Metal Church - Fake Healer

Revisiting my Mike Howe-era Metal Church albums. This is such an epic album opener.

Accept - Living for Tonite

Nothing beats old Accept.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Relentless Fury

From the new album. Just like the good old days (which I never lived, but still). Reminds me of the title track from Fire & Ice. Just as catchy.

Metal Church - No Friend of Mine

A couple different people seem to think the band was musically losing steam on these Howe albums, but I dunno, I think that's just the fact that they don't thrash as hard. This is great rock-ish, eclectic heavy metal.

This album also has some of the best lyrics you'll find, just whatever they write about, it's always impeccable and literary and delivered with such conviction by Howe. Masterful.

Heretic - Breaking Point

Heretic aren't too far removed from Metal Church soundwise. As for Mike Howe? You guessed it, he sounds fuckin great. Very cool album.

Anacrusis - Grateful

What a song. Powerful in every way. Screams and Whispers was one hell of a swansong.

Kamelot - Torn

Still loving "Silverthorn", honestly. Hell, this is probably one of my favorite Kamelot songs of all time.

Hollow - Transcending Sorrow

This is fucking killer. Great riffs and interesting writing.

These are just really smart, snappy tunes. The vocals are a bit one-note maybe but he sounds great anyway and I like his high voice combined with these heavy, dense guitars. Some of these choruses are absolute genius stuff like "Cogito" - a first rate fucking song by any means.

Blood Incantation - Awakening From the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality (Mirror of the Soul)

Proggy, technical, and inventive death metal. I don't really care if it's "overrated", I still dig the fuck out of this.

Enslaved - Bounded By Allegiance

For the two last weeks or so I've been revisiting Enslaved, specifically their work post Blodhemn. Back in the day I was very dismissive of their progressive oriented works, but am finding much more to enjoy this time around. Pretty rewarding really.

I need to go back to that one, just crazy overlooked power metal stuff from its golden era. And it was released on Nuclear Blast! Maybe they just needed to put out a couple more records out to make a splash, but instead they just split up right after.

Times of Grace - Songs of Loss and Separation

Hmm way different from the first one. Very low key, ponderous stuff, true to the album title for sure. This is a side project of Adam and Jesse from Killswitch Engage and while the first album was at least sort of in that metalcore vein, this is nothing of the sort, a more modern rock kind of thing. Adam does way more singing this time, which is a nice surprise. Definitely need more time and attention with this one!

Totally. It's a very mature sound already and fits in with a lot of the heavier PM from that time. They apparently have a 2018 album I ought to track down too, and I should see if I can get the debut anywhere. I was surprised it was on Nuclear Blast too, wasn't aware until the CD got here.

edit: Weirdly enough the 2018 one is the one not on Amazon. Oh well. I will have to look elsewhere.

Hollow - Shutdown

Second play... definitely growing on me. Shades of Crimson Glory and Psychotic Waltz.

Angel Dust - Still I'm Bleeding

The way this album flows - heavy as fuck to mellow and then to melodic and triumphant - is really intriguing and singular, most bands would not do this.

Tad Morose - Order of the Seven Poles

Figured I might as well go for a triptych of this style of music for the morning.

Impaled - Operating Theater

Really good Carcass worship, combines the gore soaked splatter of the early stuff with the melodic touches of the later releases.

Carcass - Corporal Jigsore Quandry

The lyrics of this fucking album are really something else.

Metal Church - Anthem to the Estranged

Mike Howe told a story like no one else did; this might as well demonstrate his best vocal performance.

Crematory - Rise and Fall

Love the song, but the harsh vocals are total garbage.

Dream Theater - The Count Of Tuscany

After 11 years... still as great and creative as ever. Rest of the album has aged a bit though!

Hypocrisy - Turn The Page

Despite poor ratings, Catch22 has some monster tunes...

Queensryche - The Needle Lies

"Operation: Mindcrime" is definitely a strong contender for a 100% rating for me, and I'm sure it's that way for a lot of other people too.

Probably as influential as Maiden or Priest for later melodic metal or PM bands. Just seminal music in general.

Watchtower - Life Cycles

Still regularly playing this; a wonderfully winding, jazzy catacomb of sound.

Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death

This is such a stunning piece of work.

Iron Maiden - Rainmaker

Perhaps Stratego or Days of Future Past from the new album would be on the level of this (appropriately short) song. You can always hope.

Steel Attack - Where Mankind Fails

As a Swedish person, this singer’s accent just kills me  Pretty great, riffy power metal though.

Blessing in Disguise remains my favourite of the band; just an excellent mixture between the expanded songwriting and furious riffing.

Been in the mood for entirely other types of music but this album has a lot of really first rate shit. Glorious.

Eternal Champion does a great job with the old-school sound and aesthetic
