Van Halen - Take Your Whiskey Home

Goddamn this is a DLR + EVH showcase of everything I love about Van Halen. Eddie's tone....fuck!!! And DLR is delivering just as hard vocally.

The Offspring - I Choose

Holy hell, this one's catchy.
Probably the best of their more blatantly pop punk tracks. Extremely infectious chorus and nice little guitar solo. Also, "Ixnay on the Hombre" is just generally a pretty damn good album - the only track I don't like is "Don't Pick it Up".

Triptykon - Grave Eternal

Finally changed upon a copy of this in a shop, and wow I'm annoyed I missed out last year ! AOTY material even if it is a live thing. Really special stuff.

Advocate - The Final Hour (1995)

Just discovered this. US Power/thrash with INCREDIBLE riffs. That verse riff is driving me completely insane.

Lorna Shore - To The Hellfire

The breakdown at the end is so fucking dumb, I love it.

Antiquus - A Night at the Theater

This is such a weird little album but the guitar playing is so fucking good.

Hail Of Bullets - ...Of Frost And War

Wicked album and probably the closest we'll ever get to that mythical MVD fronted Bolt Thrower. In fact I like this more than Those Once Loyal.

Perversor - Cult of Destruction

More people should know about this album, it's a nice throwback to the meat and potatoes era of black/thrash from South America

I don't like it more than Those Once Loyal, but otherwise I can agree with this statement in general.

Listening to the new Union Gives Strength album by Galneryus. Really loving the excessively fast breakdowns. It's really cool to see how things change from their live formats half a year prior to actual release. There's something wonderful about that new sound. And this seems to be Galneryus at its most uplifting in a long while, the closest I will ever get to rediscovering this band.

Job for a Cowboy - March to Global Enslavement

Been revisiting a lot of classic myspace deathcore shit for the best of the 2000s poll, and it's been an absolute blast. These guys were total riff salad, but definitely a lot more engaging and fun than the average brutal/tech DM band. Really hope they can put out their fifth record soon, and maybe even play some shows again. I remember seeing them play Summer Slaughter in 2012, the crowd went absolutely apeshit for them. Miss those days, it gets me misty-eyed and nostalgic, ready to complain how all these retro-OSDM caveman bands don't have half the energy :old:

Legend - From the Fjörds

Not bad. Not as heavy as I expected, more on the progressive side. Drum solo and all. Still liking it.

Merciless Death - Evil In The Night

I consider this album to be one of the best Thrash releases post 2000

Pharaoh - After the Fire

Haven't heard this in ages... getting ready for the new one tomorrow. They already had a pretty good idea of who they were even back on this first one. These aren't the best songs they did, but there's a succinctness and aggression to this stuff that's fun anyway.

Children of Bodom - Hexed

Played this right after Follow the Reaper recently, not a big drop in quality if you ask me. Way better than I remembered the newer CoB stuff being, albums like Halo of Blood just lack any real hooks for me, but this one rocks just fine. Good to see they went out on a high note, and I did like the Bodom After Midnight song that was put out as well. "This road's gonna kill me" - chorus of the first song on the album, that's just eerie and sad. RIP Alexi

Sonata Arctica - Wolf & Raven

What a wild ride this album and this song especially are... I think there's a few too many ballads and instrumentals on this thing and the closing 11 minute song never was my favorite. But this is a cool piece of work for the sheer exuberance and showcase of what the band was about. Young bands are entitled to that. And Tony Kakko I think is one of metal's most unique writers - he never does what you expect and this song, with its numerous parts in an under 5 minute runtime, really show that.

Propagandhi - Less Talk, More Rock

This album is very blunt and to-the-point with its politics. I may not agree with every single word (though I agree with most of it!), but I respect the brutal honesty. Punk as fuck.

I don't know if I'm disappointed that this isn't a Billy Idol cover or not...

This is pretty much the only album I like from these guys. Bury The Light had some ok songs, but man this album rips.

I always felt like Be Gone got the shaft compared to their other ones, which was a shame as it's one of my favorite metal albums ever. Interesting.

Sonata Arctica - The End of This Chapter

Magnetizing, heart-renting melodies... great stuff.

Solitude Aeturnus - Alone

Their final album and what a awesome album it is. 5 out of 6 albums sit in the 90% range on MA, a testimony to how consistently great SA are. Huge monolithic riffs and soaring emotion drenched vocals telling tales of despair and doom, nobody does it better... nobody.

I think it's a classic case of the small sample of reviews on M-A not being representative of the actual consensus of the album. Happens a lot here, particularly for bands that don't attract a ton of reviews. I think most (including myself) consider Be Gone their best, though there are certainly some who vouch for The Longest Night or Bury the Light... neither of which I can fault.

Pharaoh - The Powers That Be

After a nine year wait, it's finally here... I really don't want to say this, but my first impression after a few songs is that it's a bit of a step down. Will obviously give it time to grow, though.

Did you get it from their bandcamp or something, or did it leak somewhere? I got the CD from Cruz del Sur and it'll probably be another few days.

Bury the Light took a few spins to grow too, I remember thinking that one wasn't as good as their previous ones as well. I'm sure I'll at least like it pretty well if nothing else. And re: Be Gone, yeah you got a point there. There's a faction of users here who just aren't fans.

Pharaoh - Forever Free

I think Spotify releases by region, so since it's already Friday here, it's uploaded in full. Also, nice to see someone actually listening to After the Fire. It's been sadly overlooked in favor of their later stuff since it's not quite as developed, but it has some of my all time favorite tracks by them (that one, the title track, and "Now Is the Time" in particular).

Pharaoh - Freedom

Okay this is clearly just an unused High Spirits riff. Come on guys lol

edit: thankfully the next song was much better, exactly the kind of layered and complex songwriting I was anticipating going into this. The album finished strong. Gonna listen more and see where it lands for me.

Ah yeah that would explain it.

Yeah After the Fire is a bit better than I said in my old review all those years ago. "Heart of the Enemy" is maybe my pick alongside the title track - that shit just rocks out with venom and spite.

Bathory - Nordland I

After a series of, to put it mildly, disappointing albums Quorthorn dropped the mighty Nordland saga on us! Whammy! Glad he went out on a high.

Pharaoh - The Powers That Be

Sounds heavier, more confrontational. Very intriguing. I like this so far.

edit... halfway through and I keep neglecting work because shit keeps happening on this one. Really very good I think.

It's sort of like a metal protest album. This and the Sleater Kinney album have some real good lyricism.
