Visions of Atlantis - A Journey to Remember

As the most unlikely pirates ever, they sing an awful lot about buccaneering. Catchier than a corona-laced catchy-thing, though.

Ancient Dreams just has slightly better vocals, guitarwork and songwriting than their other albums - just all around a fucking classic.

You can't really mess with those classic Candlemass albums and Messiah's vocals own ye all.

Vektor - LCD

Fuck what a tune. That is how I like my metal songs to open...with scorching leadwork.

Pentacrostic - Some Enigmatic Faces Reflected in the Mirror

Death metal full of ominous atmosphere; this sounds like something I'd expect from The Chasm's debut, but this came out even earlier!

He was such a great talent. Shame he doesn't seem to be doing anything now. But those riffs are really the crux of it.

Ingested - "Dead Seraphic Forms"

I'm calling it: their upcoming album, Where Only Gods May Tread, is going to be my favorite release in a long while. Brutality that sounds like the guys really don't want to be seen as a deathcore act anymore and have been cranking old school Hour of Penance.

Strike Anywhere - Extinguish

Uh oh, in another punk mood today.
I used to listen to this band a lot when I was like...15. I don't know why I stopped, they're really good. Glad they're putting something new out this year because my interest in them has certainly been reignited.

"Wanderers" is admittedly one of my favorite power metal albums of last year. Is it anything particularly inventive? Not necessarily, it very much reminds me of "Wishmaster" era Nightwish stylistically, though it's more sinplistic. It's just...well, super catchy and fun to listen to, and that's honestly all you need sometimes.

His absence from the scene (barring rare live appearances) is damn near criminal.

Darkthrone - Rust

Probably peak "mid era Darkthrone". Perfect guitar sound. The first 3 minutes and the last riff are the best. The middle part with the fast drumming is a bit awkward. The beginning is the perfect doomy crawl, while the climax is one headbangable riff.

Yup. I'm sure he is still fucking good even now.

Cirith Ungol - The Frost Monstreme

This new CU album is just so unpretentuously 'them.' It's just the band doing what they do and it's badass.

VoA is one of those bands who started off incredibly mediocre and with each release became slightly less so. They've had a nightmare of a time keeping lead vocalists, but I'm hoping that Clementine stays, her voice is really intoxicating. Their sound is still a little light and fluffy for what I want out of power metal (even the 7-string guitar doesn't help matters), but with her on board I've found myself listening to them more than I otherwise would have.

It's so weird to think of a band who didn't release an album until 2003 as "old-school", but I love HoP, so this has me curious about checking Ingested out.

To/Die/For - Like Never Before

I've always envisioned this song as being played over crazy ballroom dancing as done by people in masquerade attire. Feels quite fitting, if you ask me.

Tiamat - Altar Flame

While I certainly wouldn't call Sumerian Cry a great album, it does possess a certain charm. That blues break on ''Evilized'' is quite something, too!

The only real edition of this is the first edition. The remaster sucks

Warning - Watching from a Distance

Takes me to an another place. Not to be listened too much in the summer. It will turn into a funeral summer.

Thyrane - Black Harmony

Not sure about their other stuff, but this demo is great atmospheric black metal.

Paradise Lost - Jaded

Revisiting my favourite albums by these legends today. I forgot quite how utterly beautiful Greg's solo on this one is. That man has so much control over his instrument that it's a joy to behold.

Paradise Lost - Beneath Black Skies

This instantly became my favorite song from In Requiem upon hearing the album for the first time the other day.

Katatonia - The Winter of Our Passing

The new album is decent enough I guess. Apparently this was supposed to be a Jonas Renkse solo album but he decided to make it a Katatonia release instead, and you can hear it. The songs are mostly straightforward and based around the vocals, and it doesn't have the more intricate and progressive, carefully crafted style of The Fall of Hearts. I prefer the latter.

Atomizer - Grave Disturbances

First time listening to Atomizer. Picked this up recently for about £3. Maybe one of the less mentioned bands from Oz.

Perfect for boozing.

I hated the Behemoth cover if I'm being honest so I kind of had to wash the bad taste out of my mouth with the excellent original. Besides, it's apparently World Goth Day or something, and this era of The Cure kinda fits.

I like most of their output, though I'm most partial to Pornography.

Pornography is my fave too. But so are Seventeen Seconds and Faith.

Yeah, Pornography is GREAT.

OH, you mean the Cure album! Yeah, that's good, too.

Caligula's Horse - Dream the Dead

This is my kind of prog already - sort of spacey but heavy soundscapes and a real emotional singer. How did I miss this before now?

Pharaoh - Rats and Rope

Still a mainstay for me after 12 years. Iconic, towering power/trad metal for the new millennium.

Melvins - Lovely Butterflies (from Electroretard)

This is pretty much my limit for how much a band can screw around before I start to lose interest. Although tbf I'm listening to Melvins because I wanted something screwy.

Pharaoh - Sunrise

Been a while since I went back to this one. Not as good as the next few but there's a lot of fun with the more aggressive moments. More straight-up USPM and Tim Aymar and Mat Johnsen fucking kill.

I have absolutely zero knowledge of Tristania past the first album. This song makes me want to delve deeper into them now.

The Distillers - Sick of it All
Still in a punky mood. Love the bass work on this song, and the entirety of their "Sing Sing Death House" album.

"Rubicon" isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, but it's still a mixed bag so I don't necessarily suggest starting there - some good songs (like that one) and some not so great ones too. I think the following album "Darkest White" is a lot better. Also, the two albums after "Widow's Weeds" - "Beyond the Veil" and "World of Glass" - are excellent and I very much suggest those.
