Ensiferum - Iron

Such an uplifting upbeat tune. Makes me want to go get in a fight to the death.

You forget how fucking amazing this album is. Such precise performances and power. I had a sinus infection when I bought this last year so it's good to hear it again more clearly. Midnight communicates such a range of emotions into this performance it's insane. So damn soulful.

It's a masterpiece.

Great songwriting too.

It was one of the best releases of 1988! Heavy, etched riffing with a serrated progressive sensibility.

Pretty much every song has something great.

Slough Feg - New Organon

Still so fucking good, probably my most played album this year if only for its 37 minute runtime.

I love the drumming on "Red Sharks." Whole album is fantastic, even the Dokkenish "Lonely." :D

I'm going to check this out today. I am very intrigued by what I've heard so far.

I recommend it for sure. I've heard even more positive things about her newest album CALIGULA. Was going to listen to just that today but I wanted some context and to familiarise myself with the rest of her work.

I've been listening to Caligula non-stop since finally hearing it. What an EXPERIENCE.

Uriah Heep - Between Two Worlds

Love Bernie Shaw's epic-ass vocal performance on this. I seem to be in the minority in that I think the Bolder/Shaw/Box/Lanzon/Kerslake lineup is their best. Bolder's bass lines in particular are really creative and flavorful without weakening the overall drive of their sound.

Lengsel - The Pale People

After their [very good] black metal debut, Lengsel went full avant-garde weird for their second and final album The Kiss - The Hope. This song is my favorite from TKTH and (the first half anyways) has got a cool music video too.

Dragonforce - Chemical Interference

Some of these bonus tracks on Maximum Overload are actually good and should've been on that album or the follow-up. Gotta say I am liking MO a bit more than I used to anyway - they were solid writers on that one.

Only got to see Amorphis once, at Wacken 2013 and half their set was acoustic and I was a bit dissapointed. I hope I get another shot.

Virgin Steele - Invictus

On the second song (after the intro), and starting to like it. This is heavy metal.

Athena - _A New Religion?_

Fabio sounds great here, and this album strikes a nice balance between the melodicism of power metal and explicit nods to progressive rock and metal classics. It's my favorite album of the 1990s Italian prog metal movement. Best track: "Soul Sailor," which has a superb keyboard theme and a soaring bridge and chorus.

PreHistoric Animals - _Consider It a Work of Art_

Released late last year. Prog rock/metal from Sweden with the usual choppy rhythms and some decent guitar & synth hooks and smooth vocals. It's pretty good but doesn't set my world on fire.

Paara - Riitti

Slightly overlooked finnish BM. Solid, elaborate black metal with great sense of melody and triumphant feel. Recalls early Emperor/Satyricon and combines it with Moonsorrow type of epic soundscapes. Nice use of clean vocals too.

So great day to be outside. I'm listening records.

Quartz - Stand Up and Fight

Semi-old favourite, meaning I found them around 2004-2005.

Quite heavy. The second half of that record is some of the best Dio material ever, imo.

Aeternus - Under the Eternal Blackened Sky

I expected something quite generic since I've heard some negative comments about this band's death metal era - but shit, I'm fucking loving this so far. I thought the second album didn't succeed much compared to the debut so I'm glad the band went for a more intensified approach with this one.

Repulsion "Horrified"

I'm not a big fan of grindcore, but this album along with Terrorizer's "World Downfall" are the best within this genre. Brilliant stuff.
