Re-visiting their album from last year. I still think it is very inferiour to Voice of Steel, but it definitely benefits from repeated listens and some time to allow full comprehension. There are many layers to the music.

(2017) Nokturnal Mortum - Verity is GOOD.

Reinkaos - Dissection
To me, this sounds like a classic heavy metal album instead of melodic BM or melodeath. A really excellent one at that. Of course, fans were upset since its so different from their previous material.

I could listen to this recently and think it's BAD.

(2017) Blut Aus Nord - Deus Salutis Meae.

Giving this some more listening time.

Human Remains - Spoiling of Beauty

Ever since I discovered them a few years ago I love them more with each passing year and they're moving up ever closer to my favourites.

Vardoger - My Demon

Proggy, energetic, death metal from Norway. I can't seem to get tired of this album (Ghost Notes).

Iced Earth - Horror Show

There's so much better US metal than this, but this is a fun album kind of in spite of itself, in spite of the simplicity and repetition. You can at least hear they were gleefully bashing out these tunes. Some of em are pretty damn good, although some are fillers as well. Would be cooler if Barlow had less effects and echos on his voice and whatnot.

Glenn Tipton - Baptism of Fire

Kinda like what Judas Priest would sound if they tried to copy Pantera and Machine Head. That is, not good.

King Diamond - Abigail

Now, stuff like this is why I love metal: A true masterpice of heavy metal. This is the 13th album that I gave a perfect rating for on rate my music.

Euphoreon - Ends Of The Earth

There are a lot of bands that play this style of Wintersun-y metal and most are completely forgettable IMO, but there's something about Euphoreon that really grabs me. Great stuff.

A lot of people consider _Once_ to be their best album. I'm not among them, but it's certainly quite accessible and catchy.

I remember I used to hate Once back when I was trying to pretend metal purity mattered. It's not their best one but it's easily their last really amazing album. A lot of it really kills and it's one of those ultra-glossy and pro albums that rocks the fuck out.

Threshold - Siren Sky

Still my favorite album by them and this is a great tune.

Dream Troll - I Will Not Die Today

I always dig this kind of heavy yet polished/crisp guitar sound. The vocals are in a very sing-songy cadence like Falconer or something, but he's very good at what he does.

I checked those guys out when you mentioned them in this thread before, they’re fucking fantastic. Some of the best lead harmonies I’ve heard this side of Thin Lizzy.

Now playing:

Chastain - The Voice of the Cult

Getting more into trad and speed atm.

They're an intriguing act - they seem to put quite a bit of work into their sound and have a unique point of view. And good on checking out Chastain. Voice of the Cult may be my favorite one of their early albums (haven't tried the later shit).

Perpetual Doom - Sorrow's End

Well, it's certainly a hell of a lot better than what Phil LaBonte would end up making in later life.

Daniel Cavanagh - _Monochrome_

Definitely in my top 20 of 2017. Not metal by any stretch, but highly recommended to fans of Anathema's quieter moments. Actually more notable for its keyboard lines than guitar, I think.

I think they only got better over time. Early albums were cool but not as confident as what they'd do later... Dead Reckoning was a monster of an album and every one after that has only expanded the scope, songwriting, etc. Though for me For The Journey was the best one and their most recent one was slightly over-long albeit with pretty much all killer shit.

Sonata Arctica - The Raven Still Flies With You

Gotta say this is a stunning piece of work, easily favorite on this new album.

Type O Negative - Be My Druidess

The first four Type O albums are essential listening for everyone.

Still haven't checked the new album but this song is a monster and could belong easily to Mare Nostrum. The other prewiew track was nowhere near this good

I was so disappointed by this. The opening track, "The Exorcist" might be one of the best songs he has EVER written. I was truly blown away by that as the lead single. Then the record came out, and I found most of it to sound like adult contemporary music. Then the song "Soho" grew on me a bit, as did "The Silent Flight...", but The Exorcist is the only one I've ever gone back to.

Scorpions - We'll Burn The Sky

Quite invigorating, complex stuff. Stirring riff and Meine sounds great. They were a fucking powerhouse back then.
