Pearl Jam - Once

been splitting my time between listening to PJ and old-school thrash recently (up to Riot Act and Hellwitch respectively - there's something of a musical dichotomy for you!)

But this song is so so fuckin cool, one of the best on Ten easily and that's saying something.

Pantera - 'I'll Cast a Shadow'

It may not have brought any new ideas to the table for the band, it may not be very well produced, it may not have the best instrumentation or lyrics or vocal performances but I still keep coming back to Reinventing the Steel anyway - I've always sort of liked it.

Asphyx - Scorbutics

Wish I'd checked out their later stuff sooner, I've been missing out big time. This is sick!

High Power - Comme un Damme

This might be my favorite on here - just so unexpectedly mournful and delicate. But the rest is very good, quite raucous and heavy stuff. 80s metal (and earlier than that) was fun because you could go from party rock songs to ballads about suicide in the same album. Tonally strange but sometimes, as here, it can be endearing.

Stratovarius - Fantasy (Orchestral)

Been in the mood for them lately - wonder why they haven't had a new album in 5 years. Been trying some of this compilation from a few years back. This may be my favorite song they've done and this orchestral version is nice and soothing.

Enforsaken - Tales of Bitterness

For some reason, I've been totally in the mood for stuff I've been bingeing on more than a decade ago, primarily melodeath in its different variants. This fairly obscure American band popped to mind, and boy am I having a good time or what. This one's a good example of a well-composed and driving mid-tempo song. It helps when you open with a rocking heavy metal riff too, and of course I'm a total slut for cleans this reminiscent of Mikael Stanne's.

5 years? No way, their last album was in...goddamn, it WAS 5 years ago...

Seems like all the PM bands are sort of slowing down. Helloween has taken some time off for their new three-singer Pumpkins United and Edguy is on hold, according to Sammet.

Tyrant - Valley of Death

Such a graceful, heavy thing.

Unholy - Time Has Gone

From The Shadows is a good record. It might plod along a bit (truly, I find most doom records do. I know that's literally what the genre is about, but yeah). I love the way it sounds. It sounds dated, and I mean that in a very endearing way.

Unholy has always been my fave. Every album!

Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill

Doesn't sound as good as I remembered. Still some good riffs.

Vardan - The End of Spiritism Obsession I

The main riff is actually quite addictive.

Save Ferris - Under 21

Fuck me in the ass, I think I'm in love.

Ensiferum- Little Dreamer

A better version of Old Man which I love. Much more upbeat.

Kampfar - Huldreland

I wish Kampfar still had this style of writing. Just letting the music breathe and the atmosphere setting in. The general hook/melody is impossible to not like.

The Red Chord - Hour of Rats

Arguably the best song by one of my favourite bands. I consider this a perfect blend of brutality, intensity and melody.

Manilla Road - Avatar

Mark Shelton was such a fucking legend. This song is nuts.

Cloven Hoof - s/t

It's amazing that these guys have kept such a consistent sound overall despite the musician changes. This is some kick ass, occult early metal. Right between old Maiden and Priest with a dash of what Mercyful Fate would later perfect. I am glad to be spending this time really appreciating this killer band now.

Venom - Cursed

I ignored the non-Cronos venom album my entire heavy metal career. I listened to Temples of Ice for the first time about 5-6 weeks ago, and it's pretty good. Checking out The Waste Lands now.

TEMPLES OF ICE and PRIME EVIL are both AWESOME!!!!!!!

Paradox- Pangea.

Just great no-frills melodic speed / thrash with an edge of noticeable technicality. It's been too long since this record; where's our new material Paradox?!

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom

Love this band; saw them when they came to London back in November and they're easily the fucking loudest band I've ever witnessed aside from Motorhead. I hope they come back one day, seriously imposing live show.

Testament - Titans of Creation

My first playthrough of the full album. It is excellent. I am very happy with this one, although Testament is one band that almost always delivers.

Usurper - Hypnotic Void

God I need some angry, cathartic, blasting shit and this should fit the bill.

Liege Lord - Master Control

Amped up power metal with almost a thrash kick to it. Joe Comeau is fabulous and the production is marvelously beefy, the performances so damn energized.

Fatal Embrace - Shadowsouls' Garden

Wow. I've been listening to Swedish Melodeath for almost 20 years and somehow I've never heard of this band. It's like an alternate, dreamy take on The Gallery.

Striborg - Syncopated Pandemonium

I'm on a Striborg kick again these days.
Must be because I have been roaming the woods so much lately.

Such a great project.

Nightwish - Endlessness

That lead guitar riff is pretty damn doomy by Nightwish standards, though it's of course quite melodic and very...well, Finnish - I'd compare it more to Swallow the Sun than Candlemass, for example.

Stratovarius - Will the Sun Rise?

Damn this is good. That chorus is a blueprint for any good Europower there ever was. Dynamite shit man.

Probably the best deathgrind I've ever heard. Very underrated band.

Geliebte des Regens is a great album for rainy evenings.
Repetitive and dreamy.

Dark Funeral - My Funeral

Love this song, love when black metal goes mid-paced and sort of 'churns'; plus I really like Dark Funeral for some reason

Dynazty - Waterfall

Still trying to figure out this one. They're very good at what they're doing, but the kind of midpaced, ultra-serious orchestral PM style just comes off suffocating in a way I guess. Though the sound is absolutely massive and "From Sound to Silence" is up there with their best tunes.

Conception - The Mansion

This is a gorgeous fucking song. Really good blend of metal and sort of a pop styling. Just tremendous as a centerpiece, and they don't fall into a typical power ballad thing which is nice.

Overkill - Raise the Dead

Man, if only Feel the Fire had good production (and the producer had bothered to get good takes out of Rat Skates). Rotten to the Core and Hammerhead seem to get most of the attention of all the songs on the debut, but my real standout is this track.

Sepultura - Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation (Cool, but I'm the weirdo who likes the CHAOS AD era better than the early stuff).
Krokus - Fire & Gasoline: Live! (Good!)
Joey Ramone - Don't Worry About Me (Cool!)
Alias - S/T (OK).
Styx - Come Sail Away: the Styx Anthology (Yup, I love it!)

Goddamn I love this one. Floor's vocals during the last couple minutes are especially fantastic.
