Unless my math is wrong, 46 and 2 do indeed add up to 48.

But yeah, if i remember correctly it's a reference to some dumb theory that humans would evolve and get an extra pair of chromosomes.

"Overnight" is also about how long their fame lasted before grunge ran them out of town.

NP: The Absence - "This Consuming Nocturne"

This album is moving its way up my list, and has a shot at the top 10. I don't think it's quite as good as their first few albums, but it's even better than I remembered from my earlier runthrough this year.

Dokken - Kiss of Death

It's a shame that Dokken gets lumped together with other '80s hair metal bands. They were way better than most of those clowns. George Lynch can shred as shown on this track and Don Dokken has a great pair of pipes.

Warrior Soul - We Cry Out

One of the underrated bands from the early '90s is definitely Warrior Soul. The problem with them is that it's hard to market them for a specific audience. Their music was labeled as 'alternative metal' but they're not as heavy as Tool or Helmet. They sound more hard rock to me but their lyrical themes isn't the usual 'cock rock' that usually persisted during that era so they didn't fit in that scene as well.

Agreed. They were/are 10 steps ahead of their supposed peers. Even the latter era material without Lynch is surprisingly great.
And Lynch’s entire career up to the present day is almost flawless.

Screeching Weasel - Thrift Store Girl

"My Brain Hurts" is my favorite album by this band... but "Anthem for a New Tomorrow" does give it a run for its money. A close second, at least.

Blood Fire Death-esque black metal...it may not be as epic in scope, but it's certainly epic from a stylistic point of view.

Damn, I thought these guys called it quits a long time ago. The Serpents Lust EP from 2009 is still played several times each month here, and have been since it was released. I really can't wait to dig into this album later tonight.

I like some Dokken, but they have a lot of rock and balladic songs, so that's probably why.

Unfortunately, the new album doesn't sound like the EP at all.

NP: Varathron - Hellwitch (Witches Gathering)

Recognizable riffs, epic arrangements...doesn't get much more Greek than this.

Baroness - Yellow and Green

I thought I'd give these guys another try, since they're a great band. If you don't know them, they're a progressive rock kind of thing. Maybe some sludge metal influence.

Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare

This was one of the first Iron Maiden songs I checked out, and for kind of a stupid reason - I noticed it had the same name as a Misfits one (I was mostly into punk at that time). Two very different but very awesome songs.

Agreed, but it's quite bizarre that fans and critics say that about every '80s hair metal band, be it Tesla, Cinderella or even Poison. :-P

Now playing: Frank Blackfire – Back on Fire

Good little thrasher (7/10). For the most part, it's like a refined and slightly more melodic version of old Sodom. Blackfire is not an extremely accomplished vocalist but he gets the job done and sounds like a mixture of more recent Angelripper and e.g. Milo (Deathrow).

Napalm Death- "Amoral".

Love going back to this album now and again. I'm not the biggest NP fan around, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album and in retrospect I wish I had placed on my year-end top 10 for last year.

Cool to see a bit love for Warrior Soul. Awesome band, truely powerful and unique songwriting. I really dig the first 3 albums.

This is a bloody great album. Prog Thrash masterclass.

Yeah, it has Disturbing the Priest and Zero the Hero. The fucking title track. Still I'm interested about that remix. Hope it comes.

Agreed on both counts, Warrior Soul is just amazing and Bionic Swarm is in my top 10!

Kory Clarke of Warrior Soul described the band as "rock n' roll with serious lyrics".

NP: Deathhammer - Rapid Violence. (Sargent fanboy here).

Is it bizarre, though? Being that “hair metal” was so immensely popular, it appealed to non-metal fans who simply crammed all the bands of the era into one homogenous lump. But that was partly the bands’ faults as so many wanted to ride the coattails of something so successful and adopted the genre’s look, etc.

With that said, I don’t recall Poison every being considered anything *but* hair metal. In fact, they were widely, and almost universally, seen as the “ground zero” or perfect crystallization of “hair metal”.

Lord - Legacy

I don't know how you'd say power metal was weak if you hear this fucking album. This shit is mindblowing.

Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be

MOP is hard to see for what it is at times with how big this damn band is, but there's a real artfulness to it all, something that is obvious in how it became so classic. Very well done. Moments of odd beauty contrasting with crushing riffs and aggressive ugliness. Well rounded.

Probably best song on Death or Glory for me honestly, it's just got a lot of feeling to it.

Baazlvaat - The Bay of Arvon

Another of the really good modern acts. Thinking this is inherently inferior to the classics of the genre seems insane to me. Fluid, creative stuff.

Autokrator--Qualis Artifex Pereo

I downloaded these guys a while back and knew I liked them but never really listened enough. Pretty brutal stuff, but not as ground breaking as stylistically comparable bands like Dragged Into Sunlight, Lord Mantis, Mistress, etc.

Abigor - Midwintertears

I've been listening through the Abigor demos and this one stuck out. Early version of Weeping Midwintertears. I usually find Rune's "girly screams" funny, but here he sounds insane. I love the contrast of unhinged screaming with mellow and soft music.

Exodus - The Years of Death and Dying

Probably the worst track on the new album. Sounds like a scrapped U.D.O. B-side.

Jethro Tull - Live At Tanglewood 1970 (included in the new "Benefit" boxed set).

Clearly a band hungry and on fire! This gig blazes and is a showcase for Tull's greatness.
