I will have to agree with you both - "Better Off Dead" is one of Bad Religion's best songs and one of the best punk songs in general. Anathema also did a pretty damn good cover of it, though it's quite different from the original.

I love that cover, as well. It's like a totally different song. I can't even compare them or say which one I like more, because of that.

Cannibal Corpse - When Death Replaces Life

I really like Gore Obsessed. It's actually one of my favourite CC records. I like the more primitive approach on some tracks, like this one.

Kreator - Golden Age

I was completely unaware that Kreator had made a gothic metal album in the 90s. Even more surprising is that it's actually not that bad.

The Stooges - TV Eye

This is such a fucking good album. So raw and filthy and free-spirited.

I Miss My Death - Chortiv Tyagar

These guys used to suck, and now they put out a new album and they're great.

Summoning - Like Some Snow White Marble Eyes

Gotta return to the genius of this album every once in awhile. I feel like every time I come back I end up hearing something new that I hadn't heard before.

Cradle of Filth - Nocturnal Supremacy

I've been spinning the "V Empire" EP a lot lately. Both their most aggressive release and the one where their gothic influences became even more prevalent.

Great record! i like also how it manages to get a little experimental while mantaining the rawness:
Dirt is one of my favorite songs ever

Insomnium - Across the Dark (full)

The guitar work is surgical and gets really interesting at times, but i'm not loving the album as a whole

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

They really, really pulled it out of the bag for this one. The songwriting, instrumentation, vocals, production and pacing are all on point for basically the entire album. It is truly one of their best albums, and a decade defining moment for metal.

Indeed! I don't hear it talked so much but every time i come back it's a more than nice surprise. Lightening's first riff comes directly from the heavens

Have you checked out the Sleeping Gods ep? It's close in quality

Ragnarok is a must listen IMHO, i think it's their peak and their most mature. it has a modern, glossy sound, but the interplay between vocals and counterpoint guitars it's a sight to behold

I have it in my collection. Remember listening it few times and not feeling it. But maybe a new chance!

EDIT: Ragnarok sounds good. How I remembered not liking this at all... :???:

Thor - Lightning Strikes Again

Unchained EP is a total winner in my book.

The parts at the end where it starts to get jazzy knocked me out of my seat the first time I heard it. Just so crazy.

Stratovarius - Forever

Episode still has a real atmosphere and effect to it. Well-composed as hell.

My Dying Bride - A Sea to Suffer In

The interesting thing for me about The Angel and the Dark River is that it's really not that stylistically dissimilar from Turn Loose the Swans. It's just the latter album's dirging death/doom without any growling.

I've never really been able to get into Insomnium. I've heard a number of their albums and like them, but they're almost never something I feel like going back to. I'm sort of hoping they'll click at some point, since it seems there are a lot of people who consider them the pinnacle of modern melodeath. Maybe it's for some reason the Finnish melodeath style doesn't generally appeal to me as much.

Job for a Cowboy - Relinquished

Doom is the EP that really was the blueprint for deathcore as it came to be understood as a genre in the 2000s. Helps that it's one of the only good deathcore releases ever.

Celestial Season - Soft Embalmer of the Still Midnight

Sounds more focused than the band's debut. Not a masterpiece but any means, but the weepy parts weep better and the rocking parts rock out more. :p

Savatage - Taunting Cobras

Man, I neglected this band for way too long. Picked up the album Handful of Rain in a second hand CD shop some 15 years ago and it was fairly influential on my tastes at the time but it would be years till I actually explored more of their discography and found so many great albums. Revisiting Handful of Rain now and it still really holds up.

That's a great album, and I wonder how it would have gone if Skolnick had more involvement. If I remember correctly he just played solos that Criss Oliva had already written and maybe done demos for before his untimely passing.

I remember liking Handful of Rain a lot, though not as much as Edge of Thorns. I never liked anything they did after it though.

Marko Hietala - The Voice of My Father

This is an almost achingly soulful album, but really experimental and fresh too.

Darkseed - Can't Find You

Been on a serious gothic metal kick lately, and this band popped up as a suggestion. Really enjoying it so far.

I've not, sadly. There are many, many Enslaved albums I've yet to check out (I'm mostly familiar with Axioma, Hordanes Land and their twin 1994 albums) so an EP will totally have slipped under my radar.

The Ocean - Pelagial

Honestly? One of the few post-metal albums that came long after the genre's peak in the mid '00s that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as a Somewhere Along the Highway or a Panopticon. The songwriting (including the usage of leitmotifs), the flow of the album, the separate but related concepts of the lyrics and the instrumentation and how they intertwine and how they're conveyed, the production, the performances - it's all A grade. This is a captivating and emotionally stirring listen as is, but then that little thing called 'sentimental value' pushes it over the top. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

Process of Guilt - Motionless

HOLY FUCK!!! I love my 90's doom/death metal and plenty of recent albums in this style are good, but this album from 2006 kicks some serious ass so far. These grinding riffs, melancholic leads and beasty vocals are all reminiscent of the style's prime years, yet this band seems to have an identity of their own. I'm rather impressed.

Converge - Under Duress

Punishing, brutal soundscapes. Just stretching everything to the limits. A wild tornado of sound.

Katatonia - The Future of Speech

This is very quickly becoming my favorite Katatonia song.

Anubis Gate - Andromeda Unchained

Still holds up... it's super dense, well-done prog with almost nothing to complain about.

Mirror - Apollo Rising

This and Demon Bitch are probably the closest I've heard to replicating the classic metal sounds from newer bands.

Agalloch - Black Lake Niðstång

I still think this album's production/sound is not very fitting, but it can't ruin the amazing songwriting. This song has some heartbreaking passages.

Black Dahlia Murder - Dawn of Rats

I like this album when I listen to it, but I'm not sure its got staying power. Where new stuff by Vader was just dug in my brain right off the bat this I struggle to recall a riff. Most listens before a final judgment are needed.

Perfection. A mastery of songwriting, riffcraft and atmosphere.

Oh I bet. They're such an emotional band. Whenever I play them it's such a catharsis.

Paradise Lost - Fall from Grace

This is a good nighttime album.
