Blind Guardian - Traveler in Time

I think "Tales From the Twilight World" might be my favorite Blind Guardian album - great balance between the speed metal of their first two albums and the power metal of the later ones.

Vlad Tepes/Belketre - March To The Black Holocaust

I can see why this split is considered exceptional amongst black metal fans.

Burden Of Grief - Desaster And Decay

You know, for years I thought the MP3 I had of this was just incorrectly typed.

Solstice - New Dark Age

Still an absolute top 10 album for me. Man I wish there was more stuff like this. Hear sometimes about supposed imitators but, much like Manilla Road imitators, none of them really sound like their idols. Nothing gets the more cosmic, Lovecraft-adjacent side of Robert E Howard better than Solstice. Most bands either go full Conan or full Lovecraft. Solstice is the overlap (I think in "The Phoenix on the Blade", the first Conan story, Shub-Niggurath is referenced, maybe other Lovecraft entities).

I really hope we get the promised next Solstice album ("The Plough and the Forge"?) sooner rather than later. I'm confident Rich Walker won't release anything that isn't perfect by his standards, so not worried about it being rushed; I just hope he achieves that sooner than another decade or two!

Vlad Tepes - Anthologie Noire

Currently, I'm on Under the Carpathian Yoke. Sounds very fast and raw.

Heavenly - Wasted Time

This is definitely one of the best songs on Virus because of the huge chorus. I do like Heavenly, but never quite to the point of worship that it seems like a lot of people do.

Gates of Ishtar - Where the Winds of Darkness Blow

Melodic and catchy.
Good!

Forteresse - Métal noir québécois

Right now I'm on the first song but I have a feeling that the rest of the album will get way better.

Analepsy - Atrocities From Beyond

I don't hate it, but good lord, BDM/Slam is the kind of thing that is just exhausting to listen to for longer than like four songs. I'd like to see a Slam band incorporate some slight melody, some guitar leads, some solos, just SOMETHING in between the endless blasting and retard-slams. Yeah that wouldn't be "TOTALLY BR00TAL DUDE" (and believe me I like me some dumbass slam/breakdown thuggery) but fuck it, endless brutality just becomes extremely mundane and boring without some stuff to break it up and contrast it with (Ingested is pretty good at this).

Melechesh - Sphynx

Weirdly I kind of forgot I bought this years ago. This fucking rules. Just a slaughterhouse of riffs.

Kawir - Ares (The God of War)

Nice calm start, and then kicks into a mid paced epic atmopshere.
Really enjoy this band.

Paysage d'Hiver - Der Baummann

Nice slow black metal, those fat riffs around 10-11 minutes are always a treat.

Oblivion - Oblivion

On first listen of the new album. Not bad at all, but still not reaching the heights of their 2013 debut.

Grave Digger- Tunes of War.

Weirdly enough, for this often being considered the band's most popular album, I often forget its existence. There's a lot of good melodic speed metal on here and the guitar tone is just thick.

Was just listening to that about an hour or so ago, never heard of em before now. Just saw the name on the latest releases list. It was ok, reminded me of Cannibal Corpse a lot, especially the breakdown in Devoured by Vermin

Just finished Rottrevore - Iniquitous

Don't listen to it all the time, love it every time I do, great songs, heavy atmosphere, better than most other death metal honestly.

Bathory - The Return

Sort of has a strange atmosphere in my opinion. I guess maybe it's the production.

Burzum - Det Som Engang Var

Takes me back to high school when I’d listen to this and explore the woods.

Epic grimness. I think this album is better than ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ.

Marduk - The Sun Has Failed

Musically pretty good, lyrically no idea what they are saying yet. I guess at first I assumed everything they did was like the jackhammer of PDM. I was wrong. Though some of the tracks I've been listening to have been brutal. Kind of bouncing around thier discography.

Fudge Tunnel - "Kitchen Belt"

When I first heard Fudge Tunnel back in 1994, I thought they were an anomaly. Their music was a smoldering brew of disparate sounds ranging from industrial to sludge to hardcore and even alternative rock. I submitted them for inclusion here in M-A years later and was rejected and told that the band was 'not metal'. I was pleasantly surprised later on to discover that they were finally included here in M-A. But it doesn't matter, whether they are metal or not, Fudge Tunnel still plays great, unique music that more people should be exposed to them.

Got the new Herman Frank on. Seems re-energised after the last album (which didn't click with me). Enjoying the soloing and impressed that a guy who is nearly 70 years old is releasing this sort of music.

Good to hear this.

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

Haven't listened to this one in several years. The musicality and wild, experimental nature make it classic.

NP: Bessie Smith - Keeps On A-Rainin'

a perfect song for fucking 20 degrees celcius in the middle of the winter after it snowed last week for the first time in five years. ugh

Aosoth - The Inside Scriptures

As far as French BM goes, they are right up there with all the greats. Always loved the atmosphere they conjure on their records, oppressive, yet very melodic at times.

The definition of riff-driven doom/death metal right here. What a band.

Dokken - Tooth and Nail

I love this album so much. It's gotta be one of my favorite heavy metal albums of the 80s. Thanks Freddy Krueger for getting me into these guys!
