Motorhead - Overkill

A fun song full of fantastic beats from Animal and outstanding guitar licks from Eddie.

Medieval Steel - The Dungeon Tapes

They were kind of goofy life but this really is almost a flawless piece of trad metal.

Gotta be one of my favorites by these guys.

Necros Christos - Domedon Doxomedon (2018)

Their last full length before splitting up, and it's a masterpiece. I'm frankly surprised it hasn't got one single review here in the four years since release.

Yeah to hear them doing that stuff this late in the game was something - I like the operatic, structured feel of it all with all the various parts.

Crass - Asylum

Wildly profane and crazy shit man.

Bathory - The Golden Walls of Heaven

Manic riffs, shredding chaos. Great.

A classic from their drug-addled days.

Still waiting for these guys to release their full length debut, this is promising stuff!

Ukraft - The Scarlet Burning

This Danish band's brand of melodic death metal was better than I expected. It has equal amount of heaviness and melodicism to keep fans of both sides interested.

Goatwhore - Reanimated Sacrifice

Black thrashing madness from this American band. I initially thought this band would have more sludgier influences as they hail from NOLA. But instead, they're on the thrashier end of the spectrum.

Ahab - The Boats of the Glen Carrig

Not quite as great as my favourite Ahab release ("The Giant") but the band's musicality is still astounding. How a potentially "boring" funeral doom band with a garbage can on vocals can sound as musically nuanced as a jazz combo is a mystery. They know the value of every note and every moment of silence.

Shub Niggurath - La Ballade De Lenore

This is some serious ominous stuff; like some kind of improvised soundtrack of an old horror movie.

Entombed - Crawl

Say what you will on how Clandestine is inferior to Left Hand Path, but it was my first exposure to Entombed which is why it has a soft spot for me. Crawl is a great track and I like how the music works like exactly as the song title as it slowly crawls out of the speakers.

Rainbow - "mistreated" from Live In Munich 1977
Absolutely stellar rendition of this great song, which shines a light on the wonderful partnership that was Dio/Blackmore. Amazing stuff.

Infester - To the Depths (In Degradation)

My first time listening to this track, and I think it has quite an off-kilter feel. The intricate drumming somehow works for this type of brutal death metal with tempo changes all over the place. The vocalist is really versatile, alternating between gutturals and shrieks. There's a few sections where it gets more atmospheric which offers a pleasurable contrast. Only criticism is that the guitar tone is a bit washed out beneath the bass and like with Suffocation's Breeding the Spawn, I have to turn the volume higher than usual.

Brocas Helm - Hell's Whip

Definitely one of the greatest bands to ever do this shit.

Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia

This is just a really smooth and pleasant album, you just have to enjoy the ride. None of that plastic bullshit of the late 90's and early 00's.

Iron Maiden - Hell On Earth

Still great. They have a strong streak of closing songs in their couple latest albums. When the Wild Wind Blows, Empire of the Clouds, you know it.

Nearly all of their albums are closed with a classic. "Killers" may be the lone exception with Drifter. I even really like "Como Estais Amigos" and consider "Only the Good Die Young" to be one of their absolute best songs.

Domine - The Chronicle of the Black Sword

I love the first album from Domine so much that I can't explain...
they then decided to go power metal, as the trend of the time requested, but the first album is super doomy and epic... and the voice of Morby is great.
It's a must listen for fans of early Manowar, Manilla Road... but I would argue that also if you like the viking albums of Bathory it's a good fit.

Jørn Lande & Trond Holter - Walking On Water

Jørn is fast becoming one of my favourite singers based solely on his guest appearances with Avantasia and Ayreon so it's about time I listened to some of his stuff. I remember this song being fucking killer so I'm finally listening to the full album and yeah it rules.

You're right. And Only the Good Die Young is one of their best! Should be mentioned among the classics of that era.

"Only the Good Die Young" is great and always makes me wish there was more after it - that's a good album right there.

Arch/Matheos - Pitch Black Prism

This is an incredible fucking song.

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.

As majestic and power as the first time.

Livewire - Solace in Escape

This album is super fun. Scratches that speed metal itch quite nicely.

Sabaton - Stormtroopers

Pray for me. I'm goin' in.

Beherit - Live at the Devils studio 1990

This and oath of black blood have a tendency to get extremely addicting once in a while, and Beherit are genuinely good songwriters, even in the crude, early era like this, one of the greats of BM imo

Oh yeah just saw the maiden discussion and please for the love of God I hate when people shit on can I play with madness, Seventh Son is full of 8 of the best songs ever, and that one is just as good as the others, that's probably their absolute best album if I were held at gunpoint and forced to choose

Destruction – Diabolical

Well, I like the opener because of its slayerisms but I lose interest pretty quickly. And Schmier's close to unlistenable to my ears. Some nice riffs in the album's second half but… polka, polka… nah.

Y'tube's recommendations say I should listen to…

Evil Invaders – Shattering Reflection

…instead. Not bad at all, a Belgian 80s revivalist thrash 'n' heavy metal hybrid with an expressive vocalist roughly in the vein of David Bower (Hell), Halford, King Diamond etc. Very traditional and very well produced.

Spoiler: show

+1 for Seventh Son being the best Maiden album. It's my personal favourite. Can I Play with Madness? is a cheesy song, but goes along perfectly with the rest of the album. Magical atmosphere.

Arcturus - The Chaos Path

Absolute insanity! I love it.
