Benediction - Neverwhen

The most recent Benediction album is a great comeback release with Dave Ingram again providing lead vocals.

What a weird thing to say, though.

NP: Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase

Trying to let this sink in but it reeks of pretentiousness, I mean more than the usual SW stuff. Gotta say I love how the first proper song starts with a Rush-like dynamic.

Iron Maiden – The X-Factor
Iron Maiden – Virtual XI

Whoopsie! There goes the singer and there goes the singing. Apparently, Bruce has a (very) bad cold. Get well soon! Unless the band intends to sound like a Derek Smalls side-project minus the humour.

Corrosion of Conformity - Damned For All Time

Before CoC regressed into a stoner band, they made their most metal album in 'Blind'. Though just a one-off, Karl Agell fit like a glove as their singer on this release.

Can I Play With Madness is one of few Iron Maiden songs I often skip, but only when listening to SSoaSS, it hinders the album atmosphere and progression, it's totally out of place; however, I do enjoy it in live albums (still not among my favorites tho)

Can I play with madness is fucking rad, the criticism I always hear about that song is fucking bogus, what's really that different in comparison to a super catchy song off something like port royal, why cuz it was more popular I genuinely don't understand, it's not the best on the album but fuckin only the good die young is about the same song in style and quality but people only shit on that one.

Iron Maiden – Brave New World
Iron Maiden – Dance of Death
Iron Maiden – A Matter of Life and Death
Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier

Yay, Bruce is back in shape! How many guitar players are there now? You just can't count them as their legs are long and they're as quick as foxes, and the lights and changing backdrops are rather confusing. They seem to settle in a nice classic rock groove now. The songs are feature-length epics that all sound the same and are about the stuff Maiden tracks have always been about. "The Nomad", "Paschendale", "For the Greater Good of God" and "Starblind" are some of their best tracks ever. I mean just listen to "Paschendale"'s mid-section. That section alone has more passion and drama than most other bands' entire discographies.

Just about every metal band I ever heard of. I seriously can't think of anything that's as intense as that section. Some early Fates Warning tracks come close in my book but 00s-Maiden had the musical maturity required for this kind of intensity where each instrument complements the other in a way that makes you visualise a river that just carries you away: uphill, straight towards the summit.

Night - Crimson Past

This is quite light as heavy metal goes. But the song is good so what the hell. Has this lightly sad and relaxed feel, which is very pleasing.

This was a really interesting album - they dug into some really old guitar styles you rarely hear anymore.

Horrendous - Idol

Brilliant stuff; I always think they'll sound a little too fake-smart when I go back, but they still keep hitting in ways a lot of new DM doesn't for me. Just that atmosphere and these winding, complex song structures.

Children of Bodom - Kissing the Shadows

First time I heard Bodom, I didn't like them as they played too clean and sounded too polished. But later on I grew to appreciate them for what they represented which is the polar opposite of the raw, necro sounds I was listening to at the time.

Metal Church - Congregation of Annihilation

As usual in post-1993 Metal Church, nothing bad, but nothing truly remarkable either.

Solstice - To Sol a Thane

Here's a band I don't really play enough either... this newer album is pretty great, what a feel for the big massive sweeping riffs and the atmosphere. It's kind of like one long 47 minute song - a massive undertaking. I always liked New Dark Age a lot too. Should buy that sometime.

Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls
Iron Maiden – Senjutsu

They're finally getting old, as anyone would if they recorded a career's worth of albums in two days. Still, "If Eternity should Fail" is a great track in the vein of "Somewhere in Time", while standouts like "The Book of Souls", "The Time Machine" and "The Parchment" display a definite penchant for definite articles. When geriatric Maiden are switched on, they're still bright. When they're not on, their tracks seem to comply with a building-block concept (old ideas => hat => draw), but even when they're switched off they can entertain you with something new, e.g. the weirdly fascinating wild west horse rug named "The Writing on the Wall". It's not even overly similar to "Wanted Dead or Alive".

My Dying Bride - The Barghest O' Whitby

They do well with these longer, involved pieces. One of their finer moments.

Also, excellent use of violin to color the mood throughout. Evokes some of their earliest measured brilliance.

I wish they'd make a new album already. Their many demos and EPs are a rich trove because of how organic they always manage to sound with what you'd imagine is a limited doom template. New Dark Age is utter brilliance.

All pretty good but I'm waiting to find some new DM that has the songwriting quality of old Morbid Angel, The Chasm, Entombed, Vader - feels like a lot of new bands are missing something of a spark. Ascended Dead sounds pretty cool. Certainly feral as fuck. That and Ulthar have a really mathy, chaotic sound that's interesting, but doesn't really have the more visceral blood-pumping feel I'd like. Too much dissonant type shit for me I guess. I'd like something a little more clear-sounding. Sanguisugabogg is ridiculous... a cool massive sound but kind of tiresome after more than 10 minutes or so.

Check out VoidCeremony, their new album in particular is really good. It's more of a progressive death metal album but it still has plenty of sharpened teeth and doesn't overstay its welcome.

D.R.I. - Five Year Plan

Metal and hardcore melds seamlessly into a new sub-genre - crossover! I remember spending endless days and nights listening to this on my boombox, wearing out my bootleg cassette tape copy.

My only problem with To Sol a Thane was that the vocals sort of sounded like the guy didn't know how to write a good vocal line. Kind of the Atlantean Kodex problem of just riding over the mountain of riffs epic-ally without much in the way of good hooks. They've never had a particularly good vocalist but the vocal lines on New Dark Age were better.

First listen of a few new releases.

Metal Church - Congregation of Annihilation/ I really liked that first single and Lopes vocal performance but not sure about the album as a whole.

Elegant Weapons - Horns for a Halo/ I like this.

A lot of those bands tend to make the vocals sound as much like an ancient barbarian warrior as possible. Sometimes at the expense of catchiness. Atlantean Kodex did great with the vocal lines on White Goddess, but yeah the other ones can fall into this a bit. The Solstice guy does have a marvelous powerful voice though.

Blood Star - Fearless Priestess

Maiden - "Seventh Son"
Dusted off this classic this morning for the first time in a loooong time. This one continues to hold up, as nary a weak moment appears.
"Infinite Dreams" is one of my fav Maiden tunes, to be sure.

Oh yeah - definitely remembering why this was so good. What an enveloping, atmospheric production, and the songs are just so well crafted.

Yep, and the title track doesn't drag for me. I spun it the other day and what a great album. Around that epic you have little played but great cuts like The Prophecy, which is a track I really dig. Infinite Dream is a amazing, and The Evil The Men do which is in my Maiden top 10.

Heard this already when it sort of released on youtube like a year ago. From what I remember it wasn't as good as the debut, but giving it another shot now.

Metallica - Now That We're Dead

Been revisiting this one comparing it to 72. I love this song, great groove to it and I love the drums. The drum accents as it starts off are great.

Absolute crusher. Scratches that Evoken itch. Cannot wait to hear the rest of the album when it comes out.
