I never heard any Asphyx. Keep hearing good shit about them so I ought to try em.

Sanhedrin - Lights On
Sacred Oath - A Crystal Vision
Riot - The Privilege of Power

Long day. Drinking some beer and jamming some hard nosed US metal. Sacred Oath, man - so fucking good.

There's just something really satisfying this late at night about some cracking, fiery old school heavy metal.

Boris - Absolutego

Totally unhinged drone by the masters of the genre. If all drone would sound like this, the subgenre would be much more appreciated… I think.

Morbid Angel - Covenant

I got the album when it was released. Have listened it a lot during all these years. BUT, now after some time listening to it, and I do not remember hearing all these parts...

No, it's not forgettable. It's one insane album.

Sweet - Breakdown

Love the contrast between those hard rocking verses and that uplifting chorus.

Another stunning album from these incredible guys

I can’t believe I put 30 years to like them

Depressive Silence - Forest of Eternity

Amazing synth music. The swelling during the most epic parts really make me emotional.

Accept - Balls to the Wall
Danzig - How the Gods Kill

Hadn't played Accept in a bit. I forget how fun this band was. This album and the Herman Frank debut make them icons even if their new stuff kinda sucks.

I have to disagree. They're good albums but the only place to start is the beginning with the iconic The Rack LP and then the mighty Last One On Earth LP. While I'm at it chuck in the rather cool Crush The Centaph EP.

This. Their reunion era material is quite a bit stronger than their early stuff, which is quite good as well.
“Incoming Death” is a modern masterpiece and the doomy parts really propel is to another level. Great band.

I take it that you're a late comer to the band, coz only a late comer would say this.
"Quite a bit stronger", what a load of bollocks.

Tiamat - Clouds

I have no idea why this album is so good. It sounds like a mix of Asphyx (Speaking of the devil) if they had softer vocals and Opeth (Ghost Reveries era).

As a matter of fact, I am. I never heard their music in the 90s and got into them right after “Death…the Brutal Way” was released. I suppose my judgment isn’t marred by nostalgia.

Well guess I'll try some of their shit later on - seems like there's quite a variety.

Lalu - Yesterdayman

This and the Shadrane album are so polished and saccharine, but Lalu's melodic sense really just brings it home. Brilliant prog. Some of this shit on this album I remember quite clearly even though it's been years. There's a real sense of the unconventional, and there's a lot of seeming outside influences brought into the prog metal umbrella.

Oh yeah. Very late. I didn't hear Asphyx until several years ago and I wasn't into it. I think it was something from Last One On Earth and I wasn't wild about it. Late last year or early this year something from Necroceros came up as a suggestion on youtube and my opinion of Asphyx changed quickly.

Hard Rock Sallinen - No Lies

Very early Finnish hm, and it's cool. Things were very different back then.

That was some terrible quotation work back there BD. As for ya judgement, well it may not be marred by nostalgia but it's definitely marred.

NP: Asphyx - On The Wings Of Inferno
Soulburn - Feeding On Angels

Asphyx became a bit of a revolving door when it came to members after MVD left but as long as Eric and/or Bob (preferably both) was involved it would have merit. Wannes Gubbels of Pentacle handles the vocals and bass on this one and the 1st Soulburn album (which let's face it is a Asphyx LP) and both albums kick ass.
Speaking of Pentacle, I'm finally taking a rather late deep dive into their catalog. What I've heard over the years has been fuckin great, just one of those bands that kept slipping through the cracks until now.

Asphyx - The Rack

Pretty much the archetypal death metal sound so far. Crushes. Some really great, go for the throat fucking riffwork.

Volbeat - Wait a Minute My Girl

I'm starving for more songs like this and "Die to Live." They didn't have nearly enough!

Metallica - Lux Aeterna

Fuck these guys owe more than few drinks to Diamond Head and the NWOBHM. First listen and it's not what I expected that's for sure, kinda like it, but time will tell.

"Last One On Earth" is absolutely the best place to start with Asphyx. I like their post-reunion stuff (especially "Incoming Death"), but the classics are classics for a reason IMO... and yes, "God Cries" is good too!

The Offspring - (Can't Get My) Head Around You

I've been on a (skate) punk kick lately.
Also, "Splinter" by The Offspring is such a confusing album. It has some of their absolute best and worst songs - the true definition of a mixed bag. Naturally I made a playlist of the good ones... which includes the first three songs, "Race Against Myself", this one, "Never Gonna Find Me", "Lightning Rod" and "Da Hui". Remove the bad joke songs and this one would be a fantastic EP.

Diamond Head - The Coffin Train

Man more old AND new school bands ought to listen to this for pointers... nothing outside the box really, but strong riffs, great charismatic vocals, a definite cohesive epic feel. It's almost fucking flawless. I actually do think this is better even than the debut by a little.

Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated

Classic dm album, nothing else to say. Felt the need for riffs.

Can't say I hear it at all. I can think of a record that sounds like early Tiamat meets Asphyx, though; Scum's Mother Earth.

That Asphyx album fucking rules! Their best one along with Last One on Earth. Don't like anything since the band reformed; they definitely lost their touch once Eric left. :(

Disgusting, yet oh so satisfying.

I guess it was a bad take after all. :boo: But those were the two bands I had in mind while listening to the album.

Death the Brutal way is the best Asphyx followed by Desthhammer

And I’m old Asphyx fan,I love all phase by them with Embrace the Death and on Wings of Inferno that in my opinion are better than the Rack a good album but nothing more.
Last One on Earth is another story…

In topic I’m listening Voivod Phobos

Another masterpiece by canadians

Soen - "Imperial", "Lotus", and "Atlantis" (live reinterpretations of some of their songs)

Woh....how have I overlooked these guys for so long?!?!? These albums are amazing.
I recall listening to their debut after learning that Martin Lopez of Opeth was a founding member, but not being at all impressed.
But the songwriting of these two studio albums is spot-on. Modern prog-metal with absolutely infectious melodies and perfect clean vocals...just a great overall package.
