Amorphis - Halo
The more time passes, the more I like this one. Sure, there's really nothing new to be found here, but they do what they do so well, it's a strength here. The bonus track, "My Name Is Night", is sublime.

Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops

Hadn't tried this before. I admit I thought it'd be a little weirder. But there's certainly something to these unfriendly sludge riffs and the trade-offs between screaming and the quite good clean singing. It's unsettling. Different mood for sure. I like the lyrics from what I've read so far.

Lacks the oomph of Blood Ritual but so far not bad. This sounds more black metalish I think mostly due to the thin production.

I'm assuming you're acquainted with both "Ceremony of Opposites" and "Passage". If not, remedy that ASAP!

Cemetary - Godless Beauty

Used to believe this sounded way too dated and cheesy, but it's actually pretty fun. Falls somewhere between Clouds-era Tiamat and Icon-era Paradise Lost.

I think I've heard some cuts off Ceremony but it's been decades. I remember a couple tracks from my Napster days.

:np: Cradle of Filth - Gilded Cunt

This album is unfairly maligned.

Carpathian Forest - Morbid Fascination with Death

I keep hearing about how this band has riffs. Thought I'll give them a try cause I'm in a riffy mood.
Edit: they have riffs!!!!!!

Nuclear Death - All Creatures Great & Eaten

True fuckin outsider music. Noisy, gargling chaos. But there's something intrinsically captivating in it. Just in the grinding intensity.

Just another example of why this band ruled supreme!

Darkthrone - To Walk The Infernal Fields

Best cut on this album. I get lost in that main riff. Its not brutal at all, just mesmerizing. Buzzing guitars over a simple drum beat.

Samael - After The Sepulture

Holy fuck was I missing out on some killer shit by not listening to this. This riffage is driving and powerful. Great drums that complement but don't overpower.

Corrosion of Conformity - Wiseblood

This is their last great album to date. I’ve always been enjoying those stop-start kind of riffs and their groovy bass tone is something else. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard one or two riffs very reminiscent of a certain band called Acid Bath on this album.

Faith No More - Sol Invictus

This was a nice surprise. Not too familiar with their material. Maybe because of that this album felt like something fresh to me.

Hypocrisy- Burn By The Cross

Penetralia is such an underrated album. It's better than any death metal album in 1992 not named Legion.

Acid Bath - What Color is Death?

Some of the best tunes on here are in the last half. It's long but it holds together well. Nice, massive freak show.

Autopsy - Mental Funeral

So great... a sludgy mass of riffs. Carnal and depraved.

Torture Squad - Pandemonium

Some surprisingly complex riffs for such a blistering vicious piece of thrash. Well done. I gotta try their more recent ones soon.

In Memorian - As the Prediccion

Cool Brazil black death metal, like Mystifier or Mortuary Drape.

Mary's Blood - Last Game (Live)

Infuriating that those old demos are basically lost media. I would love to hear the original.

Bolt Thrower- Infiltrator

One of my favorite BT songs and it's a bonus song off of BT's lower rated album lol.

So far today I’ve spun

Samael - Worship Him (this is clicking more and more with me, nice work. Evil!)

Marduk - Serpent Sermon (A lot of blasting but some slower moments, great record. Marduk don’t fuck around.)

Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon (Side B is a significant step up from side A IMO, but its a great raw black metal album in any event. It still like to hear this with a beefier production just to see what it would sound like.)

King Diamond - Abagail II (its not a bad record, but its just not nearly as memorable as most of his classics. I don’t think its even on par with House of God or Voodoo.)

October music!

Yeah I can't believe I never heard this before. It's pretty well fitting with a lot of other heavy 90s stuff.

Messa - Outermost

This band is so fucking incredible. I knew this would be good for October season. Huge waves of ominous feeling and catharsis. Even on the debut which is more basic than the following ones, they had a real mastery.

I'd say that Voodoo & HOG are much stronger than Abigail II. And "Puppet Master" is among his very best and trumps all three. It really feels like his 80s classics.

Yeah, Puppet Master was a great record. Full of memorable cuts. For my October listening I'm going to spin his entire discography and I think today is House of God.

But now playing...

Darkthrone - Across the Vacuum

One of the prime cuts off this strong mid era Darkthrone album. Great riffing and flow.

Very Cradle'ish. Good but not sure I'd listen to this over CoF.

Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses

Just picked these up at a CD shop here. The Acid Bath is both mellower and somehow more unsettling than the debut.

TON - Pete Steele, what a great pop songwriter. Tremendous. Just a real sense of identity to these very catchy songs.

Dark Fortress - Wraith

I would honestly be a-okay with a full Dark Fortress album that sounds like this song. It's one of my favorite metal songs ever.

Both great albums. Enjoy!

NP:

Pitchshifter - Infotainment?

This is a weird album in part because of the two tracks full of samples. There is no need for that. However, I have still respect for this record because they still had their trademark sound. This marked the end of an era and they sold out soon after.

New Xysma, baby! Don't be a fool and expect them to be metal anymore, they ROCK! Saw them live a few weeks ago, they are in terrific shape.

Faith No More - The Real Thing

This is the best one I've heard from them... yet. Now a song like Epic. Used to NOT love it, but now I can look past the hip hop influences and even enjoy them. And from half onwards it's all guitar heaven. Over all a strong album, and they do just what they fucking want. I respect that.

Amboog-A-Lard - Beyond Insanity

I'm not sure what to think of this yet, I've found this in some discussion about 2nd or 3rd-tier, early 90s thrash metal. Definitely interesting, it sounds kinda dated but in a good way and "Twiggy Ramirez" plays bass on it (who later joined Marilyn Manson, of all things). It has groove tendencies and is kinda Prong-y but also thrashes like Forbidden and/or Forced Entry ca. 1990/1991.

This forum recommends some interesting rare stuff, even after many years of listening to metal :-P
