Cranial Contamination - From the Absence of Existence

This is some quite solid slam. Nice mix of tremolo-picked riffs, slams, and some other supporting brutal death metal riffing with no particular style of riffing being leaned on as a crutch (e.g. how some bands can write catchy slams but everything else in the song is pure filler).

Witchking - Witchking (EP)

This is Deathcore so far on the Metal side of the Metal----Core spectrum that it's borderline "Death Metal that happens to have breakdowns in it" (hell there are barely any in the EP), and quite good at that. And solos! On nearly every song! Wow, incredible. That Deathcore became Suicide Silence worship and not this kinda weird Death Metal offshoot is fucking lame, honestly.

The thing that makes this -core the most are the just...incredibly fucking weird vocals (thankfully, no pig squeals). The lows are standard Death Metal growls but the highs(?) are this...bizarre whiny scream that sounds like literally nothing I've ever heard before, and the vocalist will constantly switch between both pitches during a line and he like...fucks it up a lot of the time and it just sounds so weird. Like the first song, Dead Root, has the line "Go back to what i know, so i can say i tried" but he switches from low to high on the "what" part and he holds the word for like half a second so it sounds like "GO BACK TO WwWwhhhhhhhhaaaAaaaAaaAaaAat I KNOW".

I sound like I'm slagging off on him but I actually love his weird-ass highs.

Motorhead - Overkill

The epitome of metal songwriting and energy. If I should choose top five tracks in all metal history, this tune would surely be there.

Blut aus Nord - MoRT Chapter 2

Man, MoRT sure is a shitty album :P It's strange, because I love the weird and twisted material on The Work which Transforms God the best, all those alien atmospheres and industrial/electronic music. Maybe the difference is that The Work... was still a metal album at the core, with riffs and songwriting as the focus, instead of pure weirdness. And MoRT uses the same fucking weird drum beat for the entire album. I like black metal! I'm used to 4/4 beats.

King Diamond - Black Hill Sanitarium

The Graveyard was my least liked KD album for a long time, but wow this grew on me with time.
Now I love it.
Such a killer creepy/dark atmosphere.

Runemagick- Evoked From Abysmal Sleep

This album went under my radar. It's actually pretty amazing imo. Really surprised more people don't talk about this band.

Killer band, lots of awesome riffs.
Some don't like the vocals, why is that? I think they work well.

Unleashed-Grom

definitely more elaborate guitar work in comparison to Midvinterblot, As Yggdrasil trembles, and Dawn.

Bruce Springsteen - Stolen Car

Holy shit. Bruce is (including metal) my favourite artist of all time, but I've been burned out on him for almost 2 full years. Just listening to some individual tracks on random tonight for the first time in a long time. This one is a stunner.

Leviathan - Scar Sighted

I'm late to the Leviathan party, only really having engaged with the debut before now. Love the debut, and this is pretty dang good too. The brutal low vocals and downtuned almost groovy riffs are great. But still manages to be very unsettling with the jangly bits and weird shrieks/samples/spoken words.

On my second listen of the new Brainstorm now. Some nice riffs scattered throughout this new record.

This new Into Eternity album is pretty good musically, chock full of outstanding playing, and Kiernan does an excellent job in her first outing with the band.

A shame it sounds like a demo and not an album proper. I mean this is muddy and muffled in a way that is reminiscent of the original mix of Enemies Of Reality. I was able to look past that then, and am looking past it now in order to recognize that it's a well written and played album (much like the aforementioned Nevermore album), but this album should be more sonically potent and powerful than it currently is.

EDIT: It's also kind of lame that "Sandstorm" and "Fukushima" are on here, albeit in re-recorded versions. These songs are 6-7 years old and were written/recorded with specific purpose tied to current events at that time. They are excellent songs, but those events have long since passed which makes these songs feel out of place on this album. So you're only getting six new songs from this band after a 10 year gap between albums. Granted, five of those songs are lengthy metal tracks with a ton of great playing/performances and interesting ideas.

So yeah, kind of a mixed bag here.

The Graveyard is a masterpiece IMHO.

I usually don't go for his atmospheric "filler" songs in-between the rockers but "Sleep Tight Little Baby" is a extremely well-written IMHO.

The Graveyard is tragic because there's a convincing argument to be made for it being his shittiest album musically, but personally I think it has the best story out of all of them.

That it's extraordinarily boring and all it has going for it is some creepy atmosphere but a total dearth of everything else that makes King so good? It's just not good. Keep in mind I also just flat out don't like anything he's done since like 89/90 as it is so I'm in a minority already, but for as boring as every King album is from the 90s onwards, The Graveyard is the boringest.

Carcass- Surgical Steel.

My roughly 4th all-the-way-through listen to this album and I still like it alright. I don't blindly defend it like some, but it also doesn't deserve the unfair shitting-upon so many others like to dish out. It's basically more listenable and less boring Heartwork (that's right I fucking said it); just cool, riffy melo-death with those awesome harsh high vocals Jeff Walker does so well.

All else I can say in conclusion is "Bloodlust...MOOOOOOORRRRDD!"

Skull Fist - Bad For Good.

This is some retro shit I can get behind. Great hooks, and that four-on-the-floor beat the drummer gives you for just a FEW bars at a time makes you want more and more. This song is so fucking fun, WHAT THE HELL.

Soulfly - Ritual

Don't mind the occasional nu-metal/groove influences which plagued the eariler Soulfly albums. Might be the best since "Enslaved".

Leviathan The 10th Sublevel of Suicide
A great album, now 15 years old or so.
The final two tracks are still among the finer pieces of music, in any genre, from any period, that I have heard. As many good albums as he has released since, none truly bear comparison. IMO, as always.

Keep of Kalessin - The Black Uncharted

Been avoiding (or forgotten) about this album for many years now, as the debut and sophomore are incredible and underrated second tier Norwegian BM albums from the 90's (Through Times of War is actually a minor masterpiece). This is pretty great overall - aside from the almost complete departure from sound of the first two records, but this has some truly epic, powerful moments. Might have to buy a copy finally.

The ep, Reclaim, which they played almost in its entirety Live when they opened for Dimmu... a few years back, is my fave. 'We have just folded space from Ix; many machines on Ix. New machines.'
***Off-Topic: We just finished the 18th and final episode of Lynch's Twin Peaks, the Limited Series Event(or Return.)
As goofy, brilliant and uneven as any of this master's works.

Motorhead - 1916

Probably my favourite Motorhead release, and one of the best title tracks ever to be put to wax.
