on vocals and at the same time made their whole style resemble that Hibria album, which the first EE album didn’t sound nearly as much like. The bass solos, the particular style of sweep picking etc, similar in very specific ways but still has its own character too.

NP: Hatebreed - Burn the Lies

Much like Slayer and Motörhead, this band gained enormously for appealing to metal and punk/hardcore fans both. Early Hatebreed has a cool raw edge and I prefer Jasta’s Max Cavalera-ish low bark to their later stuff.

Panopticon - Moth Eaten Soul

Probably the most brutal track on the new album! I love the use of double-bass drums as the song reaches its climax/conclusion.

Vital Remains - Let Us Pray album

Underrated album. Heavy and evil for its time. I wonder why they agreed to change their style to less riffs, more repetitive brutal approach. Benton maybe?

Blood Revolt - My Name In Blood Across The Sky

Nemtheanga is so brilliantly over the top on this whole album. One of the greatest metal frontmen of his time.

Panopticon - The Embers At Dawn

The emotional depth in this is breathtaking. Stirring and enveloping music too as per usual. Loving the album more and more each listen.

Yeah, I wonder how much of the writing Iuri did on it. It's sort of a more sophisticated take on Defying the Rules. Hoping Iuri sticks around for album #3 from them.

Helloween - King for 1000 Years

Songs like this really show what power metal can be capable of.

Ocean Machine - Regulator

It really is remarkable how timeless most of Devin Townsend's work is. Almost nothing he's done feels detrimentally "of its time" (for example, City is very obviously a 90s album, but it's not so 90s as to be distracting and take away from the overall product), and everything remains as timeless now as when Devin originally made the albums in whatever year he made them in.

I had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I thoroughly enjoy Dokken. But now I admit it to everybody

Yeah, Dorian's vocals are mostly miss for me...God knows how many times I've tried, but no...

Slayer - Silent Scream

There was a real machine-gun precision to everything about Slayer by this time... same with Metallica by the late 80s, they really ushered in these new sounds that were totally removed from the jammy rock and roll of the 60s and 70s.

Jag Panzer - Generally Hostile

Still probably the best metal album I know of. 14 years strong and it hasn't waned for me. Pure electric power and muscle.

It's as gorgeous as I remember. When thinking about it, every time they took on something completely new they'd never done before, it turned into gold.
